I recently bought SteelSeries 5H only 2-3 months ago, the wires have already gone dodgy on me :/

can anyone recommend a real cheap option headset but still decent quality?

BTW i had siberia before 5h. problem with Siberia is its only headphones it comes with some cheap clip microphone not build in one

The Siberia v2's have a built in microphone.

Still the most comfy headset I've ever owned.
I enjoy watching more than playing.

I've gone through my share of cheap headsets ($30-$40) and these are the best ones I've found in that price range. My roommate and I have been using this one for almost a year now with no problems. Sound quality is good (mic and headphones), although I'm no audiophile. Big ear cups makes it comfortable, doesn't make your ears sore after a long gaming session. Very sturdy mic as well.

Ditto. I've been very impressed with these headphones and have been using mine for over a year. The only issues I've ever really gotten are sometimes after sleeping mode I can only hear out of one ear, but that is easily fixed with a system reboot.

Coming from someone who's spent around $500 on headsets in the last 5 years; I'm amazed to say that my Turtle Beach X1 (originally for my Xbox 360) are my favorite. Comfortable, adjustable, and loud as hell. My only problem with them is that they get a little greasy. but then again, most headsets do.

costs $60 which is way cheaper than most of the crap you will find on razer or steelseries.

This is basically the same as my headset but their fancy renamed version to keep people interested:

You manage to break 2 mics of the Fatality Headset in a couple of month's time? My cousin had his Fatality Headset for over about, 2 years? And they are still in great condition, and he uses them every single day.

I've had my Icemat Siberia for like 4 years now or so and I also have the neckband cause but I never wear those cause my regular icemats are good enough. As soon as they break on me though, I'll probably end up getting v2's because they are a quality brand.

I also wore the Megalodon or w/e they are called at a local cyber cafe here and they fit awkwardly, They don't fit on my irregular sized head to well.

Don't get anything with one of those little controls in the middle of the cord you can adjust the volume with. The wires in there always get fucked up, had three brick headsets for that reason in the last year and a half.

Gaming brand headsets are probably not the best idea lol. Sennheiser and Audio-Technica are solid.

Some logitechs are horrible but the G35 might be better. Plantronics are possibly worth considering.

HD555 and Audio-Technida AD700s are two of the most recommended models. Go with the HD if you like a tigher/more secure fit. The ATs are very comfortable but due to the wingtip design don't really clamp down on your head. I don't mean to use clamp in a negative way, the HDs are very comfortable, it's just preference.

I find the AD700s to be extremely comfortable, as it doesn't clamp down on your head, and is an open style so it doesn't get hot.

the selling point of the megalodon is the 7.1 surround sound simulation, but a good pair of stereo headphones is more then enough to detect directional sound

i say go with a quality stereo headphones rather then the megalodon

I'm currently using the Steelseries 5Hv2, and while they are great for CS, I find them very lackluster for any application that isn't gaming related (music, movies etc) because of the bad low ends (nonexisting bass, lol).

So what I'm looking for is basically a headset that is gonna work good for gaming (consider that I'm mostly going to be playing RTSs) while also being great for music and movies. They also have to be closed around the ears, because I like keeping noise out.

I've heard alot of good stuff about the Sennheiser PC350; would this be a good choice considering what I'd use them for?

EDIT: I'm looking at the PC-360 now since it resently came out, would that perhaps be an even better purchase?

I recommend against SteelSeries 5H v2. They were really comfy, I loved the way the mic works, but after not-too-long they simply stopped working, or with some fiddling with the cable/jack (broken wire?) I could get one side to work.

I really liked my Everglide headset despite it being absolutely massive. Comfy, mic is separate from headset though. That was until I stepped on it getting out of bed. Still works just fine, but now resides with my piano.

Gaming headphones are cheap and stupid. If I were you I'd look for something standard in business (like whatever tech support people have to use), since you want reliability.

Just look at the names of the brands of gamer headphones, and tell me you don't believe half their research budget didn't just go into finding something that will appeal to 16 year old counter-strike players.

Expect to pay a lot of bones if you go with Sennheiser. They're quality and they're durable, but you're paying for the trusted brand name too. You should be able to find what you're looking for with a less famous company and still get good quality.

Edit: I hate when I post in a thread that is like, a month old.

Steggy did an awesome roundup of some of the best headsets for gaming:
http://www.overclock.net/sound-cards-computer-audio/601982-astro-a40-vs-sennheiser-pc-350-a.html

Over here is NTD Grenade's Writeup, which compares many of the same headsets.

I personally am looking for the Turtle Beach HPX with Astro MixAmp(HPX are sold as HPA2. They are the same thing, but HPA2 comes with more things in the box.

But is Megalodon a good buy for a guy who mostly plays on a mac? And generally, is it a good buy? I will buy Razer Mamba and probably Megalodon soon :D

After using each of the following gaming headsets for several months, across multiple games and platforms: Logitech G35, Razer Megalodon, Steelseries Siberia v2, Astro A40s, Tritton AX

I would go with the Astro A40s by far. The only downside is 5.1 instead of 7.1 surround sound. They feel nice, have the perfect amount of blocking noise (hear friends next to you, but not someone making a sandwich in the kitchen). They have the best sound quality by far (toslink cable). Very comfortable (in my opinion more than the Siberias)and no software needed aswell (can use at LANs).

Considering it has been ~3 years since they came out, and the pricey 250$, I would wait for Astro to come out with new ones, but if you want the best and soon, go with the A40s.

Might be just me but I've owned like 6 pairs of logitech headsets and they all broke on me, I have bad luck with logitech headsets, though I love their mice. I got a cheap one off newegg and it lasted me the whole year without breaking and the bass is nice.
