This is slightly over the $200 budget but it's well worth it. Okay nvm the $40 additional bundle savings might not be valid with a 2500k but I guess you can try and haggle with them.
Ouch, it looked like such a great deal too. Going over my budget will be a problem if I go to MicroCenter since they're at least 30 minutes away. That i5 looks really nice, though. I'm sure I can find a MOBO somewhere else.
EDIT: So right now, my build will be... CPU: i5 2500k $140 Micro Center GPU: MSI GTX 650 Ti $125 w/ Rebate Newegg MOBO: ??? HDD: Already have one RAM: Can I use my current one: Patriot Memory 2x 2GB 1333 PSU: Corsair CX430 $40 ($20 w/ Rebate) Newegg
So, for my $350-ish build, save the HDD & RAM, I'll be at around $285, giving me a little over $60 for a MOBO. If I turn it into a $400 build, what could I upgrade? Maybe get Aftermarket cooling so I can OC the CPU?

|
|
Extending to $400 is doable, just leaves me w/ less money for games for the mean time. I like this build, thanks for all the help! I might do some final changes if I get some things of mine get sold and I can go for a higher budget. I'll probably get the 2500K ASAP and wait a little for the rest.

OMG i5s for less than $150 (((( FU 'Murica!!!
Anyone in Europe got tips for cathcing CPUs (i5 particularly) at such steal prices? Obviously with VAT etc I'm not going to get as good as that, but what's the best possible? HWVS is great but shipping is 30 euro.

Hihi, I'm looking for some upgrades for my desktop, not because I have to, but because I can. Upgrading from P55extreme motherboard, GTX 560TI and an i5 2500, as well as an HDD, no idea what. I'm also pretty sure I have some 650w PSU and an aftermarket cooler.
For Xmas I got an ROG Maximus V Formula motherboard. From the price tag and size and shiny things etc, I'd guess it's pretty good and there's no reason returning it for something better, so I guess I'm building off of that. I mainly want to get a great CPU/GPU for SOME streaming and maxing taxing games, as well as multitasking lots of programs and shit(but I guess that's more on the HDD vs SSD side?) Price tag for this will be max 700$. But also, do I really have to get a better CPU if I don't intend to stream that much? Like, will I notice a difference if I run a high end GPU along with that on most of the more demanding games today, or won't it bottleneck at all? Cus if I won't see much of a difference unless I'm into video editing and streaming, I guess I'll just go balls out on a GPU and an SSD. Speaking of which, I don't really mind some seconds more of waiting while booting up/opening programs, so will an SSD really be worth it?
Sorry for clusterfuck text, I'm not too tech savvy

P55 motherboards are socket 1156, not compatible with socket 1155 processors like i5-2500. Which do you have?
Some kind of socket 1156 / 1155 Core i5 is still pretty good, can do what you want, playing games and streaming. Unless you actually need better, I'd wait until later to upgrade the CPU, when technology actually advances. GTX 560 Ti is still pretty good, but we're at least one architectural generation past that. You can upgrade that if you want.
It's not like an expensive motherboard like a Maximus V Formula actually does anything for you, actually improves any performance, compared to a cheap option. It's not worth building around, unless it's a gift you think you should be using. It's just built to handle multi-graphics card setups and not be the limiting factor when somebody wants to overclock for benchmark records with liquid nitrogen cooling. But if you really have a i5-2500, you can just put that in the motherboard if you want. Get a i5-3570k if you want to overclock and want to find a way to spend money without gaining much practically.
If you don't mind waiting around a few (sometimes more) seconds overall when running the computer, then you don't really need the SSD.
|
Thank you for fast response.
Ok my bad, CPU Z says I have an i5 661. How does that do compared to an i5-2500? Will upgrading that be essential if I end up getting a high-end GPU if I don't want to be bottlenecked by it?
|
i5-661 is a socket 1156 kinda-gimped dual core. It should be more than serviceable for most games, but I wouldn't call you out of your mind to upgrade that (particularly to stream, where it would be a liability). Get one of those socket 1155 k-edition processors and overclock to go with the new GPU.
Just don't forget peripherals and whatever else. IMHO everyone running some high-end GPU with a mediocre or worse monitor deserves a good smack upside the head coal in the stocking.
|
uhh, I have an asus ve247(h?) or something. Monitor thread said it was pretty decent for the prize I got it for at the time (A year-ish ago).
Ok so here are the processors I assume would be ok to buy ;
Intel® Core i5-2500K Processor Socket-LGA1155, Quad Core, 3.3GHz, 6MB, 95W, HD3000, Boxed w/fan
Intel® Core i5-3570K Processor Socket-LGA1155, Quad Core, 3.4GHz, 6MB, 77W, HD4000, Boxed w/fan Same pricetag of about 290$, so I really have no idea which of these I want Educated guess says 3570k -.-
and as for GPU, I have no clue what to get, so some pointers would be really helpful here
EDIT: Disregard the above
i5-3570k + 7950 seems like a good idea

iirc, Samsung 840 has some reasonably frequent sales on their 256gb drive, and I believe it performs better than the 520.
You probably don't need 16GB Ram, especially for gaming. Just get the cheapest 8GB set of RAM you can (30-35$)
Decide if you're overclocking... if you aren't, get a B75 motherboard and an i5-3570. If you are, that setup is fine although someone else can recommend the motherboard.
Windows 8 is pretty much better than Windows 7 imo (better boot time, better resource management (i think), definitely better task manager), unless you REALLY hate metro. It really is just a glorified start menu though, it's not like you can't use the desktop. And there's an app to return the start bar so it works like Windows 7 with all of the Windows 8 advantages. But if you really want Windows 7, it will still work just as well as it did in September.

Pricing does matter since there may be substitutes that are better and we can't exactly suggest stuff if we don't know whether you are overpaying or underpaying.
Most of the good items have already been sold out and pricematching isn't exactly the smartest thing to do during this time of the year since by the time the retailer gets around to it, the item may already be out of stock.
Hyper 212 EVO isn't on any spectacular sale unless you know something I don't (this is why pricing is important). The Coolermaster Hyper 212+ for $20 or Noctua NH-U12P SE2 for $40 or NH-D14 for $50 are much better deals.
16gb of memory isn't needed for gaming and poker but it's cheap so okay.
The P8Z77-V is relatively high-end and isn't on sale. Unless you know what you need out of the board or what you're doing, you don't need such a high-end board. There's a lot of 3570k bundles right now that are better than purchasing the 3570k and P8Z77-V separately like the P8Z77-V Pro, Z77A-GD65, Z77X-UD3H, and some lesser options.
Samsung 840 is already sold out, along with the Crucial M4. Unless you want to go line up tomorrow at Canada's Computer to pick one up for $150 (for first ten customers) / $160.

ASUS P8Z77-V LK ( $120 ) MSI Z77A-G45 ( $115 )
I'm looking for 6+ backplate USB ports, USB3, and SP/DIF Co-axial out (can be optional if there's a great motherboard under $75). The ASUS is useless, being so costly and without SP/DIF Co-axial, but the pricing on both are really lackluster. What are your opinions?
Does anyone have any knowledge of LG1155 Z77 motherboards with SP/DIF Co-axial out? Only one I've found MSI Z77A-G45. Looking for something preferably under $100 for Boxing Day/Week.

Only MSI boards has coaxial SP/DIF afaik. Every other manufacturer uses optical.

NCIX Gaming Bundle Deal Intel Core i5 3570K Quad Core & ASUS P8Z77-V Pro SLI DDR3 Motherboard getting this bundle then
NH-U12P SE2 isn't on sale on ncix.com, do you think memoryexpress will still have some left if i pricematch it (buying everything in like an hour or two) or i should just get the coolermaster hyper 212+?
i don't really mind paying 40$ more on the SSD if it's more reliable than the two others since i'll be mainly using it for everything poker related (also putting my OS on the SSD) so stability is very important. or what about if i buy this one: http://ncix.com/products/?sku=67708&vpn=SSDSC2CW120A3K5&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1033 will i have enough space for my poker related stuff, i'd guess so? :o

Good to know, that helps a lot for my bargain hunting. Thanks!
If anyone is in Canada, go to Tigerdirect tomorrow morning and see if you can snag a i5-3570K for $150. In-store only, and minimum 10 per store. gogo!~

It probably isn't going to sell out but the sale ends tomorrow and NCIX is processing two days worth of orders tomorrow so...
I don't see a reason why not just buy from ME since they offer flat shipping and you'll be buying memory from them as well.
Well you don't have a choice if you want ~250gb since the Samsung 840 and Crucial M4 are sold out. Poker software doesn't take up much space so 120gb would be fine.

Budget: $1100 Resolution: 1920x1080 Uses: Gaming, Photoshop, 3ds Max, Mudbox Upgrade Cycle: 3-4 years Overclocking: Possibly SLI or Crossfire: Possibly Operating System: Do not need (Windows 7)

The board and GPU are both packaged together as a boxing week deal.

This came out to about $1072 after the couple mail and rebates/sales (which end January 2nd seemingly). If all of this works well together, I'm willing to go up from the $1100 to $1200, for anything extra I may need (cooling?).
I already have a capable heat sink, and a couple fans, but they're getting on in years so I will probably replace them. Any suggestions there is appreciated.
I'm trying to find out if all of these pasts will be compatible together, fit in my case, perform well, and if there are better cheaper choices. I tried to do everything the best I could myself, but I very much doubt I'm quite as capable as the rest of you.
Anyways, I'd appreciate any help, thanks.

Most of the build is fine. Kingston HyperX isn't the best SSD, get a Samsung 840/Pro imo, although you can find some other stuff as well. I'm not too sure about prices in Canada, but Samsung, Inttel, and Crucial are generally the best brands to be looking for.
For a new heatsink, grab a hyper 212 plus, and I'm not too sure about the higher end heatsinks (not sure what is available in Canada/priced nicely). And not sure if there's anything better in the PSU to grab, somebody else will weigh in (I'd recommend Rosewill Capstone, but I believe that's US only). I can say that 650W is probably more than you need, a high end 450W would probably be fine.
