I can cut ~100 dollars and you'll still have 85% the performance.
All you do is cut out the:
Coolermaster Hyper 212+ i5-3570k & BIOSTAR TZ77B & Corsair Vengeance 8GB combo Rosewill Capstone 450w 80+ GOLD
AND put these in instead:
Corsair CX500 500w 80+ PSU $59.99 (49.99AMIR) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027
i5-3450 & BIOSTAR TZ77B & Corsair Vengeance 8GB combo $319.97 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.942850
With a 3450 and a Z77 board you can OC the CPU albeit limited. From what I've read your able to OC to 3.5Ghz after playing around with settings.

His budget was $600 but he could add a little bit more up to $700 if needed but thanks!

Hullo! Looking to build for the first time, no experience, but with my research I've come to these parts. Intend to use only for gaming (SC2, D3, Dota2), with the hope it'll last a good 3-5 years. Upgrading from an '08 Macbook Pro for college that runs SC2 at 20 fps on the lowest settings. -_-
Case - $59.99: COOLER MASTER HAF 912 RC-912-KKN1 Black SECC/ ABS Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
CPU - $239.99: Intel Core i5 3570K Processor 3.4
Not overclocking off the bat, maybe at most to 4.0 GHz?
GPU: Considering Nvidia 570 or just shelling out for 670? Will 570 last until 700-800 series? The 670 that much of a step up? Sucks the 660ti isn't/won't be out until Q3 (according to rumors on tom's hardware).
HDD - $120: already have a MB Pro for music, etc. Thinking Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD1 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC 7mm Internal Solid State Drive However, was reading that SSD's wear down due to rewrite fragmentation? Is that a concern with using it as a bootup/gaming drive?
PSU - $79.99: Corsair Enthusiast Series 650-Watt Was reading that on here that most won't need above 500 Watts, but this 650 is cheaper on amazon than Corsair's 550w. Also read it had good components (Japanese transistors, fans) and was pretty quiet.
CPU Cooler: Is it worth getting the Corsair H60? My room won't be getting AC during the summer (I won't be overclocking at first), so room air could be 90 F (32-35 C). Would something like the H60 be more advantageous than a typical COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 or even a huge Noctua 6 Dual Heatpipe with 140mm/120mm?
RAM - $47: Kingston Technology HyperX 8 GB (2x4 GB Modules) 1600 MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800) 240-Pin SDRAM
-- gotta support EG.
Motherboard - $139.99: ASUS P8Z77-V LX Intel Z77 ATX DDR3 2400 LGA 1155
Sort of confused by the narrative on this thread about quality/cheaper motherboards. I'm a total noob to building, but it seems as though the general idea is that a quality card/GPU should be matched by a quality motherboard?
Optical drive: something cheap.
Sound card: Is it worth getting a sound card or is the above motherboard probably sufficient?
Any recommendations for a good keyboard at around $50?
Thanks for your time!

Rounding. DDR3-1333 has a peak bandwidth of 10666mhz which is almost always rounded down by manufacturers to 10600mhz.

You didn't include a DVD Burner. P67 would require a BIOS flash to be compatible with a 3rd gen i5.

The rest of the parts are from your list. Processor : Intel Core i5-3450 Box, LGA1155 171,91 €* Graphic Card : Powercolor HD6850 1024MB Dual-DVI/HD1M2I5 112,74 €* RAM : 8GB-Kit Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1333 CL9 39,73 €* (1)
Total: 541.92€
I'm 95% sure a B75 Mobo Supports Overclocking so you will be able to make the i5-3450 run at 3.5Ghz.

Hey guys, my friend is looking to build a new rig. I'm not really an expert or anything although I've built a rig of my own in the past.
Here's a description of what he's looking for, basically a standard gaming rig. + Show Spoiler +What is your budget? $1200
What is your resolution? 1920x1200
What are you using it for? Gaming mostly, such as Diablo 3.
What is your upgrade cycle? Longer cycle, 2+ years.
When do you plan on building it? Relatively soon, over the summer.
Do you plan on overclocking? No overclocking
Do you need an Operating System? Don't need an OS.
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Single GPU - looking for close to top-end.
Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg!
I spent a few minutes on Newgg and put together some of the best sellers. What do you guys think - any suggestions? + Show Spoiler +
Appreciate any pointers/advice, now I'm back to playing Diablo 3!

I've always wondered why most big sites like anandtech use some kind of wattmeter measured from wall to determine GPU load... Why not something more accurate like how hardware.fr measure it? Who cares how much effiency the test rig is and what CPU they use... can't compare anything like that.

It's lack of expertise and effort I think, which is pretty pathetic considering the size and relative prestige of the larger sites. Measuring the draw from the connectors is not trivial.
With an i5-3450 you could easily run three HD 7950s, not just two. Those are PowerTune capped at 200W each.
