Albeit what gave me a chuckle was how SHIN, like other starcraft 2 players, like to box at random things when browsing the internet :D I am not alone with that OCD thing that sc2 gave me

Like having the first three and four weeks in Korea, while the remaining semifinal and final matches in China, for example. Hence, the costs of bringing Korean players can be mitigated while at the same time maximizing the live viewership from China. Edit: I am okay as long as the basics which are the weekly preparation and the nature of offline tournament should be maintained.

Honestly, I think it would be theoretically okay to just retire the GSL, create EPT Korea, and try to channel that crowdfunding passion toward more grassroots-ish projects like a Korean HomeStory Cup-style event or other things of that nature. The problem, I guess, is that GSL is the only brand that can regularly rally people to cough up $40,000 a season, and that in itself is irreplaceable value in a shrinking scene.

![]() Maybe hints of it ending or maybe rebrand. Either way, they are doing what they normally don't do usually, so it's sus. Regardless, GSL finals in less than 24 hrs, come watch it then. shop link: https://shopfreeca.afreecatv.com/products/120846388

Especially, considering how barren the corporate sponsor scene has been for esports in Korea in the last…. 6-7 years.

I guess there's some lingering loyalty from AfreecaTV, and it certainly helps that the crowdfunding has been successful as well. It’s such an evocative brand within the scene I suppose, some of us have been watching it in various forms for some 14 years I’m unsure whether the ship has sailed but I’d long felt the best course was ESL helping prop it up a bit, rather than some scenario where the GSL just stops and the ESL lot have to step in and replace it as a Korean tournament runner.

Its only barren for sc2, which is not surprising given that viewership is in the low thousands. You reach more people sponsoring a random e girl.

I'm not very knowledgeable but I recall Samsung dropping their team after winning worlds. And taking a glance at the LCK, It doesn't seem as marque as proleague days. Granted, I'm not a Korean and maybe i'm just old-brained and thats a dumb take.

Yeah I was under the impression that it’s quite rough for teams in various titles, with some exceptions. Even in games that have very successful eSports scenes overall. Or that teams might be in OK shape but it’s from publisher/dev subsidy more than outside sponsorship I’m a pretty big noob with wider eSports mind, be interested if someone more knowledgeable could chip in

Samsung pulled out, if I recall correctly, because the Group was going through a rough patch at the time, with the CEO being under investigation and what not. So they cut their sponsoring budget. But if you look through the teams more closely, they are actually prettey hefty sponsored: T1 and KT are known since Proleague, Gen.G is a Joint-Venture between Korea and Silicon Valley (was called "KSV Esport" for a short while), Dplus is name-spnsored by KIA, NongShim is I believe Koreas biggest Food-related company, Kwangdong Freecs are still owned by Afreeca and so on
