I am really tired of having my headsets and mics break all the bloody time.

Other then getting dropped or having the cord tugged on occasion I don't do anything weird to them but they last a few months and then I have to replace them; it's expensive and tiresome.

So, I ordered a Steelseries Siberia v2 online a little ways back, thinking I'd get an expensive, popular headset and stop having to worry about it. I was initially pleased but it has also broken now, first the mic went out then a few months later one of the earpads.

SO, I am looking AGAIN to buy a need headset.

- Something in the <$200 pricerange, around $100 would be nice.

-I am not an audiophile, I want something that works well with games/music, has good bass etc but the finer points of awesome are lost on me and I don't care that much about the best possible sound quality as long as its decent.
-DURABLE. I am bloody SICK of having to replace these stupid things all the time. The rest of my peripherals/computer lasts for years, I want headsets that do so as well.
-Has a GOOD MIC. I use my headset for voice chat constantly, I am not using a stand mic or something else, I want a on-headset mic that wont break from normal/slightly rough use and picks up sound well and not background sound and such.
-comfortable, closed OVER-EAR (something about my ear shape means I can't wear earbuds) style. One thing I'll say about the siberia v2 was that it was certinally very comfortable.
-Doesn't cost a fortune to ship to Canada (include in pricerange considerations).

I have looked at a bunch of resources but I have found them to be difficult to get a useful recommendation out of that has everything I need.

I'd suggest the Razer Carcharias. Can be ordered from Canada Computers or NCIX for $80; depending on where you live, you can pick them up or have respectable shipping charge added.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Why do you suggest these? Personal experience?

I would greatly appreciate it if you could elaborate a bit as I wish to make an informed purchase. One question I have is why should I believe these will be any more durable then the siberia v2 I have.

I've owned a lot of headsets in my day, notably with Audio .90s, .110s, Sennheiser PC150s, Steelseries 5Hv2, Siberias, and quite a few others.

Right now, I'm using the Razer Carcharias and am quite satisfied with them. I'm not an audiophile, so music and movie playback isn't the death of the headset. But positional sound, headset size and comfort is top notch compared to what I've owned and used. The mic is very solid on this headset and like most, will cancel out noise.

They've also been more durable than all the headsets I've owned, save for maybe the Sennheisers, but that's anecdotal like the rest of this, because I've had friends who have had theirs crap out on them. I have also owned cats since I was little, and them knocking my headphones off my desk or tower, or yanking the cord is common, and I've had the Carcharias since they came out (which was early 2009 if I remember correctly), and they're still going strong.

I have the AD700 (open) and my ears get really hot during gaming. I'm about to sell them just so I can afford new headphones. Need recommendations. Mic is a plus but don't care. Also I despise skinny headphones.

Steelseries, Razer, Logitech.

All terrible headset brands that aren't any good. You'd be much better getting a good pair of headphones and then a separate mic.

The only reason pros wear Steelseries and Razer are because they're sponsored by them most of the time or they just don't care about quality (For SC2 it's probably more important that they're comfy).

Sennheiser, Astros and a few other good brands are what you should get. Get what you pay for.

It's not amazing sound quality but it's definitely more solid than most gaming headets, it's what Khaldor uses at home to cast the PC360 and this is the cheapest price you're likely to find it at =3.

I think mentioning that Khaldor uses this to cast only scares people away from it, since its microphone starts to make your ears bleed when you get too loud. Not saying its a bad headset though, it gives really good sound and the mic can work as long as you aren't too loud.

My setup:

Xfi Xtreme Gamer ~60 bucks
Sennheiser HD555- Got mine refurbished for 75

I play competitive FPS and gotta say I will NEVER use anything different unless its a newer Xfi Card.
The virtual surround is better than any USB headset ive heard and even movies sound amazing. I totally
recommend this. For about 200 bucks you wont get a better setup. Plus I deployed to Iraq for 8 months
and used these the whole time and they are still working 100 percent and nothing has broken.

Anyone have a good suggestion for headphones for people with glasses? I have had a couple sets(mostly platronics) and all of them are quite uncomfortable with glasses. If I wear them for longer than an hour, the arms of my glasses start to really dig into my head.

I use sennheiser 280s at work, just fine with glasses. Not a headset, no mic, but they're decent closed-ear headphones. The 555s are comparable (probably better) open-ear.

Just get a ****ing desktop mic, they're way better anyways. Headsets (microphones) are crap.

Any good headsets with detachable mics? If not, any good microphones that are clip or maybe stand?

Yall are going to laugh at me, but I use the Creative Tactic Alphas.

There, I said it.

Really cheap ~ $30-$40

Great software. Pretty good sound (Really nice, atmospheric bass)

Detachable mic that is flexible

also, it's really light. People complain it's really cheap feeling. I personally love how it makes it light. NO head fatigue, doesn't clamp. Takes like 2 days to break in, and it feels pretty nice.

edit:

Just wanted to add these 2 cents: A lot of gaming headsets are just brand. You're not going to find many headsets if any at all that have stellar audio quality and/or stellar microphone quality. These brands are just making money off their name. It's best to save and get a cheap headset just for gaming. You want something that has decent sound, maybe some surround sound software, and a working mic. Save your 200 that you would've bought for your astros and razers and get true audiophile headphones for music.

There are a plethora of good desktop mics. If you want something cheap & 'good enough' for just voip/gaming/whatever, this is pretty solid

http://www.adorama.com/LOMPNC.html?gclid=CP2Hu5va0bACFUkaQgodtFbR4w

Lasts for a long ass time, good enough for speaking. If your budget is <$50, go with something like that.

If your budget is higher and your use case requires higher quality sound recording, you're not looking for some random 3.5mm / usb microphone.

Pioneer, known for making audio equipment for decades.

Steelseries, razer, etc.... they make peripherals, so its all marketing, really good marketing = hype.

Of course Pioneer is expensive as they are almost mandatory headphones for DJ's.

Unlike beats audio which is expensive because you're paying for the name, not the actual product.

Since you're on a $100 budget, go buy the "good marketing" products, and be part of their statistics, razer, steelseries etc.

I have a steelseries siberia v2. True as to this thread it isn't the greatest headset for it's value. It isn't noise cancelling (audio or mic). The sound quality isn't the best. It is marketed well. What i do say is that it is very comfy. For my first pair of headphones to me this was decent as in it "satisfies all my current criteria" of comfiness and retrac mic.

Headphones are one of the things you wouldn't want to buy online (along with mouse/mousemat/keyboard). Check out the stats on a few in your price range and then go to a store and try them on. It's worth a few dollars extra.

Surprisingly Corsair Vengeance 1500 haven't even been mentioned yet. I think they're better than steelseries siberia v2 in that price range, but I hear they a bit tight on some people.
