Are you overclocking or not? The CPU and cooler are for an overclocking build and hence a waste of money if you're not.
Umm i guess not since, i know little about oc'ing

Hey guys, thanks for all the input you've given me. For a refresher, I want to be able to play SC2 and Dota2, and be able to stream without any performance issues or heating issues. Low noise levels would be nice too. Furthermore, I want to be sure that I'm able to overclock safely.
Here's the build. Any input would be nice, and I would really appreciate it if you guys helped me double check by taking a look at the provided links so I can be sure I'm getting the correct product (since I'm a noob at this).
($140) Mobo: GA-Z77X-UD3H
($220) CPU: i5-3570K (I know the CPU is pretty important to my build, wanna make sure this is the correct i5-3750K)
($54) HSF: HR-02 Macho
($60) PSU: Rosewill Capstone 450
($105) GPU: amd Radeon hd7770 I also wanna make sure this is the correct hd7770 I should be buying.
SSD: Looking at a Samsung 840 series 250GB for around $150-$170, still looking though.
($70) RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8gb 1600MHz Would like a second opinion on the RAM if possible.
Thanks for the help everyone! Also if anyone knows of a reliable but cheaper place to get parts, I'd be open to it. Thanks!

Yeah everything looks fine. Keep in mind haswell comes out in literally a week and a half almost exactly. Your build could remain the same other than the CPU and motherboard, which would have to change.
You're also missing a case & cd drive. Did you say those in an earlier post?

Would getting a GeForce GTX 650 Ti be better than a HD7700 for streaming or does it really matter?
|
GTX 650 ti (the ti is important) has a little better performance, I think, but that's about the game itself, the streaming should be the CPU's business. I have no idea what's up with overclocking or drivers or any other reasons there might be to choose NVidia vs. AMD.

sc2 doesn't really care for GPU performance you can probably get a 7750 and save some money, only place stronger GPU would show you a performance difference would be on max settings in the early and maybe towards midgame but you don't need anything anywhere near even a midrange GPU to keep up with performance when it starts choking with a ton of units (because of cpu etc.. gpu is left with almost no work to do)
The GPU is mainly a choice for other games

Hello all. My older brother is looking for a computer to play Mechwarrior Online (primarily) and watch movies on. He lives in Florida (25 C / 76 F) in his house.
He wants to buy the Alienware X51. But I told him we could maybe save him some money if he bought and built himself.
I just threw this together for him really quickly. His budget is under 1200 (US) which is what the Alienware he would be buying would cost.
Processor --- Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz $234.99
Heatsink --- Cooler Master RR-G524-18PK-R2 $40.49
RAM ---Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 $47.49
BluRay Drive --- LG Black 12X Blu-ray Combo Drive SATA Model UH12NS29 - OEM $49.59
Graphics Card --- GIGABYTE GV-N660OC-2GD GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-bit (10" length) $229.99
Hard Drive --- Western Digital WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s $67.90
PSU --- APEVIA ATX-CW500WP4 500W ATX Power Supply $39.99
Case --- Xigmatek ASGARD PRO $44.99
Total Cost --- $710.44
EDIT just realized prices are from Newegg.ca as opposed to Newegg.com Not sure of price differences though...
The things I am not good at though, is understanding what motherboards are good for what he wants. I look at motherboards and it is all jibbersih.. :/ It also doesn't help the first page resource thread hasn't been updated in forever.
He also just wants a plain black case, as it is going to blend in to his TV stand off to the side. He also doesn't want a case too big. Max dimensions of 17.5"h x 8"w (depth not a big deal) Case edited although I think might be a better case out there
I also talked him into an SSD, but I have not done a ton of research into SSD's as my personal computer was built almost 1.5 years ago when it wasn't in my budget.
Operating System not needed.
If I have missed something just let me know... Thanks guys.

if you are spending that much, definitely get at solid state drive, great upgrade.
Cases don't really matter too much, get him to choose one he likes the look of. And because they don't matter too much, dont pay too much.
Mobo wise if you are overclocking then get a Z77 mobo.
Also new processors come out in less than two weeks so you should probably wait till then.
4g of ram is the bare essentials, if he has more than one screen definitely get 8g (two screens encourages you to multitask and use more ram)
But you can get by on 4g if you don't have lots of stuff open at the same time.

Why are you buying that heatsink?

Stock settings, look at Extreme, not performance preset
Looks amazing at $500-600/500eu pricepoint, seems most people think even overclocked etc, it will be less than 10% weaker than titan, kinda knew this a while ago but it's looking even better than i thought.
Looks like AMD has nothing to compete with gk110 til their next gen
(crap, left this typed in for hours and forgot to hit post)

Is the build to be done ASAP or maybe after Haswell launch?

I think the price could definitely be higher than $500-600.

They are higher clocked etc; It's got 3gb VRAM, but memory bus etc seems to be fully intact (3gb vs 6gb irrelevant unless you're talking 4k or three screen, with AA, AFAIK)
We saw some 500 euro pricing and rumor seems to point towards $500-600, but honestly running like this, it doesn't have to even be at that price, it would just rule the high end market if placed there

When it comes to memory which one is better to have for video editing and photo editing more memory or faster memory
for example will it be better to have 16gigs or 8 gigs at a faster speed? and why. thanks
|
It's going to be closer to 600 than 500 euro for sure.
|
Depends how much you're using. Faster will be very slightly better if you can't make use of the space.
Usually you just want more. Memory is way way way faster than disk (or even SSD) access.

He is on vacation in Canada and got a taste of Mechwarrior Online on my brother and I's custom builds on max graphics and says he really wants a PC now, so I imagine he will get it in the coming weeks.
EDIT And what is wrong with the heatsink? Seems to get good reviews on Newegg from consumers....
I myself have a 212 Evo, and my brother has liquid cooling, just figured I would try something different.
And can someone MAYBE explain to me why gaming performance from a new Hasbro chip is really effectively used, even if he has a dedicated GPU

Yeah I realize that, but I'm worried that I'll get some kind of defective product or that Haswell will have some problems which will cause me numerous headaches. Sky is going to help me shop for a case once I've completed my build, and I have a cd drive I can re-use... Unless I need a new one of those too O.O
Earlier someone mentioned that I needed some new type of RAM or something because of how new my mobo is, which RAM should I get?
Thanks all for the help
edit: I just clicked this on an amazon ad, this is the type of RAM I'm looking for, right? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004CRSM4I/ref=dra_a_cs_lb_hn_it_P1100_1000?tag=dradis-20

And can someone MAYBE explain to me why gaming performance from a new Hasbro chip is really effectively used, even if he has a dedicated GPU Haswell is the code name for the next Intel CPUs. The current CPUs are "Ivy Bridge", the previous were "Sandy Bridge". It will be a tiny bit faster but also a bit pricier, at least at the start. It's probably not important to wait because of that. The boards for Haswell will also be a little pricier, I assume. Haswell CPUs will be named i5-4xxx compared to the current i5-3xxx. Boards will be socket LGA1150 compared to current LGA1155.
The CPU you chose with that "k" at the end is the one that can be overclocked a good bit. You should probably not choose that CPU. If you go with something that's not intended for overclocking like the normal i5-3570, you can also skip that aftermarket CPU cooler and just use the Intel cooler that comes with the CPU.
If you don't overclock you have free hand to choose the cheapest LGA1155 socket board you can find. You can also see if you find a CPU that's a good bit cheaper. Perhaps there's a good deal somewhere for i5-3470 for example. You can also look at the price for Xeon E3-1230v2 (that v2 is important) and higher. Those Xeons are similar to i7 CPUs but cheaper (which makes no sense).

Just want to do a last check on this before i buy it all, keep in mind i want to stream, i dont know what overclocking is so im not sure if i need it or not:
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard Power Supply: Rosewill Capstone 450 Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory GPU: MSI Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB Video Card Case: NZXT Tempest 210 ATX Mid Tower Case
Do i even need this? SSD: Samsung 840 Pro Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Suggestion on what i need to change, or what im missing
