You will definitely not need to spend that much, Alryk. I also heard ASRock is fine this time around so don't ignore them. They were also very solid with their BIOS/UEFI and stability with iffy things like Windows' hibernate and sleep stuff. Gigabyte in comparison had problems with their BIOS updates for Z68 and Z77 but had very good hardware.
You should look at features you want, for example SLI, and decide like that. I don't know about audio. I'm fine with everything nowadays. The last time I thought onboard audio sounded bad was on a 6 year old PC or something. What can actually happen is the graphics card working being heard as noise in the analog audio out, but that's mostly being unlucky. That problem would supposedly be fixed by that EM shield thingy that Sniper board you look at uses for the corner where the audio chip is, but $75 just for that chance seems so stupid.
For the overclocking, it seems the CPU does part of the voltage regulation, but you still should look for a board that has a heat-sink on the chips around the CPU socket. The board still has to regulate 12 V into 2 V or something and current for 100 W will have to flow through those chips.
EDIT: Just saw the Z87MX-D3H on some site and that board also already looks like it has nearly every feature possible, Intel networking for example. The Sniper mATX board seems like a waste.
EDIT2: I'd choose the ASRock Z87M Extreme4 from the boards you mentioned.

Lol TD's count-down was so anti-climatic. They're updating the website piece-meal (it's amateur hour bwahah).

Basically the biggest feature outside of overclocking that matters to me is the sound quality haha, I love listening to music, although I'm not the stereotypical dubstep/whatever kids these days listen to, so I liked the bit that Gigabyte had about it. I just wish I knew how much of an appreciable difference it was. I know I've definitely noticed white noise/interference/all the things I don't like on my integrated audio on my current/outgoing PC (I'm picky, haha).
For reference, in case anybody in the US is looking for a build around 1k, mine is here:
Case: Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E - 99.99 PSU: Seasonic G Series 550W - 79.99 SSD: Samsung 840 120GB - 99.99 (I got it for 79.99) HDD: WD Blue 1 TB - 58.99 CPU: i5-4670k - 249.99 GPU: Sapphire 7850 1GB - 154.99 Mobo: Asrock Z87 Extreme4 - 137.99 Ram: Kingston HyperX Black 8GB 1600 - 67.99 (I got for 49.99) ODD: Lite ON DVD burner - 17.99, 3$ off with promo code EMCXRVM32 until Monday HSF: Noctua NH-U12S 69.99
Total: 1034.90 before sales/shipping/MIR.

Hahaha
@Ropid below well that's good to hear, that might convince me to save the money. But the Gigabyte colors will look so nice in my case with no window! (/s)

The Z87M Extreme4 also has something about improved audio compared to normal and some kind of EM shielding for that part of the board.
|
Another choice seems to be the Asus Z87 Gryphon which is 170$ at Newegg. That's more doable for me @ only 30$ more than the Asrock. Is there anything notable about them?
|
About your price list: if the NH-U14S CPU cooler still fits with mATX it is much better for $5 more. The CPU socket is closer to the graphics card than with ATX so you have to do research about that. I see newegg lists the U14S as not available. I'm not sure if that Zalman with 140 mm size isn't better than the NH-U12S. You could go for a HR-02 Macho on amazon.com. The Macho barely fits in Z77 mATX, so it's perhaps the same with Z87.
EDIT: I found photos about the HR-02 Macho and mATX and it looks fun:

I have a p8p67 (not the LE or other variants) motherboard, which is supposedly decent for the time it was released, and the onboard sound was so bad I got a cheap xonar dg at the first opportunity. Just food for thought.

The Temjin supports up to 160(165?) height in CPU coolers, and space in it is pretty tight to begin with, so that's why I picked the NH-U12S. I wouldn't have nearly as much clearance using the other two, and maybe I'm crazy but yeah
I also don't want this happening:
![[image loading]](http://images.anandtech.com/doci/6916/Small%20(13%20of%2013).jpg) http://www.anandtech.com/show/6916/cooler-master-seidon-240m-and-12-more-coolers-the-retest-and-megaroundup
From Anandtech's review, which is on an mATX Z68 motherboard. It's only one of the PCI express slots, but I'd like to have all 3 of them open just in case I think. In the event that I did add something like a sound card, I think I'd be needing the first and 3rd PCIe slots, since 2 and 3 are probably too close together for the GPU.
Same reason why I picked that PSU, it's 10mm shorter than the Rosewill Capstone,
@Rollin you're making the decision so much harder! XD thanks for the feedback though.
Edit: Asrock Z87M Extreme4 Product Page
It also has improved audio/shielding. Even if it's worse than the Sniper, that's enough to convince me. I'll get that.
|
You don't have a choice about which PCIe slots you want available or not because of the cooler. You absolutely need the first slot on mATX boards. It's the only one that has full x16 speed. You need that one for your graphics card, so the cooler absolutely has to be small enough to not hang over that slot.
|
I don't think running at x8 has much of a performance drop.
|
It would slowly drive me crazy over time knowing it's not in the x16 slot.
|
I'm going to use Alryk's build, cause i just need a comp to stream and play with.. I dont think i even need to overclock, do i need a HS still if im not overclocking?
|
No, you'll be fine without one. The stock Intel cooler can do stock settings np, but if you're going for that build you really shouldnoberclock, even if its just barely. Replace the noctua with a hyper 212 evo and you could probably even do the auto over clocking utility to get to like at least 4.2 Ghz.
Also, I picked the Temjin because I wanted a smaller build. You could look at other cases if you'd like that are bigger (would probably be easier to build in, at least slightly), but the Temjin would have everything you need as well.
|
No i want a small build also, since im building then shipping to a diff location

If you aren't going to overclock, a k-series is a waste of your money.

Yeah, I tell you that seeing that the majority of Gigabyte's Z87 boards used Intel NICs blew my mind. There's like...nothing else you can put on a board once you've done that.

Im gonna build my own computer, for the first time, completely from scratch.
My old computer is starting to break down on me, but I know that I can still salvage the PSU (Corsair 500W) and the 1TB HDD, since they were the ones I had put in recently.
Besides the PSU and the HDD, what else do I need to make a completely new functioning computer. Off the top of my head I would need a mobo, processor, gfx, ram, and a case with fans. With that said I was thinking of getting a i5-2500 for the processor and a gtx 560ti for the graphics card. Whats a good mobo to compliment those two. And a case and ram too.
Basically, all I know is that I want to build a computer around a i5 2500 and a 560ti. What else would you guys recommend to go with the rest of the computer.

Why do you want to build around a core i5 2500 and a GTX 560 Ti? While these are still very good by today's standards, they're old so unless you are purchasing used components or getting them for free, it'd be rather stupid to purchase them at their typical brand new pricing for a new build.

Im not very computer literate. I thought those were okay for todays standards. I have a budget of around 750. Given that I already have a PSU and HDD. What build would you recommend me getting that would be better than a i5 and 560ti.

€222 in EU, not bad at all. Tray CPU for €215! Good pricing IMO.

4770k not bad, comparatively, either.
