Hey, since my old computer's beginning to die on me, I wanted to assemble a new computer on my own. I'm new to assembling computers.
I have a 400$ budget, and I do not plan on overclocking.
I don't have a very specific task I need to do on this computer, I'd just like that the computer will run quickly for several years to come and that it would run games relatively well.
I don't need too much space in my hard drive, and I have a 1280 x 1024 resolution.
I want to finish this computer in about a month, and I can buy parts online, microcenter, or fry's (I haven't been to either of these stores though).
I don't have an OS but... + Show Spoiler +Is it possible to get a "non-geniune" copy of windows 7/XP sp3? Is it worth the work- what are the pros and cons? Is it as simple as burning the ISO file onto the disk?
Sorry if I missed a few things- and thanks for helping!

What the fuck is going on with toasters?
Diablotek PSU is a ticking time bomb waiting to blow up your computer and take everything with it. Replace immediately with anything with a good brand name and is cheap.
Motherboard is overpriced for such a configuration, would have been better off spending the money elsewhere.

Which came first, TheToast or the fuckton of toasters?

+ Show Spoiler +Yes its totally possible and it works fine including updates.

@Toasterbaked. We look down on stealing on this forum. Don't ask about it. If you're desperate for free windows, just join the Windows 8 trial program and download windows 8 for free.
As for the rest...
CPU & mobo: AMD Phenom II 965be + Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P ($100 combo deal @ microcenter)
Normally for a budget pc, I'd recommend the g630 with a cheap motherboard, but the phenom here is actually $20 cheaper because of the free motherboard. If, while at microcenter, you can get a deal on an i3 + any compatible motherboard that is equal price or only like $10 more, go for that. I can't believe I'm recommending a Phenom. If SC2 is your main game, you should buy the i3-2100 at microcenter anyway, and then go with an msi h67a-g43 @ newegg if there isn't a mobo combo deal at microcenter.
CPU Cooler: Stock AMD cooler. The motherboard above is not what one calls fantastic, so you won't be able to overclock much if at all without getting an aftermarket cooler.
RAM: Kingston HyperX 2x2gb 1600mhz ($29) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231424 If you go with Intel, use different RAM.
GPU: EVGA 560se (with Adobe Elements thrown in) ($137 - $10 rebate) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130770
Case: Bit Fenix Outlaw ($45) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=63255&vpn=BFC-OLW-100-KKN1-RP&manufacture=BitFenix&promoid=1223 Case is largely a matter of personal preference. This is a decent budget case that's not wacky looking. If you want shiny, wacky, with blue LEDs, look at the Zalman z9 or z11 cases.
PSU: Antec Neo Eco 450c ($35) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60491&vpn=NEO-ECO450C&manufacture=Antec&promoid=1223
HDD: WD Caviar Blue 500gb ($65 after promo code) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769 Only like $20 to double the size to a 1TB, and another $25 or so to go to 2TB, depending on your space needs. Also, SSD not included, but might be nice if you have more $$ later.
DVD-burner ($10) http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=60731&vpn=GH22NS70&manufacture=LG Electronics USA&promoid=1223
Total: $421 - $10 rebate.

I was supposed to order my computer last week, but never got around to it before I ended up moving.

That looks good to me, except
1. the RAM has those stupid heatspreaders 2. no CPU cooler other than the small boxed one with the i5-3570k (not really suitable for overclocking) 3. no hard drive? maybe you have one
As for monitors, if you're getting something from NCIX, the Asus PA238QR should be a very good deal at $220: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=69432&promoid=1223
If you can't afford that, are willing to drop to 21.5" and give up all kinds of stand adjustments, VS229H-P is $164: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=69496

It fills the price point the 550ti failed at for nvidia well enough. That said, for toaster, this could be a superior alternative if you can stand the upfront price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561

You live in a walk-in fridge or something? -_- no but where im living my room is loaded with AC and i like it cooooold, and its got like a shit tons of fans in it, well apparently my cpu main chip is like 20 degrees celc when its off for a while, but when i turn my pc back on and the fans start kickin its like 26 degrees... jeez guys i was just looking at the individual core temps off of hw monitor no need to try and blow me over on some sarcasm!

Theres your proof, sorry if i misread it lol i guess it does matter if the individual cores are 10 degrees cooler than whole chip. Or i guess it could just be my motherboard sensor is wrong? i don't really know too much about that though, so jingle fire away!

Haha. I've got no idea why there's more and more usernames appearing that have to do with toast. I've been using this as an online alias throughout a few generations of online games, as well as this forum. So I'm definitely not one to blame.
Anyways, the MoBo was actually supposed to be on sale where I bought it from, but the bastards didn't actually give me the discount. I might go back to the store and complain about it. Thanks for warning me about the Diablotek PSU's too. I'll probably buy a better one now when I go to order some more parts online (for free shipping, etc.)

8C.
Ok he must have his AC blowing on his intake.
Or there is a phase change CPU cooler he isnt telling us about because his Mainboard is reading mid to upper 70's. Which looks normal.
Or his CPU sensor on his motherboard is going. Or HWMonitor is reading the meta data wrong.
Pick one of the three. Ambient temp aint got nothing to do with it.
|
How hard is it to achieve 4.5 on air?
|
|
I'm assuming i5 2500k, if that's the case, it's very easy, a standard hyper 212 plus will pretty easily bring you to 4.5 with small if not no voltage changes.
|
O yes of course, lets say a 2500k.

Tbh it is a shitty foxconn mobo and it reads volts stupidly wrong, saying i think like stupid amounts that should have my pc pooping and shorting out whenever its even on, but it seems to do me good, the overall cpu temps seem legit because when i stream and get like 64 degrees celc before it will start bugging out and crashing etc. but no blue screens. Overall my foxconn motherboard seems to do me good in heavy performing tasks so replacing it for reading sensors wrong is kinda unnecessary get my drift? :D

You're suggesting a cooling setup based off of the data, it seems entirely fucking reasonable to expect your temps to not defy the laws of physics.
Regardless of what we do or don't already know about the case and cooler, you shouldn't suggest it based off of clearly incorrect information.

Yeah I dont see how thats reasonable. 11C with 111 watts running through it.
