If your new card covers up your SATA ports, you can buy 90 degree cables to alleviate this.
On another note, I will advise you to not upgrade the dell. The parts used to build that machine were designed to operate at nearly bare-minimum. The power supply provided may not have a "strong" enough 12V rail to support a long term use on more power hungry components (in this case the video card). In my experience, a quality power supply is one of the most prudent investments one could make when interested in having a higher performance or gaming PC. I would advise doing this and with that, you might as well build a PC from scratch because the price of a decent video card and power supply would probably be more than what the entire box is worth. If you cannot quite afford a PC from scratch, you can always scalp your dell to cut costs a little. You can get away with keeping the hard drive and disc drive and plan to upgrade those later. There are a few unexpected or overlooked costs when building a new PC. If you plan on running a legitimate copy of windows, prepare another 100 dollars at least on top of your build. On the contrary, if you're resourceful, 500 dollars would suffice for a pretty decent gaming rig not including a monitor. Despite the cost and a little hassle at times, the rewards of building a PC are entirely up to the user. If upgrading and access to many different types of components interests you, starting from scratch would be infinitely more rewarding than putting a new video card in a box of scrap metal! :D

This is my first time building a PC and would love help by requesting a build. What is my budget? $1000.00 USD
What is my resolution? 1680 x 1050
What will I be using it for? Mostly gaming (Starcraft II, CS:GO, Chivalry) but I frequently use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I would like to be able to stream in the future but this isn't my main priority.
What is my upgrade cycle? 2+ years as I do not have a steady income to upgrade.
When do I plan on building it?
Within the next two months
Do I plan on overclocking?
No, I do not plan on overclocking as I do not have any experience nor do I know any of the benefits of doing so.
Do I need an Operating System?
Yes, I need an Operating System.
Do I plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
I do not have the slightest clue. I would like to allow for the highest preformance in my machine but with the budget I currently have I am unsure if this is possible or necessary.
Where will I be purchasing my parts from?
Newegg or any site recommendation that allows for the best price for my parts.
Power supply already purchased As for parts already purchased, I have a Corsair tx750w power supply waiting to be used.
Case For a case, I want to purchase the Special Edition White Graphite Series™ 600T Mid-Tower Case.
Aside from the power supply I currently have and a case in mind, I would love the help and advice for the rest of the parts. Thank you!

2 years is actually a pretty short upgrade cycle if you were wondering :p
You probably want to come back in a month and ask again since Haswell will be out in like 2 weeks.
|
@Osh. Ask a few days before you're ready to buy. Specials change each week. And, as Craton mentioned, new hardware is due to be released soon. I think June 3rd is the planned date?

If I want to replace a cpu in my desktop, with a cpu that I know is compatible with all the components within the computer, is there anything software wise that I would have to do? (reinstall antivirus, OS, etc.)

Out of curiosity, how much extra does it cost to make your computer really quiet while running? Been using a hurricane simulator for the past 5 years and it has really gotten old, so the next computer I build I will probably try to have a very quiet computer, just not sure how much of a premium quiet is. I don't play on overclocking, so I don't need super high power cooling.

Depends how much performance you want, it's a bit difficult to keep high end GPU's quiet.
If you're using a stock i5 3570 and a hd7750 or something, it's really quite easy
|
Alright, thank you. I'll check back when i'm ready to buy.
|
Also how quiet you want. Quiet at idle is fairly easy. Quiet under load is harder.
Some of the graphics cards models these days have fairly quiet coolers, even on say GTX 670 or so, good enough for a lot of people if in a noise-dampening case. Say maybe less than $150 premium total for just picking quiet versions of everything? With more extreme measures, it could be a lot more.
|
One of the best decisions you'll make when trying to achieve a really quiet PC is a quality case. A quiet PC is a cool PC. The foundation of a cool PC is a case with good air flow.

This Nvidia Shadowplay stuff is a game changer! Once they allow you to stream from it, bye bye capture cards! Hell... its about time!

Once they allow you to stream from it
Yea, i don't think they can do that (different functions). Even if it could perform those functions of a capture card, you'd have to encode with CPU anyway (for same reason as avermedia live gamer hd, onboard encoder was not very efficient so you needed twice as much bitrate to make the stream look as good)
It looks amazing though as a feature it's worth the world to me and i would definitely use it for 5-100 hours a week for basically the entire life of the card.

Hey guys, I'm looking at using a Samsung 840 250GB SSD for my computer build. I don't want to go with ~120GB because I wanna leave some flexibility for what I'm able to put on there. The cheapest ones I'm seeing so far are the ones amazon sells for ~$170.
I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get one reliably for either a cheaper price, or a similar SSD ~200GB+ and similar performance & reliability for cheaper. Thanks
edit: Also, if anyone is able to find a 256GB Samsung 830 for around the same price, that would be great as well! thanks again!

Without unusual sale prices like for Black Friday or similar, you're not going to get better than about $160 / 250 GB for a less-desirable drive. $170 / 250 GB is typical and a pretty good deal for something like Samsung 840. It's not reasonable to expect much better.
People were buying SSDs when they were over $2 / GB and just got TRIM support, never mind before even that point.
Anyway, a quick search turns up B&H (very large, respected store that also deals online) selling it for $167.23 shipped: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?is=REG&Q=&A=details&O=productlist&sku=897035

^^B&H is great! Also very responsive, US-based CS. Definitely a recommended retailer. They are located in New York after all so SUPER convenient East Coast location means I get stuff in <2 business days using their free shipping. + Show Spoiler +They probably have the best packaging I've seen for traditional HDDs. I just bought a 3TB Red from them. It was double-boxed, with airpacks surrounding the inner box. Inside the inner box, the hard drive was isolated by fitted shipping inserts.
@Jugan - definitely buy more than you need; I believe 250GB is the optimal size these days. You need free space for the SSD to run optimally anyway, and prices for consumer SSDs in general have plummeted in recent times (thanks to use of TLC NAND).

Yeah, thanks for the advice you guys. After shopping around I've noticed that $170 is definitely on the cheaper end, especially for a brand that everyone knows. I've seen some lesser known brands sell for around that price or a little more, but It's probably better to be safe than sorry. I'm just a little disappointed that I've read about the 830 being better than the 840, but the 830 is a lot more expensive and unfortunately out of my budget right now.
I was also wondering if you guys could help me distinguish between the two builds of the hr-02 macho sold on amazon. One is the rev.A and the other is the rev.A (BW). It seems like they're both similar products and that the BW is just a painted a different set of colors (hence BW = black/white?). However, there is a $1 price difference and while the technical details are the same for both hr-02 machos, when I look at the product details right under the technical details and compare, they differ. My guess is it's basically reflective of different packaging, but I'm not sure. Wondering if anyone can help me out by taking a look:
hr-02 macho rev.A
hr-02 macho rev.A (BW)
Thanks guys!

It's the same cooler. The first one uses a TY-140 fan that is brown. The TY-147 fan is the exact same fan in black and white.
There's also TY-141 and TY-145 fans that are better and similarly brown or black and white, but these are not used here.

Sweet, thanks Ropid. I read the hr-02 macho is a really good HSF, and the fan itself is relatively silent. Would you have any suggestions to alternatives for roughly the same cost & performance area?
