Edit: the data was bugged, and has since been fixed, but the point remains that yesterday had the most SC2 games of the post-LOTV era of SC2
According to rankedftw.com, the API reported 316,000 games played yesterday. If this is accurate, that would be 7% more players than the previous peak of 295,000 games played in last June.
Despite Blizzard all but abandoning SC2, the game seems to be going strong. And just a tiny bit of attention from Blizzard has brought tons of players back.

probably the new maps sparking interest. i myself played 60 ladder games yesterday cuz of the maps

Probably a bug due to the new patch/maps (maybe some hot test with bots while the ladder is up?), no one knew there were new map two days ago and yesterday was a week day, I would be very surprise if there was 250 000 persons just waiting to jump in the second there's an update. But hey, I'm ready to be proven wrong

I've actually randomly started laddering again after a good 2 year break and am not surprised to say that I'm enjoying myself immensely, the new maps are pretty fun too. SC2 is such a great game, Activision made a mistake abandoning it so hastily.

For me, like in bw we are at peak SC right now. All the people who ACTUALLY play, play! We have got rid of most of the people that were turning people away from the game, you know the 99th time you just got cheesed/allined/b2gm sorts of players. I cant count on one hand how many times i was super cheesed rushed all last month, compared to this time last year . . .even i stopped playing . . .and believe me, im sc till i die (blizzard you better not fuck this up anymore than you already are, sell the ip to frostgiant, or do something). This is how it feels for me, its like getting on the ranking system of BW, there are still plenty of games and all the games are pretty much diamond to master level. its challenging and fun. all this stupid talk about mental state, ladder anxiety and all the rest have never really sit well with me. People just seemed to serious and 'wanna be pro' with it. now im actually having decent conversations during and after the game about sc2 in general and picking up a few new contacts along the way.
I dont think its getting stronger, i just think we have the base of people in the game right now that need to be there to carry on the strength and meta development we need.

You have a very strange notion of "peak", the game is in a very good state for a 10 years old game that's for sure.

Share em! I don't remember how many games were being played at the time, but I sure as hell contributed a bunch of 2v2 and 3v3s with stupid reaper rushes.

IIRC the population at the end of HotS was 250k 1v1 players world wide, LotV start brought us to 220k, WoL was over a million. Can't tell the number of games, don't remember. Nowadays the population of 1v1 of the world is 63k. Like if I compare WoL times and nowadays, I can wait over a minute for a pop. I never waited more than 2s in the prime time for a match back then.
Maybe we can ask RFTW to show the whole history? Because unfortunately the grapsh were not saved in the time machine (and the page has data from 2013 IIRC) Like if I didn't spam so much, maybe I would be able to find my old post were I quoted the numbers at the end of HotS, but, well

The population right now (63k) should just be people that played 1 ranked game. So not really accurate to count the playernumbers on the first day of the new season if i am not mistaken?

Keep in mind that the season just started so there's likely to be a lot of folks that haven't done their placements yet so the current population number on RankedFTW is not necessarily accurate. It's already increased another 6000 since you posted, for example. There are likely to be a lot of folks who only play on the weekend too so we'll see a lot of placements done then as well.
According to RankedFTW, at the end of last season (so Monday), there were 275544 ranked teams (which means accounts since it's 1v1) in 1v1.
You can actually break down the numbers by season on RankedFTW (change the x-axis from All to Season Last). They do show that last season was not a great season in terms of total accounts or games played compared to previous seasons but this is likely due to several factors including the initial covid lockdowns massively boosting the season 1 and 2 of 2020 numbers along with last season being the first season in a very long time not to have any new maps.

It doesn't mater that much, since the middle of HotS or sometime like that the number is around 250k +-. WoL was over a million. So the best day ever already was. Which was my point

Wtf you dont know what you are talking about mate sorry. the number you mention is always low at the begining of a season, the more the season last the more players u have, in lotv u have some season at 500k+ players so your point is completely false. ( and sure Wol was probably peak sc2 in term of player population but we dont have the data for this, rankedftw didnt exist back then ).
The stats games per days is a good indicator of activity that's why the author of this post mention it.

And that's why I responded that I don't remember the numbers of the games per day back from 2013 and that it was better in wol no matter what. edit> imma not saying these numbers are final, or w/e. But that population is way lower. Population is actually quite stable for a dying dead game
I know what i;'m talking, stop being aggressive and read what i wrote. It doesn't matter what are the numbers now, WoL was way bigger. There's a reason why Blizzard broaden MMR search at least once, there's a reason why now it takes longer to serch for a game All I'm saying is that if this is the best day ever, then the OP never saw how it looked back in WoL. And maybe even earlier HotS (RFTW was in hots, FYI)
Edit 2> probably should have worded it better though. That's on me.

This is a good thing. Thank you for noticing a good thing.
Happy with the new maps. This is also happy.
