I am looking to purchase a new desktop computer and would love it if you could give me a bit of advice. Budget ~2k Resolution I have two 23" montiors at 1920x1080 Purpose To do 1080p SC2 streaming Upgrade Cycle 2~3 years, I added a larger power supply than needed in case I need/want to add a 2nd graphics card at some point. I also did the same with the motherboard as far as requirements. To be built Between now and next weekend Overclocking Probably, but I am currently thinking of purchasing though iBUYPOWER and might just have them overclock it for $50 since I have never done it before and don't want to risk fucking it up. Operating System yes, Win7 Like I said, I have been looking at purchasing though iBUYPOWER. Do you guys know of any other websites I might want to use instead and what you recommend as far as specs? Here is the build I am currently looking at. 1 x Case ( NZXT Phantom Full Tower Gaming Case - Black ) 1 x Processor ( Intel® Core™ i7 960 Processor (4x 3.20GHz/8MB L3 Cache) ) 1 x iBUYPOWER PowerDrive ( PowerDrive Level 2 - Up to 20% Overclocking ) 1 x Processor Cooling ( Liquid CPU Cooling System [SOCKET-1366] - ARC Dual Silent High Performance Fan Upgrade (Push-Pull Airflow) ) 1 x Memory ( 12 GB [2 GB X6] DDR3-1600 - Corsair or Major Brand ) 1 x Video Card ( NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 - 3GB - Single Card ) 1 x Video Card Brand ( Major Brand Powered by AMD or NVIDIA ) 1 x Motherboard ( [3-Way SLI] Gigabyte G1.Guerrilla w/ Killer Network Technology ) 1 x Motherboard USB / SATA Interface ( Motherboard default USB / SATA Interface ) 1 x Power Supply ( 1000 Watt -- Extreme Gaming Series ) 1 x Primary Hard Drive ( 60 GB ADATA S511 SSD SATA-III 6Gb/s - Single Drive ) ^^small but I only plan on having the OS and maybe SC2 on it... i could get a lower read/write spec one that is a bit more expensive but has more space? The read/write on it are pretty beast compared to the other options though. It is 550MB/s Read and 500MB/s Write 1 x Data Hard Drive ( 1 TB HARD DRIVE -- 32M Cache, 7200 RPM, 6.0Gb/s - Single Drive ) 1 x Optical Drive ( [10X Blu-Ray] LG BLU-RAY Reader, DVD±R/±RW Burner Combo Drive - Black ) 1 x Flash Media Reader / Writer ( 12-In-1 Internal Flash Media Card Reader/Writer - Black ) 1 x Meter Display ( NZXT Sentry 2 Touch Screen Fan Controller & Temperature Display ) 1 x Sound Card ( ASUS Xonar DG ) 1 x Network Card ( Killer Xeno Pro Gaming Network Card ) 1 x Operating System ( Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium + Office Starter 2010 (Includes basic versions of Word and Excel) - 64-Bit ) 1 x Speaker System ( iBUYPOWER 2.1 Channel Stereo Super Bass Subwoofer Speaker System ) ^^I already have crappy speakers but it was $4... so meh 1 x Advanced Build Options ( Professional wiring for all cables inside the system tower - Achieve exceptional airflow in your chassis ) 1 x Advanced Build Options ( Professional wiring for all cables inside the system tower - Basic Pro Wiring ) 1 x Warranty ( Standard Warranty Service - Standard 3-Year Limited Warranty + Lifetime Technical Support ) 1 x Rush Service ( Rush Service Fee (not shipping fee) - No Rush Service, Estimate Ship Out in 5~10 Business Days ) ^^Not really rush, cheapest shipping option (*Free* but I'm sure it's built into the price) I think the build is decent, but I am not super tech savy and assume there are some components I went overboard on and others that need to be upgraded more... thoughts? The current price is $1995.00 after using the ibuypower %5 discount code for orders over $999. Also, I should be able to get another $100-$150 off using my student email address, bringing it to around $1900.00. Additionally there are $100+ worth of Mail-in-Rebates they offered on components with this build. I didn't bother to factor them in, however, as I have no idea what form that $$ will be in. Any help would greatly appreciated! XD

I am no computer pro like some people here, but I just wanted to say dont buy this as for at least the CPU there is the 2600k that is better/same performance for cheaper, if you dont want to build it yourself, you can buy from ncix and they assmble it for you for 50$ since u buying windows as well. SkyR helped with a build and everything with monitor came down to around 1200 with tax/shipping. If you want a huge gpu like the 580, it will be more expensive but I think you would still save a good 400$.

Oh, and ibuypower and cyberpower are shady as all fuck, building is fairly easy if you're half literate and have a higher IQ than a squirrel, and should be seriously considered.

Yes i just figured out the CPU was outdated a few min ago.. unfortunately ibuypower doesn't have the option to upgrade to a 2600k yet :/ I will look into ncix. As far as the GPU goes... I don't exactly know what the requirements I need are. I just have a 2k budget and it looked sweet. I figured I could upgrade it easily later on since there is only 1 of them. If it is possible to purchase an equivalent or better GPU system that uses 2 Cards, I wouldn't be opposed to that.

FYI the high maximum sequential (note: random access is much more important for applications and OS) speeds on the SSD only apply in very rare situations, for data that can be compressed very highly. That SSD does real-time data compression, so for most data, the speeds will be much slower and more in line with other typical SSDs. Sound card and network card may be unnecessary depending on your needs. 1000W PSU is unnecessary even for some reason you wanted to run SLI GTX 580. Well, maybe not overkill since it's probably some shoddy unit that can't reliably run 1000W. Anyway... What country are you in and what options do you have for purchasing?

Ok, I can tell already everyone is going to hate my build. Lawl, this is my first time I am trying to build a Desktop :/ To make things easier I will go with this I guess and post a new build based on the feedback. New Post I have a 2K budget and don't know all that much about building a PC What do you guys recommend I purchase? My end goal is to be able to do 1080p SC2 streaming.

I looked up NCIX and they don't seem to have a PC you can select an 2600K for either. Is the CPU just too new and I need to wait a few weeks before it will show up on major sites?

I live in the US, Michigan to be specific. As far as win7 goes, I have already gotten 2 free copies of it from my university and am not sure if they will give me another.

Are you trying to spend all $2000 on the computer components themselves? That's the price range where you pay a lot more for not a lot of benefit, by the way.

Ok thanks I will check out NCISUS. And I don't have to spend all $2K on the comp, that is just how much I am roughly willing to spend. I don't exactly know what I need to get for 1080p streaming and figured a 2K comp would be good enough. If you can get me something for cheaper that would be brilliant.

You dont go with the builder, you have to select individual parts and then you can add 50$ for assembly. Fill this up: (as I did a few days ago) What is your budget? 800$ CAD MAX (can go upto 900 with SSD, hopefully around 750 without ssd) Looking at the Crucial M4 SSD Micron C400 64GB at 114$ What is your resolution? 1920 x 1080 What are you using it for? 50% gaming, 50% surfing/movies/office What is your upgrade cycle? As long as I can get When do you plan on building it? This weeks NCIX deals (unless there arnt any good deals) Do you plan on overclocking? if budget allows i5-2500k (but I think ill have to go with a 2400 or 2300) Do you need an Operating System? No Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No Where are you buying your parts from? ncix or any other good site. Other info: I want at least an H67 mobo for USB3 and SATA3 (will add SSD now or later) Then wait for the pros :D

There's definitely the occasional horror story of people having to cancel payment through their credit card company when stuff didn't ship, and they "upgraded" my friend from a 460 to a 465 in an effort to clear stock. It's a significantly worse card in every way, and somehow, despite "being out" of 460's when they decided to give him the "free upgrade", when he called them on it, they had a 460 to overnight to him.

What is your budget? I want to say $800 max - would like an SSD and would be willing to go over slightly. What is your resolution? I currently have an old 22" 1680x1050 Acer that I would use - although I want to eventually bump it up to a 24" 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 and probably dual monitors (separate from above budget)(question: I understand computer monitors are widely 16:10, is this still the continuing trend or is 16: 9 the way to go?) What are you using it for? SC2, I play on lowest graphics, but I would like to stream at a nice resolution. I also edit video and dabble in vfx (FCP, Avid, AE, C4D). It is still just a hobby and my current comp (bootcamp off 13" Macbook late 2009) can chug along, but it's painful. I want to migrate away from FCP, but I might be open to Hackintosh configurations just out of curiosity. What is your upgrade cycle? 1-2 years When do you plan on building it? Definitely not now, I'm planning on late this fall (maybe I could wait for the December deals) Do you plan on overclocking? Nope Do you need an Operating System? Nope Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Probably not - unless you guys think I should. I'm not well read in this category. Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg & local Fry's Thanks for reading and I appreciate any help. I typically enjoy researching myself. It took me 3 months to buy headphones so I can't imagine what this project will do to me. Just looking for a baseline. Thanks again.
