What I need: A desktop that I can play StarCraft2 and stream at the same time with ZERO lag. Able to stream at high resolution and FPS. Budget: $750 - $1,250 (Monitor and computer.) Upgrade Cycle: 2+ years. When do I plan on buying/building?: As soon as possible. Also I don't know if I should buy one that's already put together or buy all separate parts and put it together. Please recommend. Where am I buying from?: I don't know. Please recommend. If there is a kind person out there that is adept at building/choosing computers that would help me with this I would be extremely grateful. Please post in the thread if you think you have any useful advice or recommendations. Skype: Escaflowne132 PM me or add me on skype would be the easiest ways to communicate. I'll have some questions. Happy Holidays!

When watching recent/newer budget builds, there always seems to be the option of building an AMD APU or Intel Ivybridge PC. I've been thinking about the APU builds recently, and I've been wondering... On a $300-$400 gaming (1080p SWTOR/SC2/Elder Scrolls) build, minus the HDD, what would perform better: an APU system crossfire'd with my current HD4670 1GB, or an Intel Ivy bridge system? I plan on buying the parts off of Newegg and considering driving to a Microcenter about 100 miles away. Edit: *The 4670 won't work w/ the APU, apparently SUPEREDIT: Hi, I want to build a $350-ish budget gaming (SWTOR/SC2/Elder Scrolls) that I multitask a lot on (Skype/Facebook/Pandora). I'm considering APU since I heard that it was really good for the price, so long that I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon. CPU/GPU/APU: AMD A10-5800K $130 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113280 MOBO: ASRock FM2A75M-DGS Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157331&Tpk=ASRock FM2A75M-DGS Micro ATX FM2 Motherboard RAM: 8GB (2x 4GB) G.SKill Ripjaws 240-Pin 2133 DDR3 $50 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231519 PSU: Corsair 500W ATX12V 80 Plus Bronze $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027 HDD: (already got one, Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS 2TB) Case: (already got one, but might want to get a newer one) That brings me to $300! That leaves me w/ roughly $50 - $100 left. I'm thinking of getting more fans since I have seasonal heat problems, or saving up for a GPU that I can crossfire w/ the APU. So, whacha guys think? In most cases, you would be better off with Ivybridge. The Corsair CX500 for $60 is not good. The Rosewill Capstone 450 for the same price is significantly better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182066 If you want a less expensive option, you can get a Corsair CX430 as well for ~$20 less. And if you're not getting Trinity, you can save ~$20 and get 1333MHz / 1600MHz instead of 2133MHz memory. You would be able to afford a Radeon HD7770 which would be better than the IGP of Trinity. G.Skill Ripjaws tend to be less expensive and have heatspreaders that clear heatsinks.

1. Are all of these parts compatible? (i think they are but it doesn't hurt to double check) 2. What settings would i be able to use? (High/Medium....) 3. Will i experience many performance problems? (lag...) 4. Am I getting a good value? (price vs. performance) Here is the list Processor http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4904563&sku=A79-8352 GPU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3232816&sku=A455-7776 Motherboard http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1963472&sku=M452-6253 HDD http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3232686&sku=TSD-WD10EZEX RAM http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7104116&sku=K24-9917 PSU http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276573&sku=ULT-LSP650 CASE http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5520044&sku=T925-3018 So right now im right under 600 for this total build. Thanks :') Is there a reason why you are buying from Tigerdirect and not Newegg, Amazon, NCIX, or some other retailer? FX4100 is a very poor processor at retail pricing. It performs significantly worse than the equivalent Core i3 3220, worse than the Pentiums which are ~$50 less expensive, and worse than the older Phenom II X4s which are also less expensive. You do not need a 650w power supply and Ultra is not very good either. A quality 400w unit like the Corsair CX430 would be more than adequate for a low-end build. A Radeon HD7770 can do Starcraft II on ultra at 1080p but the card is about $125 so $150 for it is overpriced. At the $150 price point, you can get a better card like the GTX 650 Ti.

Okay, I'm going to buy an Intel 80gb X25-M as an SSD. It's used, 30 day warranty, for $59. I think this is the best SSD I can find with 64gb or more, at $60 or less.

You'd have to get a different motherboard if you went intel. thermaltake v3 is also a horrible case. Do you really need 1 TB hdd and 8gb of ram? I havnet used more than 40gb of hdd in 2 years on an sc2 streaming build, and i never go above 4gb of ram in gaming or general usage. the less space you need, the higher quality hdd/ram you can buy, and more importantly, the more money you save so you can put it elsewhere (a better case would go a long way for you, a better cpu would be appreciated at your price rnage, a better GPU would help too).

Overclocked, a phenom ii x4 will outperform an i3 (which costs more than phenom + heatsink). You can also stream on a phenom ii x4 whereas you can't really stream HD on an i3. It doesnt sound like you understand how to overclock so just buy the heatsink at a later date, and use the chip stock until you figure it out. Streaming makes things harder on the CPU, so we spend a little extra there: CPU: i5-3470 ($180) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=72279&vpn=BX80637I53470&manufacture=Intel&promoid=1285 Mobo - Asrock B75 ($75) Make sure to enter the promo code http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157314 RAM - 2x4gb Crucial ($36) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148662 GPU - 560ti ($130) This is overkill for SC2, you'll run that at ultra easy, but the extra power will come in handy for other games and isn't too expensive anyway http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ZT-50301-10B-BULK&cat=VCD Case - Bit Fenix Merc Alpha ($40) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=77540&vpn=BFC-MRC-100-KKX1-U3&manufacture=BitFenix&promoid=1285 PSU - XFX Core 550w ($50) Overkill wattage but on special. Not a good buy when it isn't on special http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59615&vpn=P1550SXXB9&manufacture=XFX&promoid=1285 HDD - Seagate 1TB ($68) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=65701&vpn=ST1000DM003&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1285 DVD-burner ($17) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=49597&vpn=DRW-24B1ST Bulk&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1285 Total: 596, not including windows, peripherals. Belial is sure to chime in with about four good paragraphs about how I'm a fool not to recommend a Phenom II x4. It's cheaper than the i5 I recommend, but also not as good. Not by a huge amount, but by enough the upgrade to an i5 should be worth it for a SC2-focused build. Also, ideally you'd like to be able to get an unlocked i5 & overclock it for streaming SC2, but that's not in your budget. This setup should do fine for streaming, though perhaps with a few hiccups at the really high quality settings. P.S. You asked on the wrong day. Some NCIX specials may change tomorrow, so if the prices seem off later, that's probably why.

I don't agree with your recommendation of a 560ti though. You can find the PRO555 for only $39 on ebay, and, it's overkill, i think for $19 the CX 430 is a MUCH better deal. The only reason you'd want to go with the pro550 is if you are doing SLI/Crossfire/multi gpu. Dont buy a dvd burner. Everything is available online for digital download and usb. no reason to use one of those, shave off $20 CX 430 instead = $30 off. Used 460 = $50 off. No DVD burner = $20 saved. 4gb of RAM = $20 saved. That's $120 saved, that means you can buy an i5-3570k, and a z77 motherboard on sale (microcenter!). NZXT Gamma Walmart.com $35 The NZXT Source 210 is also a good case at $19-29, its a gamma with no anti-vibration for the psu (just stick 3m tape under psu, and your good to go, if your psu doesnt have anti-vibration, that is, and if it even mattters, that is). Bitfenix alpha is a fine case too, but id say nzxt source/gamma are better. 4gb (8gb isn't necessary, you can always upgrade, ram is cheap, but if you want to get 8gb whatever) of RAM: 2 x X sticks (id recommend 2 x 2gb, but 2x4 for 8gb is fine too, just make sure to get 2 sticks for X total is the point) of CL9, 1.5v RAM. Cheapest possible. Ram doesnt matter, frankly, any CL9 1.5v ram works, even without a heatspreader. ram doesnt get hot unless you push extreme voltages, ie 1.8, 1.9v. whatever hdd. its a shame if you really need 1tb, you can find an ssd for around $70-100 and that's a million times faster than a hdd, there are good deals to be found, a samsung 840 for $99 128gb is a really good deal. Otherwise, cheapest 7200RPM of a quality brand (samsung, toshiba, wd... few others, cant recall exactly) and the more memory cache/better plate density, the better. sata ii of course. Get a 7950 GPU. If your really on a budget, you can buy a gtx 460 on ebay used for $60-80. If you can't afford a 7950, i'd say the 460 used (or new i guess) is the best deal you'll find. better than a 550ti even. overclocks like a beast, a 560 (a very good card) is just an overclocked 460. the corsair CX430 at newegg for $19 after rebate is a great deal. Better than any other psu under $50 (except the xfx pro555 and neo eco 520 which are on rebate sales but dont worry about that). Microcenter has the i5-3570k for $190. Buy a cheap z77 motherboard and a hyper212, you should be within budget (asus pro 3). Get the hyper212+ one day and overclock when you have an extra $20.

I'm an hour and a half from MC, so its not too close (or rather, its close enough for me but not for me to mail to you), but there are plenty of TL guys by one. The Phenom ii x4 is like 50-80% of the performance for only 30-40% the cost (mobo included). An i5 3570k build can be had for under $600 but your gonna really have to find some amazing sales (the cx430 for $19 being a big help, for example) and cut some serious corners (used gpu, less hdd/ram, cheaper case). Things like less hdd, only 4gb of ram, cheaper case, won't make a difference in performance in most cases, a cheaper, used gpu may be all you need, etc.

I am posting to ask for a quick run down of how to choose a mobo. I ask 'cos I am not really sure what differentiates a lot of them. Features I suppose (what they support?). What is the go-to mobo if I want to upgrade to an i5 3570k? I currently have a Phenom II x4 925. Will I still be able to use my copy of Windows when I install the new mobo? Thanks!

More RAM isn't really going to help things unless you're running a silly amount of things at the same time and a new case/better cooling isn't really going to do much. 80 degrees is fairly high for a GPU under load but its not absolutely dire. If its running at 90 degrees constantly then you've got a problem but 80 degrees is fine, especially if your ambient temperature is high. I'm fairly certain your case has these things. ![]() Firefox has about 15 tabs open and there are also some random other programs like steam running in the background.
