None of them is anything special by todays standards. Of the three, 300 Illusion would be least prone to making me vomit. Antec 902 v3 is better, but not sure if you're counting that when saying 900 or not. Mind you, not a lot better, and not worth it at the price it runs, but putting it out there. I used to have an Antec 900, and fact is, it sucked. 902 and 300 are built along similar lines, 300 at least has the advantage of being cheaper, 902 is slightly less shitty than the original 900. Rosewill challenger is similar in lines of crappiness, and without the decent quality Antec fans.

On August 11 2011 17:15 LazyMacro wrote: + Show Spoiler + So I've spent a lot of my night reading about different components and learning a lot more about things. Not surprisingly, my list that I've been coming up with is almost identical and I think I've gotten a better idea for why you recommended which parts you've recommended. Some thoughts I've had: - Would getting a different/better motherboard help down the line in terms of being able to upgrade if I so choose? If I understand correctly, that motherboard is a great value, but won't be able to support adding more memory later on or a second GPU. Any recommendations on other motherboards to look at? - WRT motherboard chipsets: Is choosing between H61, H67, P67, X68, etc. a major decision? I've still not quite sure what the difference is. From what I've read it sounds like the X68 chipset is more for overclocking, which I'm not planning on doing. Edit: Regarding my second question: http://motherboardnews.com/2011/04/07/comparison-of-intels-lga-1155-chipsets/ It looks like the Z68 chipset would offer the most flexibility, but it's also unlikely I'd take advantage of all of it. My instinct says to look into P67 motherboards, but I'm not sure if that's a good idea or if I should just go with the H61 motherboard you recommended. What about the ASRock P67 Extreme4 (B3)? It still has an LGA1155 socket so the i5-2400 will work in it, it has 4x240 pin DDR3 slots, and it has 3 PCI Express x16 slots. This way I could upgrade memory and add a GPU down the line. What do you think? Motherboard should be chosen for the features you want (USB3,Sata3), quality of build/manufacturer (most are fine e.g. ASRock, ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte), ability to overclock (H61/67 can't vs P67/Z68 which can, for LGA1155 mobo's), and how many power phases it has (for more overclocking, if you decide to do so). Since you said you want to stream in HD, I would suggest an i5 2500k with a P67 mobo and a heatsink such as the CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ or Xigmatek Gaia. Z68 boards provide QuickSync (using the CPU's hardware to speed up video encoding), which is nice for streaming but I don't know what streaming software (if any) actually takes advantage of that. You probably won't need more than 8GB of RAM anytime in the near future (not even in 5 years, in my opinion). You'll have a hard time exceeding 4 GB in use. Planning for a dual-GPU upgrade path is a very bad idea as it has many downsides (more heat, more noise, rarely twice the performance of that single card, entirely dependent on drivers, more power consumption, etc.) while getting a good card now that fits all your needs and upgrading in 3 years, let's say, is a much better idea. You should know very well what you want your GPU to do. Example: I play at 1600x900. I wanted Crysis to run at max settings, including at least 2x AA (to me, the difference between No AA and 2x AA is quite noticeable, but higher than 2x I can't notice much). So I bought a HD 6870 (about equivalent to a GTX 560). If you want to crank up the AA as well, at 1920x1080, you're gonna need a 6950/560 Ti. Maybe even a 6970/570. But a new builder should not consider dual-GPU. You should REALLY know your stuff when considering that.

Fits right around my budget (~$650 before taxes and other costs) but just looks for thoughts about the parts. I might overclock in the future if I require it, and I would like to stick to the parts I have as much as possible, so I'm not sure how big of a PSU I need or if I need any aftermarket cooling. I plan to add an SSD in the future when prices drop to a more reasonable rate, hence the Z68 pick for SSD caching. The 6850 seems fairly good value to me, but I'm not too sure about the brand. Get this memory kit instead: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=57947 , pricematch with http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15380BD8041 for $27.39 Better pricematch at $208.06 for the 2500k: http://www.hltechnology.com/one_prod.php?pid=039880 Better pricematch at $109.69 for the Z68: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=11830BD5085 Case can be pricematched to $35.64: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=16950AC0077 Powercolor is okay, they're a low-tier brand I guess you would say. Unless you want the five year warranty provided by the Caviar Black, you are much better saving money by getting a Caviar Blue. Caviar Black can be pricematched to $54.97 if you want to remain with it: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7288041 Otherwise a Caviar Blue 500GB can be had for $40. An aftermarket heatsink is recommended for overclocking. You can add this now or add this later when you plan on overclocking. You won't be using SSD caching, trust me but Z68 boards aren't a bad pick in Canada considering their price.

The powercolor is a reference design afaik so quality should be similar throughout all the various brands of reference design cards. I've never dealt with Powercolor so I can't say whether their post-sale support is garbage or not. 6850s from other brands such as ASUS and Gigabyte will most likely come equipped with a better heatsink and will be factory clocked higher.

Some will probably tell you to get a Caviar Green instead of Black (greens are slower and use slightly less power, but cost less per GB of space) since you have a SSD . I have a SSD also (40GB) but bought a Caviar Black as well because there's no way all my huge games are going to fit on the SSD and I did not want to skimp on that just for a few bucks - I have a lot of Single Player games that have significant enough load times that a green drive would piss me off. And since you're getting a SSD, you should absolutely put your OS and other frequently used programs that load slowly (Antivirus, Office suite, single player games). If you don't put those things there, why get a SSD in the first place? The difference between GPU's of the same kind from different manufacturers is in design of the card (heatsink, fan(s), reference clocks or overclocked, etc), warranty, support...
