Hey guys, I will be buying new parts for my computer and I am hoping to get a few tips. I plan on using my old Antec case (Sonata III) since it has a strong power supply with 500W and will fit an ATX card which I plan on getting.
What is your budget?
I will be buying a monitor, CPU, GPU, RAM, SATA and a motherboard I and want it to be below 900$.
What is your resolution?
I will be getting a 1920x1080 monitor.
What are you using it for?
Gaming, games such as SC2, DotA 2, NS2 and SF4. I am not too obsessed with high graphics but I really want to run on a high frame rate.
What is your upgrade cycle?
I do not upgrade very often, I've had this computer since 2008 and feel it is time for an upgrade. I wish this build will work for atleast 4 years.
When do you plan on building it?
I will order parts this week and will build as soon as my parts arrive.
Do you plan on overclocking?
No not right now but maybe a few years in the future.
Do you need an Operating System?
I will be using Windows 7 Ultimate, but I do not need to purchase a new one.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
No.
Where are you buying your parts from?
A swedish company called Inet which I think is great, good prices and good parts. (I've compared with other swedish companies)

Hey guys: I need to buy a new mobo/CPU. I'm looking at this setup right now: :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80637i53570k) | $169.99 @ Microcenter **Motherboard** | [Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gaz77xud3h) | $147.86 @ Newegg **Memory** | [Corsair XMS3 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-memory-cmx8gx3m2b1600c9) | $37.99 @ Newegg | | **Total** | Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available. | $355.84
Any thoughts? I need it to stay under 400 dollars. I have an msi gtx 560 ti twin frozr II, plenty of HD space, a 750 watt silencer pc power and cooling and an antec 900 case.
I can pick this stuff up today for 375 or so.

i don't know if this is a good place to post for this but i've always found this thread the most reliable.
my friend is looking to order a prebuilt gaming laptop for 6-700$ that runs any of the newer games well enough to not lag. can anyone help me out?

Uhhh, you might be able to get one that can run games on low settings for that much. I hope he's not expecting great graphics on a laptop for only 700.

This is really the best thing I can think of with gaming power @ 700$, but that's without an OS... you might be able to get an HP or an on sale last gen Lenovo of some kind.
Lenovo Y570 last gen lenovo gaming pc for 650$, that's probably your best bet.

Hi there,
I currently think about upgrading my Computer. Started my apprentince ship and earned my first wages.
However, I'm quiet unsure about the specific hardware. The market seems to be overloaded with great stuff. I'll tell you what I want:
- Playing SC2 in Extreme mode with 8 players++ - Playing SC2 1v1 and stream with at least 720p - Be able to play Marine Arena
Hardware I currently run with:
- CPU: AMD Athlon II x4, 3GHz - RAM: 4x Kingston 2GB, 1,3 GHz - Graphics Card: XFX HD 6870 - MoBo: GA870A-USB3
I thought about changing my MoBo and CPU. My Graphics card is fine, I can play BF3 and that's enough. RAM seems top go to it's edge but I don't wanna get new ones yet.
CPU I'm looking at is an Intel i5 3570K (Ivy). (~200€) I'm unsure about streaming and playing. But I also don't want to invest 300+ bucks.
I actually don't know how Motherboards change performance. The Z77 chipset seems to be solid, so I looked at it. I decided for an Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H (~100€).
That's what I'd like to upgrade to.
Would be kind if someone could tell me is this is good or not. I'm not sure about the motherboard, 4xUSB3 is great but only 2xSATA3. Is the difference between SATA3 and SATA2 significant (running a 7200 rpm HDD)?
Thanks in advance.
|
That's fine, makes sense. Get a reasonable heatsink (some tower cooler with 120mm fan so long as the height is not too much for your chassis, should be no more than 30 euros) so you can overclock.
There's no difference in SATA3 and SATA2 for running mechanical hard drives. Their transfer speeds are all slower than SATA2 by a good margin, so SATA3 does not really contribute much.

bought the pc today! decided not to even wait for black friday sales. heres what i went with:
i5-3570k ASrock Z77 Extreme 4 Motherboard Samsung 830 series 128 GB SSD Thermaltake Tough Power 575W-M [to allow room for eventual crossfire] Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 3GB [3 free games (FarCry 3, Hitman, Sleeping Dogs & %20 discount off of medal of honor $169.99 value] Cooler Master v8 Heatsink Cooler Master HAF 912 Team Elite 8GB RAM LG DVD Burner
initially I placed half of the order on amazon, and half of the order on newegg. In the amazon order i had a refurbished Dell U2312HM. I was uneasy about making this purchase because of the refurb so i eventually canceled the order. Then a few hours later I realized Newegg doesn't have a sales tax for where i'm at so I canceled the entire amazon order and just went with Newegg and saved about $30.
Has anyone or would anyone purchase a refurbished monitor? it was $100 off the original price, $60 cheaper than Newegg. I think the monitor is the only piece of my build that I will hold off until black friday/cyber monday
I also made a trip to microcenter this morning to pick up the cpu, motherboard & heatsink. I finally got a chance to see the haf 912 which i was originally skeptical about when you guys first advised me to buy it. But the case looks amazing lol, i'm so excited and i can't wait to finally get it. looking at pictures of the case really doesn't do justice. I was expecting a low end case like my last $30 xigmatek. The case is extremely solid & it's huge. thanks for the advice here. :D
was going to go with a simple Hyper 212 but i just decided to go with the v8 purely on looks. it looks like a mini car engine running in your pc lol. its sick .
total cost of the pc alone came to $971 not including the RAM i already own.
just want to tell those who help people like me, skyr, myrmidion and many others, i seriously appreciate all the help! :D
also happy birthday to myrmidion, have a good one brother

Some detective work on anand's GPU bench gives me that a 7970 draws about 40w more than a 7950 under load(whole computer) AT REFERENCE Frequency. CF 7970's draw ~640w underload, so 640-80=560. 560w under load for cf 7950's at reference freqency. Yeah you aren't going CF with that 575w unit, unless you like stock clocks. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/550?vs=508 http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/550?vs=588

yeah clocks will remain stock most likely. i was aware of it being close, someone set me up with it a few pages back. i might not even overclock the cpu that much either. depends on how much is necessary for my streaming needs. appreciate the concern :D i also may not even get a second gpu, just something im contemplating

Why do detective work? (Guessing AnandTech CPU power draw, power supply losses, other config...just isn't worth the trouble.) http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7950_CrossFire/22.html
btw, do people overclock Crossfire graphics cards a lot on air cooling? I certainly wouldn't imagine trying to increase the voltage by any significant amount. Overclocked i5-3570k power draw would still be well under 100W at sane settings.
|
One case Delta fan is enough to cool a quad GPU sandwich with everyone of them overclocked and the GPU fans might as well be off.
|
I should have added a "without the aid of howling banshees 4000+ rpm 120mm fans or equivalents" clause at the end, huh.
|
Hahahaha.
Anyway. I'd imagine most Crossfire setups are with reference models so yeah you can go pretty far with just air.
