I've done more embarrasing. Tried to swap CPU's for a friend drunk once, ended up only swapping CPU heatsinks on my first try.

What is your budget? Around $600 What is your resolution? 1680x1050 What are you using it for? Gaming, streaming and watching videos. What is your upgrade cycle? 3-5 years. When do you plan on building it? Immediately. Do you plan on overclocking? No, I don't think he plans on overclocking. Do you need an Operating System? He got windows 7, so no. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? I don't think he wants to SLI nor Crossfire. Where are you buying your parts from? Frys, Newegg and Amazon.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102878 A HD 5830 is still enough to play SC2 on ultra at 1680x1050. Get a $40 2 x 2GB DDR3 RAM kit as suggested earlier.
