I'm currently trying to play SC2 on my home comp, which has a Phenom II x4 840, ATI 5750 1GB, and 4GB RAM. However, I get major FPS drops when playing 1v1 games. The drops are random as well, like even near the beginning of the game when barely anything is on screen. I'm playing at 1440x900 res and I tried putting all the settings to low, except textures and shaders to medium and it still lags (around < 20 fps). That said, I noticed in a hardware monitoring software that came with the mobo that cpu clocks drop. Is this normal? I'll monitor the cpu and it'll show the multiplier dropping down to 4 (from 16) which shows the speed dropping from 3200 MHz to 800 MHz. If you are alt tabbing to check, it is normal for the multiplier to drop back down. If you are in the game and have the monitor on a second screen than no it is not normal. You should disable all power-saving features in the BIOS and within Windows to see if this helps at all.

What I have or will have: CPU: i3-2100 $100 GPU: XFX Radeon HD 4850 1gb. I was considering going with a 5770, but really the 4850 will suffice. Plus I was able to get it for $40. PSU: Corsair CX430. This was for $20. Had pretty decent reviews for its price. I also think this will suffice. HDD: WD 750gb Caviar. $30. Here's what I need help with: MOBO: I don't know what to look for here. I am looking for something solid and between $50-100. Please recommend me some options. RAM: Waiting for a deal, but came across this for $30: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=249313&t=2935581. Thoughts on this? Case: I don't need something stylish. I care about functionality more. I came across this for $30: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=249313&t=2924863. Thoughts? Lastly. What are your thoughts on my build in general. I really don't play games other than SC2. I think the GPU will suffice, but am not sure how the CPU will do in large battles during 3v3 or 4v4 games.

Memory is a good deal if you want to deal with mail in rebates. Case is also a good deal for $30 after mail in rebate. As for the motherboard. If you're looking at possibly adding a SSD later or need USB3, you could get an Asrock H61M U3S3 for $80: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157236 If you don't care about having SATA3 or USB3 than a Asrock H61M-VS for $60 would be fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157241 The 4850 and 5770 are similar in performance. The build is good, you got some pretty good deals on all the components.

Question about the motherboards you suggested. I noticed they both say "Memory Standard: DDR3 1333/1066." The memory I linked to above is DDR3 1600.. so I was just wondering if they are compatible with each other.

I got my computer yesterday and spent most of the day setting it up and downloading things and installing games and what have you and nothing went wrong. Today I was playing SC2 for about an hour and then poof! Random reboot. Thought that was quite weird so I checked out what everything was running at and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. All the temps are fine, which I expected since I dont overclock. Heres what I have: Intel core i5 2400 cpu asrock h67m mobo msi twin frozr gtx 560 ti gpu antec neo eco 450C psu Western Digital 640gb dual proc 7200 rpm sata 3 HD Mushkin ddr3 ram 2x2GB I checked all the connections when the computer got here to make sure nothing had come loose while shipping. They all seemed good. So... what could it be? The best I can come up with is my psu isn't good enough? But I'm not the most knowledgeable about this stuff so I thought I'd check here. Help please!!!

You may possibly be getting a blue screen but you have it configured so that it just automatically reboots. Go into Control Panel > System & Security > System > Advanced System Settings > Startup and Recovery Settings > Untick Automatically Restart

I unticked automatically restart. If/when it happens again I'll let you know if I get a blue screen or not.

Going to be primarily a gaming rig with some streaming (once I get better!). Trying to keep the parts at around the $800-900 range with an absolute limit at $950 as I won't upgrade for at least 3 years. I've been checking out newegg stuff and comparing it to some guides online for what exactly I'll need but like I said this is my 1st time building a computer so I'm not 100% on everything. I don't even know how to tell if everything would fit in the different cases. I'd really appreciate a noob guide/walkthrough or a PM from one of you super nerds to help me get started on how to pick everything. So far I've settled on: i5 GTX 560 Ti I may "acquire" W7 but I also may go hackintosh with this project since I have a SL disc laying around if that makes a difference. Thanks guys I'm really looking forward to this summer project ![]() __________________
