That's kind of a high price for a Pure Power L8. Just get a Super Flower Amazon instead, or step up to a Pure Power E9 for the upgraded fan and efficiency, if you really want a quiet power supply.

well im willing to invest up to 130€. case should hold the next full new build in a few years too so if its worth to spend that extra bit im willing to do that. i just honestly have zero clue of modern cases so i just took some suggestions and read some reviews that brought me to that list.

Well, you could get an antec 300 or fractal design core 3000 for 50-60€ and they'd still be more than fine for housing several builds. If you want something more expensive then I can definitely recommend Fractal Design R3 or the bit more expensive P183. I'm not so experienced with NZXT Phantom, so I won't say anything about it, but I think there are better choices than the coolermaster 690 ii.

In terms of pricing for silent computing cases, it basically goes Fractal Design Define R3 > P280 > Corsair 550D. Note that I don't care about NZXT.

P183 is likely to be more expensive than the P280 and arguably worse / on par with it.

Pure power e9 doesn't excist. Its Straight power E9. In general however, the Superflower Golden green is roughly the same price and quite a bit better.

Superflower Amazon is allso a decent psu, but quality/performance/efficiency wise a step back.

If you want something decent with high efficiency you could allso go for the Be quiet Efficient Power F1.

i know i could keep using "lesser" cases too, there is like the 4th or 5th build in my current case.
but since there is room in the budget and more money into the other parts dont change much ( 60€ more to a 3570k doesnt seem worth it, a 560 448 should be plenty for 1680x1050 till next year) i rather spend it on the part that lasts the longest time ~~

yeah its like 90 -> 105 -> ~125€ on those 3. well placed prices i guess ~~

In terms of performance for silent computers, I believe it goes

Fractal R3 > Antec P183 > Antec P280 == Corsair 550D == NZXT H2 >> Fractal XL

This is based off of sound and cooling, and is probably a bit biased. Consider that the performances change for the R3 depending on whether you use the ModuVents, for the H2 depending on if you mod the front grill, the number, position and quality of the fans used, etc.

iirc, most reviews said the XL was a disappointment so to put it in the same class as a 550D or P280 is.... questionable.

I hate the aesthetics of NZXT cases and they're not a manufacturer I'd consider to be on the same tier as Silverstone or Corsair.

well if the socket is the main concern in futureproofing and it's dead by next year, then does that mean there's really no way to futureproof in general?

Well that's what people are talking about when they say futureproof right? PCI-E 2.0 isn't going to get saturated anytime soon with single card configurations so what else is there?

Hey guys, so I'm just finishing university this year and as a grad present the parents are offering a new CPU to me. I play games constantly but am stuck using a laptop . I play SCII, DOTA2, FPS games, and plan on running D3. I am looking for a machine that can handle video games on their highest setting as well as streaming content online. I do not update my machines until about 3-4 years so I am looking for a good build that will last. I know nothing of builds so anything will be greatly appreciated. I live in Ottawa, Ontario and my budget is $1,250.

You mean an entire computer right? The CPU is only one part of the computer.

Yeah, I mean an entire computer.

Yeah whoops @ Be Quiet! power supply names. Argh, I don't care what kind of _____ Power it is. The letter (L, E, F, etc.), number, and wattage are sufficient to uniquely identify the model in question. Straight Power E9 400W should be good. Super Flower Golden Green is better in terms of electronics, but the E9 has a better fan, a 135mm SilentWings FDB model. I think at that price Golden Green is more expensive too. Efficient Power F1 has a downgraded fan compared to E9, so not worth it at 1 euro savings.

only super flower golden green in the shop is the 550w one for 75€ so thats out of question anyways.the e9 400w it is then, thanks ;>

about the case guess there is no real conclusion. last question then, what case would you guys pick in that price region?not limited to my list , just your overall pick with that budget.

Define R3 unless you really need tank build quality. You can get an extra fan for positive pressure and/or better GPU cooling by spending a little bit of the price differential, if desired. 550D performance is not better, and it's larger.

My considerations were only cooling and noise, rather than in general which is a bad idea in hindsight. But I agree it's a pretty poor case overall. I'll amend the post.

Hi there, first time poster in this section of the forum really, so I am a complete noob when it comes to building a computer. I figured that for the end of the school year, I will celebrate by building myself a much-needed new computer for the very first time.

What is your budget?

I would like to spend somewhere between $1000-$1500 (or less obviously) on it. This is pretty flexible, and if need be I can go up to max $2000.

What is your resolution?

Currently using a 1920x1080 resolution.

What are you using it for?

I will be using it for Starcraft 2 and streaming, almost exclusively. I only want to be able to play sc2 on low-medium settings, but with my current computer I have trouble with fps drops in large battles even on all the lowest settings. I hope to build a new one where this won't be an issue.

What is your upgrade cycle?

I don't want/plan to upgrade it often at all. Maybe every few years if needed? I'm not really too sure how to answer this question, but let's assume the only thing I'll be using it for is, as previously mentioned, sc2 and streaming.

When do you plan on building it?

Within the next couple of weeks.

Do you plan on overclocking?

Nope!

Do you need an Operating System?

Yes I will need one.

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

I don't think I will need one for my purposes, so I will say no. But if someone corrects me and I do need a second GPU for my purposes, then yes!

Where are you buying your parts from?

I live in Canada, so probably Newegg unless there's somewhere cheaper.

Thanks so much for the help! like i said, i'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff so any constructive help is needed and i would love to answer any questions or anything else you need to know.

Overclocking will be very beneficial for a configuration that's sole purpose is for Starcraft II and streaming.

Newegg sucks so you don't want to buy from them... it amazes me why Newegg is so popular in Canada when there wasn't even a Newegg Canada until like 2009 and they're not even good.

You won't be spending anywhere 2k though unless you spend needlessly. You'll want to ask again when you have a more definite build date since Canadian retailers allow for pricematching and there are weekly sales.

Okay thank you, so where would you recommend I buy from? and I will be buying the parts at the end of april or very beginning of may.

Just received news that I will be able to buy the parts anytime after this saturday (preferrably as soon as possible)
. Thanks again

I've put together this rig to play Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, HoN, Dota 2 and possibly newer games that haven't come out yet @ 1920x1080. I dont plan on upgrading for 3-5 years and I'm going to do a light OC on the CPU. So here are the parts...

Intel Core i5 3570k
ASRock Z77 Pro 3
XFX Radeon HD6870
Coolermaster Hyper 212+ heatsink
Cruicial M4 64GB SSD (boot drive)
WD Caviar Black 1TB (storage drive)
Corsair CMPSU600CXV2 600W
Corsair Vengeance 16GB DDR3-1600
Asus DRW-24B1ST DVD drive
Antec One Case

If there's anything that should change just link to it. Also, I posted this on another forum and got suggestions to drop the RAM down to 8GBs and get a HD7850 instead of the HD6870; thoughts?

So will you be overclocking or not?

NCIX's new sale will be up tomorrow evening so I'll recommend when that time comes.

Asrock sucks in Canada. MSI Z77A G43 or G45 are both better and less expensive.

Caviar Black is not a storage drive, Caviar Blacks are 7200 RPM HDDs that are meant for primary or secondary drives and the only major difference between it and a Caviar Blue is the warranty length (Caviar Black has five while Blue has two). Caviar Greens are for storage.

CX600v2 is a bad choice. It's more power than necessary and it's of a lower quality than other units available at the same price.

16gb of memory is extreme overkill for just gaming lol. Why waste $40 on memory for a gaming configuration when you don't even have a 128gb SSD?

A 7850 is about $80 more expensive than a 6870 but the games you mentioned are all jokes on graphical requirements so the choice is up to you. But you can easily afford to step up to a 7850 though.

I'll assume you have pricing figured out.

If there's anything that should change just link to it. Also, I posted this on another forum and got suggestions to drop the RAM down to 8GBs and get a HD7850 instead of the HD6870; thoughts?

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll drop the RAM to 8GBs. Also, two more questions: Can you suggest any appropriate power supplies? If you were me, would you upgrade to the 7850 knowing that the rig should last 3-5 years?
