With the conclusion of HomeStory Cup XXII, we have a near-final lits of players who are qualified to compete at IEM Katowice 2023. Still, there may be cancellations or invite declines before the tournament (due to visa issues etc), so ESL have not yet made an official post regarding the Katowice players.

For now, Liquipedia calculations give us the following rosters:

Round of 24 (group stage)

Round of 36 (play-in)

We'll see what's up with the Chinese/Meo visa situation + if Cure is allowed to leave Korea in 2023.
I'm also a bit curious to see if all the Korean decide to go, I feel like I've barely seen Armani, Ryung and Classic play in the last few months.

the only open "issues" (afaik) atm are:
- MaxPax playing
- Cure able to travel
- Zoun in military

Meomaika will probably miss IEM because they cant process his visa on time, probably mean TeeBul got the spot now. So sad to hear Meomaika got screwed over by it times after times.

While I'm afraid we will have to endure a ZvZ finals, I am willing to take this sacrifice if Maxpax appears on LAN.

Anyway, have my tickets already and can't wait to whine about zerg in person!

Protoss capable of winning: herO and herO

Zergs capable of winning? Dark Solar Reynor Serral

Terran: Cure Clem Maru

but protoss gets the biggest nerfs to their key units and overall patch losers, not to mention the maps being zerg favored. h'okay buddy.

When it was last time when Clem and Cure looked like actual candidates to win Katowice?
(never... the answer is "never")

Also why Cure and Clem but not Byun and Bunny who got quite a bit more success recently?
When it was last time Cure consistently looked stronger that Byun or Bunny?

If you include players like Cure and Clem then you also have to include Zoun and MaxPax.
Yes, MaxPax won't participate, but it's not because P is weak.

I agree that patch is Z-favored, maps are Z-favored, and if patch goes through - Zerg will win Katowice with 95% chance.
But list of good enough T and P doesn't make much sense.

cuz maxpax is not going, and he has not shown offline performance so there is no guarantee he would even do well, especially if its because of insecurities his nerves could be a real factor. and does anyone really think Zoun is going to win?

as for why not include byun and bunny? Maybe they could but just my personal opinion Clem or Cure would be more likely. I could see others disagreeing, particularly with ByuN who I would put a little higher than bunny atm

So I'd say the actual "probable contenders" list looks like
Z - Serral, Reynor, Dark
P - herO
T - Maru

I think my point is, in terms of likelyness cure or clem are a lot more likely to win than Zoun. Clem won DH EU beating reynor just a few months ago. Cure also got 2nd place and carried his team in team league and dont forget at start of last year he also got 2nd place in last chance tournament. Byun best result is 3rd place 2022.

Last Chance was 1 year ago though. Since then Byun got better and Cure got worse.
Right now I'd say Byun has a significantly higher chance than Cure.
Btw Zoun has won against Serral not so long ago so he's not a pushover.

Also unfortunately Clem winning anything in EU never meant much outside for global tourneys...
He can "farm" wins against Serral and Reynor but was never able to beat top koreans outside of a few very rare occasions.
Heromarine got 4th place at last Katowice while Clem was... 12th?

i think if you can beat serral and reynor consistently, who are global contenders, you are a global contender yourself. Maybe he has a bad winrate vs koreans but a good bracket could easily fix that. I think byun is definitely good. his homestory cup run was impressive but overall cure had a better year than byun imo

But Byun is #11 in global standings, with 1,891 points.
And Cure is not even in top 20 with his 1102 points, so he will have to go through Round of 36.
So Byun definitely and measurably had a better year than Cure, no?
How someone can be a contender if they are not even in top-20?

Cure has a record of 0W-3L vs Serral with 0-5 map score and 1W-3L vs Reynor with 2-9 map score.

Not sure you can call that consistently beating them if you look at last years results.

They were talking about Clem, I think.
I mentioned Clem never winning anything outside of EU because he can win vs Serral/Reynor but not other top players, and I thought this was CicadaSC's answer to my words. But I might be wrong, of course.

I think Clem definitely has the skill to be a global contender, but until he delivers in an offline, global tournament I'm going to continue to doubt him. He'd need a dream bracket to win, and that's assuming that he can translate his online record against Reynor/Serral into an offline setting. Clem is heavily disadvantaged against Dark, Bunny, and Maru, and I think he'll have a hard time against herO, Serral, Reynor, Byun and Cure too.

Bunny is the real non-Maru Terran hope. While I doubt he can beat multiple top Zerg back to back, he's good enough to beat one, and his other MUs are really good too. I don't have much faith that Bunny can win, but if a Terran not named Maru goes deep my money's on Bunny.

In term of Terran hope out side of Maru, I would put Byun > Bunny > Clem > HM > Cure > Gumiho. Clem just hasnt done well enough in global tournament this year, or even the year before. Bunny and Byun can get on a hot streak like HM did last year

Its funny that Teebul is ahead of Probe by 6pts, and those 6pts was coming from being invited (not qualified) into HSC 21 as one of the replacement. Everything are done legit per the rule book, but its funny to see such implication coming from such small detail in tournament.

Imo Clem is good , but not as an contender , he really has issues in TvT vs korean Terrans so its alsmost a loss vs Maru ,
Byun , Bunny , Cure , Gumiho and sooner or later he will find them in his way .
Reynor atm seems to not practise and losses left and right but if he comes at form can win it , Serral , Maru , Dark , Hero are obvious contenders and after those ill put Byun , Bunny if he practises hard , Maxpax if he comes and Clem .
