Hi. What PSU should I use for a i5 3570k with minor overclock, GTX 660 Single(Possibly adding a second card later) Im currently looking at: http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=773377 (Corsair CX 750M, 750W PSU ATX 12V V2.3, 80 Plus Bronze, Modular. 4x 6+2pin PCIe, 8x SATA, 6x Molex)
or
http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=657686 (XFX ProSeries Core Edition 650W PSU ATX 12V V2.31, 80 Plus Bronze, Standard, 2x 6pin PCIe, 2x 6+2pin PCIe, 8x SATA)
Are these worth their price? I will only use pc for gaming and streaming if that matters.
If you need more info about the pc i will edit in when i see it
|
Both are decent (CX750/CX750M is a pretty decent step above the other CX), but the XFX is better and should be more reliable long term.
Personally I'd recommend forgetting about SLI and getting something cheaper; really, you don't even need 650W for SLI, but given PCIe cable configurations and prices, you might as well. Actually, the two I'd look at are from Silver Power. http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=771926 http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=771922
It's 725 for a Seasonic SS-750AT rebrand (the XFX 650 is also a SS-___AT rebrand) and 390 for a Seasonic S12II rebrand (though I think with worse caps here).
edit: that's a lot of hardwired cables on the 750 W SilverPower. 14x SATA, 7x molex? heh.
|
Thanks for the quick response, Basicly the XFX is simply better for the price?
I have 0 experience with computer parts so I dont know whats good or even what the meaning of 80+ bronze standard etc.
What is the big diffrence between all of these? what does 14x SATA 7x molex mean? anything good/worth having?
Edit: Damn your response was crazy fast! do you live in this forum:D Edit2: After spending some time to acutally read the threadstarters post again, I know a bit more about bronze standard now x)

Another question. Looking to use these http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=585022 Kingston DDR3 HyperX 1600MHz 8GB
and a i5 3570k. Definetly going to overclock some and im curious over which motherboard I should use?
My ultimate goal with this build is to get 8gb ram, i5 3570k, gtx 660, fractal core design 3000 usb 3.0, -insert PSU- and -insert motherboard-.
Also using this http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=646112 Seagate Barracuda® 500GB SATA 6Gb/s (SATA 3.0), 16MB Cache, 7200RPM, 3.5"
No reason for 1TB atm.
Hopefully not landing above 8000kr(Excluding OS).
SSD will be added later when i have more money Same with cooler for OC, wont do it until i can afford it(another month)
Buying it all in 2 weeks from komplett.se

My brother is using the family computer to play games such as dota. It is a little laggy and he would like to have a more smooth time playing but i was wondering what upgrade would make this possible? These are the parts:
Mobo: ASRock H61M-HVS Socket 1155 Intel H61 Chipset (http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?item_id=048584)
CPU: Pentium G620
4 GB of RAM
There is only on board GPU so i was wondering what would be the best upgrade for $100-150? Any store that ships to canada is good for me.

Depends how much you want to overclock. There's two overclock builds i would basically do, firstly some cheap board like the z77 extreme4 (please don't take this as a reccomendation, i'm sure there's a better one at that price point) and a hyper212+ - targetting something like 4.3, 4.4ghz, or alternatively something like a gigabyte z77x-ud3/ud3h paired with a more powerful cooler (in euorope this would be hr-02 macho probably) so that you can push ~0.1v more comfortably and i'd expect 200-300mhz out of it above what you can do with a 212; Depends if you want value or power. I'd take the second build 100%, no questions asked if you have good budget, cheap stuff has value though if you just want to make a sweet sc2 system, like a hd7750, 3570k etc at lower budget.
What games are you going to be playing (at what screen resolution?) You'll probably use the GPU, but it's very possible to overbuy and spend more on a more expensive GPU, just to have it be idle half the time in the game you wanted to play because of other performance limitations
And both of the coolers are from other places, 212+ in the US and hr-02 macho in UK and parts of euorope are both great price/performance when you can get them for $20-25 and £36-39. I can't see what is available on your site, can't read swedish :D
There's also the fact that you're buying in 2 weeks. New CPU's/motherboards are releasing in 9 days, which kinda completely invalidates everything that i just wrote. I don't know haswell motherboards >yet< (i plan on buying one very shortly after release) but what you buy, what cooler you buy etc would be very much decided by stuff that we don't know yet due to non disclosure agreement on the cpu's

Maybe a 7750. If you don't have a GPU already and you didn't build it yourself it's more than likely the PSU is awful (both quality-wise and max wattage wise) so you'd have to replace it. What's screen resolution? 1920x1080 needs ~2.5x as much GPU strength for the same framerates on the same settings and uses more VRAM, memory bandwidth etc.

theres a upgrade package on komplett that involves i5 3570k, the ram i mentioned and http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.aspx?sku=760429 this motherboard. its 3900kr. I am playing on 1920x1080 and I wont be overclocking right away like i said but i guess with this motherboard i could atleast have a steady one for when i do oc?(If you think this motherboard is overkill then i will just go with the one said(z77x-ud3/ud3h))
I play SC2, CS:GO, World of Warcraft and i would like to stream it while maxing the graphics. Im kinda not into AMD right now. Bad experience with those and sort of want to go with my gtx 660 just because i know it performs great(seen it at friends etc) also I hope to dual monitor in a few months(120 or 144hz)
About haswell I honestly dont know what to do about that. i have no clue how they work or whats required for them.. I dont think i will be getting them simply because I feel like my current choice will be enough for a few years (1-2 will suffice)
Also about how much i want to OC. If i can oc 4.5+ stable without fucking up my shit(sorry for language) then i will get the later build you mentioned.
Im also adding about 2000kr/month worth of parts until i am satisfied(Getting SSD and extra harddrives and probably the macho one you mentioned

I built it a while back just for a family casual computer, i would imagine the PSU is fine? it is a Corsair CX430. The monitor is not very good, screen resolution is 1680x1050. What would boost the computer the most for playing games? Thank you.

@KapsyL:
The Z77X-D3H or -UD3H are already somewhat overkill, but they are not flashy. They can do SLI which you mentioned thinking about, and have somewhat better audio. I've seen a review of those boards where the CPU ran at 6 to 7 GHz with liquid nitrogen cooling. That's where the overkill part comes in. It should mean the parts supplying power to your CPU will be fine forever with anything normal below 5 GHz.
You should compare prices to that upgrade package you mention. If that package isn't pricier, perhaps go for that, but I wouldn't pay extra. Even though personally I'm not quite happy with Gigabyte, their hardware seems to be very good and overclock the best. The software part (the BIOS) is somewhat suspicious. I have no idea about MSI.
|
Comparing prices im saving about 400-500kr by going with D3H and 3570k / the kingston RAM.. which is a great thing, i assume they are all compatible aswell?
How much diffrence is it from UD3H or D3H? What should I get for something like my build?
Theres a 200kr diffrence from UD3H to D3H
Also. You mentioned the Gigabyte software is weird. whats the problem? I honestly have no clue what im supposed to do in there (I get help with most of these things for now, trying to learn a bit D: )
|
The parts used and design of the hardware is overall the same. The differences are superficial. The UD3H for example has things like a power button for using it without a case. There's something about the UD3H using more copper (whatever that means, sounds suspiciously useless).

I honestly have no clue what im supposed to do in there (I get help with most of these things for now, trying to learn a bit D: ) I had a cheap ASRock board. That one booted super fast and ran perfect. No error to be seen anywhere.
The Gigabyte is more on the slow side with booting. I have some error logged in the Windows event viewer when I put the PC to sleep. It does not crash or anything, the PC still goes to sleep and wakes up correctly despite that error being logged, but I can't make that log entry disappear.
I played around a lot with several beta UEFI for the Gigabyte and things like "fast boot" and "secure boot" and Windows 8. This broke things and required forcing the second BIOS chip to take over (Gigabyte puts a second backup BIOS chip onto their boards).
The board runs fine objectively speaking. It's probably my fault, but the ASRock didn't have any options I was not allowed to touch like on the Gigabyte.
I'm still definitely happier with the Gigabyte, but I feel the programmers of ASRock might be more capable.

You needn't spend $100 to get a big improvement; more is probably wasted for say DOTA anyway. If some of the games are more demanding, HD 7770, GTX 650 Ti, and GTX 650 Ti Boost could be appropriate. Otherwise, you can grab say a cheap HD 6670 for around $60 and be doing worlds better: http://www.ncix.ca/products/?sku=63154

Let's be careful and make something clear (you did earlier, but just in case):
There's a Z77-D3H, Z77X-D3H, and Z77X-UD3H. Seems like you're describing the Z77X-D3H; the X indicates SLI support, more or less. I think the Z77X-D3H and Z77-D3H have different VRM design and probably overclocking features, and so on; there are probably more difference between Z77-D3H and Z77X-D3H than there is between Z77X-D3H and Z77X-UD3H. If the difference is 200 sek, it's probably the Z77-D3H. That said, Z77-D3H is probably fine too.
(nevermind, checked Komplett and Z77X-D3H really is 200 SEK under Z77X-UD3H. There are some differences in ports and features though, other than the below.)
The UD3H has thicker copper layers. Thicker means higher cross-sectional area and thus lower resistance. With higher currents, you could get lower resistive losses, less heating up of the board itself, etc. More copper costs more money. It's a build quality thing, not really anything that much tangibly better for the consumer. But as you said... mostly useless.

Looking to get an upgrade to my CPU for streaming, are there any suggestions? Right now my specs are
i5-2400 GTX 560ti 8 GB RAM 90GB SSD / 500GB HDD Not sure what my motherboard is, I'll check when I get back tomorrow - will an i7 or better i5 be compatible with the same motherboard that the i5-2400 is? Also I want a new power supply because I think the current one is really loud. Are there any suggestions / how much watts it should be?
|
United Kingdom20275 Posts
Might be able to overclock sandy/ivy bridge with your current motherboard, unlikely though if you made a smart build or it was a prebuilt
You should look at something like the corsair cx430
What are you hoping to gain from upgrade?
|
Hmm well just wanting to stream at higher settings maybe, but mostly just to play smoother game. At MLG the computers were so smooth it felt so nice to play on them and I think I'd enjoy the game more. Also I was thinking about using the i5-2400 and a leftover radeon hd4850 I have to build a computer for my parents (they don't need that good of a computer but I have the parts sitting around anyways so I figured might as well)
How does the wattage work? Is 430 W enough to power it / does a lower wattage reduce the noise? My current power supply I think is like 720 W, which I think I remember reading in here previously is wasteful
|
Yes, a CX430 or similar unit would be more than capable of powering a Core i5 and GTX 560 Ti (or a 4850 which uses less than the GTX 560 Ti). Most average gaming configurations don't exceed 300w under load (eg. core i5 with $300 GPU).
A lower wattage unit would not reduce noise but a lower load on the power supply would. Though there are lower wattage fanless units like the Seasonic Platinum 400 which would be dead silent. Keep in mind this doesn't mean your 720w unit running at 30% load would be quieter than a ~400w unit running at 50% load since the two units would have different fans and fan controls.
|
430w is going to be more than enough for any intel processor + gpu combination. The Corsair cx430 is not always the quietest option though. If you order soon (while the special is still going on), I'd prefer something like the Rosewill Green 430w for $40 (I have this model, so I can tell you it's pretty quiet): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182202&Tpk=rosewill green 430w&IsVirtualParent=1
Or perhaps an Antec Earthwats 380w if the special above expires (yes, also enough power): http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59331&vpn=EA380D GREEN&manufacture=Antec&promoid=1281
By "smooth," presumably you're speaking about in-game FPS on those MLG computers. In all likelihood, when playing SC2 smoothness will result from lots of CPU power. Which means an overclocked Intel processor. Your i5-2400 is pretty good. But it's not overclocked. And overclocking adds the kind of maximum performance potential that will improve your performance when streaming SC2.
Unfortunately, your motherboard will probably not be compatible with overclocking (since it was sold with a CPU that can't overclock).
If you want a significant upgrade, you'll be looking at buying a new i5-3570k + z77 motherboard + aftermarket cooler (for the overclocking). Or, in a few weeks, an i5-4670k (?) + z87 motherboard when the new generation of Intel processors comes out. Altogether, that could cost in the neighborhood of $375, give or take. Plus the time you spend overclocking.
Without overclocking it's unlikely you'll be able to get much of an upgrade, btw.

Yea without OC you can get like 15% gains. With it, like 60 or something.
