I guess my question is, is the cheaper hardware just older hardware? Or do they release cheaper, budget hardware as well? The stuff coming next month is called Sandybridge. Announcement is on January 5th and retail availability are expected on the same day or by January 9th. This is the mid-range release which means it will replace the current 1156 processors in the sub $300 market (core i5 750, 760, core i7 860, 870 ...) The P67 motherboards will go for prices similar to the P55 boards, somewhere between $100 to $300 (depending on features, etc). Just because new stuff is coming out does not mean old stuff will drop in price. Look at the past processors that are no longer produced, they're still being sold at the same price that they were two-three years ago. Keep that in mind when deciding.
So would you reccomend that I wait on buying an i5-760 w/ a P55 Motherboard and go for Sandybridge before I build my computer? Or are the differences relatively negligable?

If you're not in desperate need of a computer right now than a 3 week wait isn't going to hurt. I'm building a new PC as well and am waiting until Sandybridge. Going to purchase a 2500k =)

So I think I'll wait then, thank you for your advice! You think a 2500K is the best model for gaming?
Edit: Also, what video card do you plan on buying? And will I need to change my power supply to run this cpu/motherboard?

You are going to purchase this PSU?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139006?
The current processors are 45nm and the new ones are going to be 32nm so they're going to be more power efficient. 750W is more than enough, there's nothing to worry about.
I'm getting a 2500k because I want to overclock. I think 2400 or 2500 would be best if you don't want to overclock.
I plan on getting an MSI GTX 460 1GB Hawk for $185 (http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=55409&vpn=N460GTX%20HAWK).

If you're planning to buy/build a new computer at this time, or within the next few weeks, you're better off waiting until SB comes out. It's set to hit the market in Jan 9, just a little under a month from now, and all the new models beat the current ones clock for clock. The price range is pretty close to the current one now as well.
Unless you have a really good, justified reason to buy/build a computer right now, you're much better off waiting a few weeks for the new line of models to hit the market.
Technology is advancing at an ever so fast rate. But 2011 is going to be a big year for computers because the next generation of processors, SSDs, and GPUs are being released.

I'm looking to cut the cost of my build a little. What do you guys think of getting a AMD Athlon II X4 640 instead of the AMD Phenom II X4 955? Benchmarks i have looked at rate them similarly, im just looking to play sc2 and stream a little.
|
I would downgrade graphics before CPU if you want to stream but it depends on what quality you want to run sc2 at

So i just finished building after taking hours and being very meticulous and precise. I am near positive everything is set up correctly but i'm having a huge problem. When I turn on my pc I'm getting no display from my monitor. My monitor button is lit up yellow as if it's not receiving any signal rather than green.
Here is the gfx card i'm using: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121390
and my motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130275
i seriously have no clue whats going on. I'm sure its being powered (the fan spins when i turn on the computer)
also my monitor is dsub so i'm using the converter that came with the graphics card.
the card is definitely in the right slot on the motherboard and is definitely locked into place.
i'm so confused, any help would be amazing!

- The card should be in the most top PCI-E x16 slot. - Both 6-pin PCI-E connectors should be plugged in - try another DVI port - You can also try the other PCI-E x16 slot.

@skyr
- The card should be in the most top PCI-E x16 slot.
It is
- Both 6-pin PCI-E connectors should be plugged in
they are but one is 8 pin (2 extra pins that are sort of separate dangling away
- try another DVI port
tried this
- You can also try the other PCI-E x16 slot.
my card is to big to fit on the bottom slot

Do you have another card to test or can you test the card in another computer?

The x1300 pro was a low-end card. All the lower end cards (even todays) just receive power from the PCI-E x16 slot.
So its probably not your GPU that's causing the problem if you've tried another card.
- Is your 24pin and 8pin connectors plugged into the motherboard? - Try with one stick of ram?

and i'll try removing a stick of ram.
edit: removed 1 stick, still no luck...
a side note i'm hearing now beep when i turn the computer on. how do i know if my case has it's own internal speaker or whatever thats supposed to make that beep?

Your motherboard has a 24pin connector beside your ram slots and a 8pin connector to the left or above your cpu socket. Both of these should be connected to your power supply.
Sorry but don't know much about beeps.

well i feel like a moron.... the 8 pin connector to mobo was never connected. LOL

go into your bios setup and change the boot order. Have it boot from cd before system hdd before other hdds. Right now it is either trying to boot from a hdd that doesn't have an operating system on it, or through the error you got with your "special copy" your installation failed and it can't boot from your system hdd. Cd is lower than hdd in the boot process right now, so the xp cd isn't recognized as the device you want to boot from.

Hey TL,
I want to build myself a new PC for gaming and movies mainly. I used to be into computer builds and whatnot but I have not been keeping up to date for a couple of years now so it turns out I don´t know anything anymore for practical purposes. Please advise on a computer build that will suit my needs adequately, I will post the questions on the OP and fill them in for your convenience.Thank you for your time and help, it is much appreciated.
What is your budget?
2000 - 2500 USD
What is your resolution?
I need to buy a new display for this rig as well. I guess the resolution would be limited by the display, hence the highest possible/feasible for the display chosen?
What are you using it for?
I will be using this computer for gaming of all sorts and general office work (no photoshop, no Autocad or any other design software)
What is your upgrade cycle?
My upgrade cycle is long. Since importing tech to my country is expensive and time consuming, I only do it every once in while (2 + years), so it must be built to last.
When do you plan on building it?
I plan on acquiring these parts around mid to the end of February.
Do you plan on overclocking?
No
Do you need an Operating System?
No.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?
A priori no, but if you think it provides a substantial benefit in any major department, I might consider it.
Notes
I am moving to a new apartment and this computer will be placed in my new "office". In the living room I am going to put a new, 46 inch HD flatscreen. I would like to watch HD media from my computer on this TV. What is the best way to do so, considering the TV would be located in a separate room than the computer?. Achieving this objective is paramount to building the rig in question (HD GSL on 46 inch tv...)
Thanks!
