I love these kinds of builds because for all of the money people pour into their raw specs, they buy the cheapest, crappiest monitor in existence because it doesn't improve their Futuremark score.

Edit: To clarify, that monitor is obsolete and probably the cheapest (and at this point worst) 120hz monitor out right now. Didn't even go Surround either.

Hi guys,

I'm planning on building a new rig and having a hard time choosing a PSU and case. Here are my specs:

Asrock Z68 Extreme4 Gen3
eVGA GTX 560Ti GDDR5 1GB 256bit 900/4212MHz DS SC Dual Fan
Intel Core i5 2500k
ram gskill G.skill Ripjaws-X 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz Cl9
Samsung 470 128gb SSD
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 1TB 7200 RPM
Liteon 24x DVDRW

Would appreciate if you could recommend a PSU and case for me. I'm looking for a case with good air cooling (I live in a tropical country so cooling is a must) but I don't want to spend too much (limit is $80) but don't want it to be cramped either. For the PSU, a reliable one which can power the entire rig is fine for me. I might overclock a bit but probably not more than 10-15%. Any general comment about the build (parts I can replace with something as effective but cheaper, etc.) would be welcome too. Thanks for any help.

NVM. I found the optimized gaming build thread. Found what I was looking for.

Last night my laptop was short circuited. It's out of warranty and i used it like a desktop anyway, so I've decided to get a new PC. Thanks in advance for helping me out

What is your budget?

I am willing to spend 500-800 dollars. The lowest price possible is the most important factor but i tried to be reasonable with the budget.

What is your resolution?

1920 x 1200

What are you using it for?

The only game that i will play on this computer is Starcraft 2. I will be using it for school and internet.

What is your upgrade cycle?

My upgrade cycle is about every 2 years.

When do you plan on building it?

As soon as possible.

Do you plan on overclocking?

No i don't think that is necessary.

Do you need an Operating System?

Yes i need an OS.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

I have no idea what SLI or Crossfire is so i guess not.

Where are you buying your parts from?

Probably Newegg but it doesn't matter i live in eastern US if that helps.

Thanks again to whoever helps me

I'm in the mood for learning, so would someone care to elaborate? Is this just that the screen is underkill, or is there something more?

@Hertzy

Depending on your screen, game you're playing, and some other minor factors, there's a maximum amount of computer (& graphics) power you can benefit from. Once a game is at maximum settings for your resolution and your computer is generating the maximum number of frames your monitor can physically display, there's simply no way to use extra power.

With the screen Deto bought, there's simply no way he can use the amount of power in graphics cards he purchased. There is simply exactly zero difference benefit to his his graphics card choices compared to a setup that is, say $800 cheaper. This is the reason some other posters were mentioning they sort of assumed/hoped Deto was actually gaming on 3 23" screens simultaneously - then he could come close to using to the graphics processing power he bought.

Similarly, his RAM & power supply choice. Having lots of extra RAM does precisely jack shit for running games - once you have enough, more doesn't benefit you. More power means you can power more things... if you have a much bigger power supply than the number of things you need powered... the processor he bought has essentially the same power as one $400-500 cheaper... you see the pattern.

In essence, it appears Deto fell for marketing. He could have bought product list A with the exact same performance, but he instead bought product list B for twice as much and false promises of e-peen.

Then again, who knows, maybe he's rendering complex 3d videos while playing Crysis off a ramdisk and sitting under a heatlamp also powered by his Thermaltake 1500w. In that case Deto wasted a lot less money than it appears.

It's a $4000 configuration paired with some shitty $300 monitor. If the configuration was paired with triple professional monitors of some kind than it would be okay... The fact that the individual is purchasing some shit monitor also probably means he has a shit chair, desk, and sound system as well. Getting a Sandybridge-E instead of a Sandybridge-EP means this configuration probably isn't going to be used as a primary machine for professional work. Getting a shit monitor instead of a professional monitor means this configuration probably won't be doing any editing work. Both of which means that the $1000 processor goes to waste. Not doing Surround means that the $1500 multi-GPU setup goes to waste.

It's basically a $3000 investment that will be thrown out the window by the end of next year.

That pretty much cleared it up. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this.

I'm growing increasingly happier that I asked for advice before buying my first box.

Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply
