I'm talking about your gaming resolution. If you are really gaming at that resolution, it isn't surprising at all that your desktop isn't kneeling over. After all, its basically a laptop crammed with desktop parts so...

The easiest way is to look at the case and/or open it up. Mostly you're just looking for the number of expansion slots for add-in cards. ATX has 7, microATX has 4, miniITX has 1.
With some digging around, it looks like the motherboard is DTX or some other variant (these are uncommon, particularly at retail) with only 2 slots. It won't fit microATX or ATX. A miniITX motherboard may fit, but it doesn't seem like there are mounting holes for that. You'd need to mod in your own support. Also, miniITX motherboards tend to be relatively expensive.
edit: http://www.widgetsinc.com/shop/product3012.html
Looking at another picture, it seems like the hard drive fits in above where the processor heatsink/fan would be (so a conflict) on a normal miniITX motherboard. Or not? I didn't look too hard. That Dell layout is really wacky.
A new case need not necessarily cost $70. Some kind of cheap BitFenix Merc Alpha / Beta or low-end Cooler Master is flimsy, but it should be serviceable and more like $35-40. You can usually get something better on sale for around $50.

That looks like a BTX mobo to me.

*checks again*
Never seen a Pico-BTX before, but I guess that's it.

Amazingly helpful. There is a 35$ case at the custom PC store but I'm skeptical about it so I guess I'll get to shopping for a better one on sale.
I'll be starting my build tomorrow and if I hit any snags, I'll be back. Thank you very much.

Just making sure, but a new case won't fit the old power supply (natively), not that you would want to use the old one.
If you're buying in some store, than any price estimates may be way off.

So i asked for suggestions on a $800~ build, but didnt get any responses, so i went ahead and made a build myself, hopefully this time i can get some feedback on it:
CoolerMaster RC430 Black Edition 500WPSU Seagate SATA3 1TB 7200RPM 64mb Cache Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H Z77 Intel Core i5 3570K LGA1155 CPU 3.4Ghz 6Mb Cache Ivy Bridge Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) Vengeance low profile Generic samsung 24 inch screen/generic dvdr
and im throwing in my last video card: Sapphire HD6870
comes to $780(AUD).
thoughts? feedback?

Hi guys with November comes cyber Monday and not too far in the distant future Christmas and tax return time.
I bought a pre-built system in early December of 2009 for around 900 dollars. When I bought the system a few months later at the recommendation of a friend I feel like I made a really terrible choice as I went for a mid-tier system at best even at the purchase date for the price.
These are my current computer specifications really rough.
*Generic Gigabyte Mobo (pretty sure its on the low end of the spectrum) *E-8400 3.0 stock Processor *GTS 250 1 GIG *4 GIGz of DDR3 1,600 MHZ RAM *850 PSU
I feel like even at the time I should have just went for a slightly more expensive i5 build which I think would of kept me from even having to upgrade at this point however whats done is done and I would just like not to repeat the mistake and I have someone local to me who is willing to assemble the thing for free.
So with that being said I would rather save the extra 200/500 dollars in cost of assembly/shipping.
I will answer the format that was provided on the first page of this post and hope it will be enough for someone willing enough to give me some knowledgeable advice in regards to what I need for what I want to do with my new rig.
*Budget - 1,500/2,000k USD I am flexible and even willing to go above this.. I am not into spending a lot of money but I want a system that can not only meet all of my requirements now but I want the ability for updatability and the EASE of which I can do that.. so what I am trying to answer is the "upgrade cycle" question.. I would prefer to have to upgrade once every 1.5/2 years while still being able to run and play the newest games without much stress to my system.
Which is why my price range is not only so high but also very flexible I would even be willing to go above the 2K mark if I could warrant the money i.e it makes sense.
*Purpose - Mostly gaming but I have always wanted to dabble into video editing and also streaming which I know requires a good computer system for rendering, encoding, and streaming at 720-1080p+ while still having a smooth time playing whatever game it is that I want to play.
I want to once again say it is primarily for gaming but being able to put together some sick frag montages would make me a happy little nerd if I had the computer that could handle it. I know I am basically asking for everything so I guess what I should say is I want a system that is versatile and let me once again remind you I am all about being able to upgrade easily in the future so I don't need the bleeding edge tech today or in the next 2 months rather if something can fulfill my expectations at a lower cost I would be more then happy to pay less by all means.
*Upgrade Cycle - Already answered but basically 1.5/2 years.
*Purchase + Assembly - As I mentioned before Cyber Monday, Christmas, and tax returns coming in January I would say late December of 2012 early 2013 so basically 3 months give or take.
*Overclocking - No, not interested in this at all.
*OS - Win7 64 BIT / Win8 I have a 15 dollar upgrade key so that isn't really of any consequence regardless it will all depend on the advice I get from you guys in terms of I would assume lack of driver support and other applications/software possibly not being compatible RIGHT AWAY with Win8.
*SLI - Yes please, if it makes sense or would help with video editing, encoding, rendering and also making streaming more seamless and smooth assuming that is of course it would I would assume as much but I am totally uneducated on any of those things so that might just be a ignorant opinion.
*Origin of parts - I would love if I could get it all from newegg.com as I trust them and they have a warehouse close to me which means delivery time will be minimal which is just an added bonus.
Obviously with me trying to get the best sales from the Holidays as long as the site is reputable and based within the US I would be more then happy to order from another site without much hesitation.
Case/PSU/HDD vs SSD... So confused.. and I don't know really.
I want a full size tower because they are in my opinion just easier to work with the minimal work I can do to my own system and obviously large cards or running SLI I could imagine it would be better for heat + space and easier to work on.
The only thing I would like in a case is something with good airflow, lot's of silent fans. LED's and anything fancy not really needed but if you could offer a suggestion that is decent in price I am open minded.
SSD??? I guess this would just in general be good for anything regardless of what activity I am doing and I know from reading this guide and doing other reading that just in general SSD is superior assuming you can afford it I don't need anything crazy like a 240GIG SSD but something maybe for my OS and primary programs + games for optimal performance would be fantastic.
I guess a 2TB HD for backup/storage wouldn't matter too much as the SSD.
If I forgot something please let me know what I missed and I will be checking back often to see if I have any responses.
Just for whoever might stumble upon this and read it just know that I appreciate your time, help, and consideration because this is just a big gift to myself since I have been on a upswing lately and just want to have something I can really enjoy.
Looking forward to seeing any responses :-D

I ran prime95 blend test and about half a minute after running my CPU temps were in the high 90s. I have a sandy-bridge CPU. Is this normal or does this mean I need to buy another fan or something?
I decided to run this test because when I play sc2, i notice that my CPU temps are in the 70s. They are currently idling right now at about 50C. I should mention that I built this PC about two years ago. Haven't really had issues with CPU temps until recently.
|
That idle is way too high, i'd reset the cooler change the thermal paste etc, it probably came loose or something for w.e reason.

Z77X-UD3 seems likely overkill (also may not be worth going Z77 + i5-3570k on this budget, when non-overclocked i5 is already so fast for most things), and the bundled Cooler Master power supply is crap.
If he doesn't play twitch shooters, there were some IPS monitor alternatives there that may look better (also the BenQ GW2x50HM VA options), though Samsungs are usually at least okay.

its for my lil bro, just games, prob recording and video editing, and whatever else 15 year old kids do these days. what would you suggest (parts from: umart.com.au), and yea i suspected that psu is shit, il prob have to fork out abit more.
and yea he does play twitch shooters, which is why i opted for that one, he wants a 120 hz one but there arent any viable options since the xl2410t stopped being stocked.

Hi, first time poster to this thread. I'm looking to build a ~$1000 desktop with both SSD/HD this November and would like feedback on this build I found:
What is your budget? ~$1000 What is your resolution? 1920x1080 What are you using it for? Gaming and general usage on 1920 x 1080 resolution. I'm not obsessed about graphics but would like it to run anything tolerably for a few years. What is your upgrade cycle? 2+ years ideally When do you plan on building it? This November (Black Friday time) Do you plan on overclocking? No Do you need an Operating System? Yes Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No, unless there is a very good reason for it I haven't heard Where are you buying your parts from? Online/Fry's
Case Fractal Design Core 3000 $50
Power Supply Antec Neo Eco 400C $50
CPU Intel Core i5-3570K $230
Motherboard Biostar TZ77B $100
Video Card XFX Radeon HD 7950 Double D $320 or EVGA Superclocked GTX 660 Ti $300
RAM Samsung 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 $45
SSD Samsung 830 128GB $100
HDD Western Digital 1TB Black $90
DVD Burner Lite-On IHAS324 $20
Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit $91
Total: $1096
I assume it would always be cheaper to build than to order from a Custom vendor even with Black Friday specials? Thanks!

Sounds like a i7 setup will help you, personally with an i7 setup it should last about 3 years give or take. Since you say newegg warehouse is near you, I assume you live in Cali =P so hey theres a store called mircocenter which sells cpu cheaper for 50 bucks if your willing to make the drive down there
Build I would go with: i7 3770k (I know you dont want to overclock but hey in the future, u may what to boost your performance for no money)~330 now i7 stock cpu fan sucks, so instead get a 3rd party fan, I recommend COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 EVO, cheap and cools very well~30 motherboard, I like asus/gigabtye and it seems you have a gigabyte board before so lets stick with that, and since you want to go with a sli setup lets look at some high end ones GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-UD3H LGA 1155 Intel Z77, it has 2 pci 3 slots which is great for your sli setup~150 Now ram i recommend 16gbs, why? well your looking to do video editing/streaming/high end gaming and it tends to help if you have more ram =P (get the 1600mhz nice perforance boost for a small price) / (get 4 sticks of 4gb ram, there will be some on sale during black friday/cyber monday, im sure newegg will have something) Now hard drives, it seems like you want speed/storage so i recommend doing a ssd boot drive w/ a 2tb storage drive, I use a samsung 830 which is great for its price/speed and for the storage drive get a wd green (those might be on sale on black friday) Graphics card, i recommend just going for a single card first and then see if you really do need the 2nd card, sli does help with video editing but I don't know if its worth the cost for you. Since your going for video editing, i suggest gtx 660, if want to go higher maybe the 670 NOW Power supply, never ever chea out theres some 700w oens for like 30 bucks but its not worth it, always buy a quality psu, for this setup 650w is pretty much more than enough CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W (also watch during black friday, psu go on sale too) Now case, your choice w.e looks good
Hope this helps

looks solid, the amd hd 7950 is a better ddeal if you willing to overclock it (most games score higher with teh hd 7950 than the 660) personally I dont think the wd 1tb for 90 is agood deal.. you have a ssd drive for boot/program so might as well get a wd green drive instead? Also look for deals during blackfriday for RAM/SSD/Hard drives/Dvd Burners/Power supplies savigns can probly bring you under 1k

seeign as you have a sapphire hd 6870, I assuem you are upgrade from the older generation i5, if you are dont bother upgrading yet and wait for the next gen cpus. The newer gens don't offer that much improvement for gaming the better investment would to buy a ssd drive.
If thats not the case, the build is fine for that price

First things first: You don't say you're overclocking yet you have a Z77 motherboard and 3570K, also you set on ATX? Fractal Core 3000 is terrible. XFX's cooler design just terrible this generation of AMD cards, 660Ti is a bandwidth starved GTX 670. Also these cards are overkill for what you say you need. I have a 5 year old 9800GTX and I'm able to play skyrim on high (at 1280 x 1024 so meh). 8GB of ram can be bought cheaper than $40. DVD burner can be bought cheaper. Motherboard is your barebones Z77, by a second tier outfitter. No real reason to have a Black drive as storage. Power supply isn't bad but its about the most important component in a computer.
Now for Combo Deal finding on newegg: Oh and this assumes you aren't Overclocking as per the Questionnaire

You see there is no HDD in this build, its because the Crucial m4 256gb is on crazy sale. Also the power of combo deals saved $26, nothing to scoff at. Pretty funny though you can combo with single sicks of ram.

DVD Burner Lite-On IHAS324 $20
Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit $91
Total: $1096
I assume it would always be cheaper to build than to order from a Custom vendor even with Black Friday specials? Thanks!
Now for Combo Deal finding on newegg: Oh and this assumes you aren't Overclocking as per the Questionnaire i5-3570 $199.99 with promocode HARDOCP1X31F, ends 11/6 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115233MSI H77MA-G43 mATX & Crucial 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3-1600 $95.98 ($5 Mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1115928Sapphire HD7870 & Crucial 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3-1600 $257.98 ($15 Mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1123201Crucial M4 256GB SATA III $164.99 with promocode EMCYTZT2478, ends 11/5 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148443Cooler Master HAF 912 $59.99 ($10 Mail in rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233Rosewill Capstone 450-M 60+ Gold & DVD Burner $70.98 with promocode RWNEB20, ends 11/7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1095195Win7 - where your getting it $91 Total: $940.91 $30 in Mail in Rebates You see there is no HDD in this build, its because the Crucial m4 256gb is on crazy sale. Also the power of combo deals saved $26, nothing to scoff at. Pretty funny though you can combo with single sicks of ram.
Thanks for the in-depth feedback, appreciate it a lot. I'm not set on ATX, but I'm rather inexperienced so not sure pro/cons of alternatives Do you think getting my original graphics card or better would delay the need to upgrade in the future or do you still stand by your suggestion? Is there a cheap place to buy OS that I'm missing? Amazon seems about that and lowest on Google Shopping around ~80
Also I notice some of these deals expire pretty soon (as early as today even). Do you think these are worth jumping on or should I hold out the extra 2ish weeks until black friday/cyber monday?

Power Supply Antec Neo Eco 400C $50

ATX is just the formfactor of the motherboard. It's the standard type. You also have mATX, which is smaller and ITX, which is even smaller. As long as your case can house an ATX motherboard (and all non-tiny cases can), it will normally have mounting points for all the smaller formats as well.
Motherboard formfactor is a non-issue unless you're building a machine that is as small as possible.
