D if you consider their competitive history back then, but not their current competitive skills level.

Yayy Creator should be able to win vs 2 Z!
Nice to see Stats back too, he should be able to beat Nightmare and Bunny!
Nice to see DRG and soo back just cus it'd suck if they were gone that long.
Really cool to see 2 foreigners in, and Astrea making it again is impressive.
Too bad Ty didn't make it... Ro16 is so competitive now.

Wow we have 6 protoss in Ro16, awesome!!

Are they still gonna try to push the new patch before this? I guess they would have 2 weeks to practice.
It'd be insane actually to see such a big patch change (especially with the new Cyclone/mech!!).
It'd be insane in a very entertaining and healthy way for the viewership. Exciting times!!
Though it's really sad Ty isn't there, he would have done some Mech for sure!
At least we have Gumiho, and maybe Maru will try it too if it's good!

I'd be pretty shocked if Stats didn't come in last in that group, but if he gets back in shape I'd be thrilled.

This GSL is hype as fuck

(P)Stats, (Z)DRG, (P)Classic, (Z)soO, (P)Astrea and (Z)Scarlett.

If (P)sOs and (T)SpeCial (and (T)INnoVation.... hope he tries to qualify another time) it would pretty much be perfect

I'm a little sad. It's almost impossible for groups of death to happen now, especially with just 16 players. Excited nonetheless though!

If Stats has been putting in the hours for a few months I think he is gonna surprise everyone, his ability to understand and read the game is unmatched imo, that's why he always gets stronger the longer we stay on 1 patch. But with the state of Protoss I don't really know

Did Ragnarok fail to qualify again? I loved his play style when he reached the finals last year. Other than that, I'm happy that my favorite tournament still happens in 2023.

Ragnarok (or Shin) has not been consistent in those Bo3 qualifier. And the new promo for GSL this season is pretty much Maru Terran vs GSL.

Damn, i didn't realize sOs played in the qualifiers... would have loved if he made it in, but it's so hard now with only Ro16.
Hope he doesn't give up and makes it in next year!

Also i just realized didn't see Dream this year, did he retire? He doesn't seem to have played in the qualifiers this year

Would love for GSL to go back up to Ro24, but i get that they can't sustain it. Just would feel more exciting having more variety of players and feeling they have a chance to go deep, instead of mostly seeing the same Ro16 players.
So many players that could be included like Ty, sOs, Ragnarok, Ryung, Armani, Keen

Hmm seems like Innovation didn't play though rip

The simple reason why there is no Ro24:
If I haven't misscounted, only 22 players showed up for the qualifier. So this season, if it was Ro24, you would have two BYEs because not even enough players bothered to try it.
...okay, not true, some registered and didn't bother showing up, so I guess these guys would have gotten a free ticket. But you get my point. There are literally not enough players in SK to actually fill a GSL Ro24 and still have it mean something.

Not sure what you counted but looking at the liquipedia page I already see 25 notable participants and looking at the bracket there are quite some more unknown participants, not to mention the top 4 from last season is already seeded

Apparently yes, I did misscount. 26 players did show up for the Round 1 qualifier (one group was complete, the other three had one BYE and one player not showing up each, so I didn't count them).
Combine that with the 4 players that were already qualified and you come to 30 players. So in the so-called hardest league, in a Ro24 format, only six players would not qualify. At that point just skip the qualifier and make it a Ro32 tournament.

IMO though it's ok because even earlier in SC2, the skill difference between those that qualified to GSL vs those who actually got far was immensely different. The players in Ro64 or Ro32 didn't stand a chance to those getting to Ro4s.

Ro16 is super competitive now, I feel that players in the Ro24 especially Ty/Ragnarok/sOs would have a good shot at getting to Ro8-Ro4, and even players like Percival gave Rogue a very difficult match, and players like Spear even beat regular GSL players like Special. It just feels boring to me seeing the upper cut of players fight each other all the time, to me having those newer underdogs was a huge part of what made GSL seasons so exciting.

The meta feels more stagnant when 16 players only have to prepare for those 16, vs having to account for newer players with newer approaches and unfamiliar playstyles and strategies.

I think one of the reason for the reduced format is because of the prize pool. GSL used to have very generous prize for those who made it to Ro 24/32, and they simply cant afford it with the current prize pool (not counting the donation from fans). An extra 8 players making it to GSL would require about 4k additional prize (assume 500$/person) and thats maybe too much, sadly. Which bring up the point, why GSL never announce the actual prize pool, with all the money added and how they are distributed, officially.
