Don't let the motherboard overclock. What it will do is use a BLCK that isn't 100, use tons of voltage, and give you a piss poor overclock of around 4.2ghz.
Overclocking to, say, 4.5ghz is a lot easier with modern CPUs than with CPUs of old. Basically you do this: - Make sure BLCK is 100. - Turn on all power saving features on. - Set the turbo ratio for all cores to 45. - Set offset voltage to 0.050V.
Go into Windows and run Prime95 and Intel Burn Test for a few minutes. If you pass the test, decrease the offset voltage by 0.005V. Keep doing so until you can't pass Prime95 and Intel Burn Test...this will tell you what the minimum voltage required to have a stable overclock at 4.5ghz. Takes a bit of time but not very much to keep track of or think about.
A few other things - Crucial has also had their share of firmware issues which some people are still having issues with apparently. Really, the SSD with the best track record is probably the Samsung 830. - Not sure if a GTX670 is really needed for a single 1920x1080 screen. What is he expecting? Everything completely maxed out and running at 60fps almost constantly?

thx Rannasha. Any recommendation for a MOBO then? with easy OC options. I recommended ASRock.
Thx for that Womwom. Probably not having to upgrade his GPU for 1-2y and still beign able to play Battlefield 5

a Evga 4GB 670 FTW/SC or a PNY 2GB 680?
i will be playing on a 2560x1440 res but i do connect the video card to a Led tv as well as a secondary monitor at times.
thanks in advance.
Not considering price or the specific brands, I would pick the 680 / 2 GB over the 670 / 4 GB. 4 GB is still pretty much overkill unless you use triple-SLI and/or multi-monitor gaming.
Hooking up another monitor to your machine without using it for gaming has almost no impact on memory usage.

The mobo is fine. Switch the CPU. Really. It's not "the best", it's just more expensive. Get a socket 1155 CPU (i5-3570k ideally, but 3770k if your colleague insists on wasting money).

Which issues does the Crucial have other than the 5000 hour bug? The 5K hour bug is pretty well known and has been fixed with a firmware update a year ago. People will still run into it if they don't have their pc on many hours per day.
The Samsung 830 is excellent as well, but it's a tad more expensive than the Crucial m4.

The most recent firmware (040H) is broken and has a bug where the SSD won't initialize. 000F is pretty much the most recent firmware that isn't complete rubbish.
The fact it seemed to add additional problems with the most recent firmware makes me question Crucial. As far as I know, Samsung (or the 830 at least) is pretty much the only SSD manufacturer that hasn't recently suffered from anything catastrophic regarding firmware or shitty controllers or whatever.

Before you get into the list I've provided I have a few notes of consideration. First, I have received a new i7-3770 for free. Would it be fine to throw this into my streaming computer, or should I buy an i7-3770k for overclocking capabilities? Second, I have a new GPU for my current gaming computer, so I will be throwing one of my old 570s into this streaming computer. I have built computers before, but the super in depth stats and expertise I don't really know much about, so any help is appreciated. So far I've attempted to come up with this on my own, though not complete: + Show Spoiler + HX850 is extreme overkill for a single GPU configuration, plus that is an older HX850 which is overpriced. A Rosewill Capstone 450 for $60 is more than adequate to handle an overclocked 3770 and GTX 570. 16gb of memory and 2133MHz is ridiculous as the gains over 2x4gb 1600MHz is going to be a single digit FPS at best. P8Z77-V Deluxe is very high-end and unnecessary unless you have a need for the dual NICs or another feature of the board Thank you for the reply, just the information I was looking for. I'd like to have the buffer room to turn it into a gaming pc in the future if needed, so i don't mind something overkill for the motherboard. I also have 2 570s, but because I am just building this as a streaming computer for the time being I only see the need to put 1 in because SLI gives me some headaches every now and then. Is 850 still overkill in this situation? As for the RAM, I was assuming that was a bit much, but I've read 2133MHz is preferred for encoding, so should I look for 2x4gb 2133MHz or not even bother?
Yep, 850w is still overkill even if you plan on doing SLI down the road. A Rosewill Capstone 650 and other 650w units are adequate for most SLI setups.
Motherboard doesn't have any effect on gaming performance and unless you plan on doing tri-SLI or doing a very high overclock, a $250 board isn't going to be any different than a $120 board. Plus, if you're going to be using a 3770 non-K then you should get a H77 board instead since you won't be overclocking.
Don't bother with 2133MHz. The difference isn't worth the money unless the rest of your configuration consists the best of everything.

300R is the also $60 ($50AMIR) at newegg until the 7th. TBH I would take that over the 200R.

@Thereisno... your build is a total mess and does not actually make any sense. You'd better fill up the formular from very first OP.
My apologies. In format:
Getting this all from www.pccasegear.com. Overall cost is around $1200. If someone has a cheaper option (noting that shipping from these guys will cost me <30 bucks) feel free to suggest.
Case: Antec Solo II mid PSU: Antec Neo Eco 620W MoBo: AsRock Z77 Extreme4 CPU: I5 3570 GPU: Powercolour Radeon 7970 3GB Mem: G.Skill Ares F3 16GB kit SSD: Corsair Force GT 120GB HD: Barracuda 2TB + random optical drive to be used for windows instalation and then burned at the altar of the omnissiah
My monitors are a dual setup of a 1600x1200 cintiq and a 1920x1080 HDtv I can probably afford another $2-300 if it will yield good results A primary aim of this system is that it should be quiet, so thoughts on that appreciated I may eventually add a second 7970 for crossfiring, so checking for any issues there, not sure if a 650W supply will be enough.
Apart from general comments, I'd like to know whether it's worth getting a K suffixed intel drive. Is CPU overclocking really necessary/worth the effort these days?
|
If you want to OC you need a K cpu yes, so the i5-3570k in your case.
Getting the cheapest 2*4gb ram kit running a 1.5V max will be good
For SSD you will prefer Crucial M4, Samsung Series 830/840, Plextor M3 or Intel
For your HDD the cheapest 7200RPM one you can find with the capacity you want
Getting the Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 implies you might one to CX later on? If so i'd look at the Rosewill Capstone 650, otherwise go for a cheaper mobo like Asrock Z75 pro3, MSI Z77A-G41/45 and the 450 version of the Rosewill Capstone
If you want a silent PC, getting a Fractal Design Define R4 Or Antec P280

Okay so i've got a better idea of what kind of gpu I am looking for right now. I'm willing to spend up to $400 dollars for a gpu that will run any game at at least 60 fps at full settings and right now i'm using a 1920x1080 resolution but some day may upgrade to 2560x1440. Could anyone point me towards something? Thanks!

That's not possible without Crossfiring / SLIing the best cards just so you know... unless you mean an average of 60 FPS with certain settings lowered or disabled.

Hello! I've been lurking the strategy forums for awhile but haven't reached a level of play where I have much to contribute. I would love some help putting this together. Hope this format is what's intended in the OP...many thanks.
(check spoiler for build info)
+ Show Spoiler +What is your budget? $300 to $400. Already own an AMD Radeon HD 6870 and may have access to a suitable monitor and hdd. What is your resolution? 1920x1080.What are you using it for? Gaming - Sc2 and older games. May want to upgrade machine by simply adding an audio interface (e.g. m-audio delta 1010) and also use as a midrange home audio studio. What is your upgrade cycle? If only for gaming, long: 3 years +. Audio upgrade would be a one-time in a few months, likely 1 or 2 year cycle after that. When do you plan on building it? Within a month or so.Do you plan on overclocking? No.Do you need an Operating System? Yes. Prefer Windows 7..Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No.Where are you buying your parts from? I'm in the U.S. but a rural area; prefer online retailers (e.g. newegg).

7870 if you stay 1920 x 1080 7950 if you go 2560 x 1440/1600

Thoughts on this build? I will be doing some overclocking, but nothing extreme. Want to stream well and max out any current/future proof games 1920x1200 to the best I can. Prefer the i7 because I have a first gen i7 now and I don't know how much an i5 3570k would be an upgrade and I'm afraid I'll notice the difference with the smaller cache/no hyperthreading.
