Yeah, basically everyone who got carted off to the middle of nowhere was somehow "altered" or "mutated" in some way, which is why they wanted them off Earth.

Anti-hero? Don't think so.
Most marines are criminals who are forced to undergo re-socialization, according to Vanilla's booklet.

Marine macro from 10 Barracks will never be the same

Not sure where you're getting that.
Er...the original colonists primarily consisted of criminals, dissidents, any kind of social undesirables and essentially anyone who could threaten the power of the government.
While mutants may have fallen into some of these categories the purging of Earth did not target "alterees"

Judging from the current success rate in criminal rehabilitation do you think that even so far in the future techniques could be sufficiently advanced so as to change someone with that kind of criminal record into the proverbial "good guy"?
Most likely the "resocialization" (aka brainwashing) can accomplish just enough to instill some sort of pride in their unit and military accomplishments and comradeship and so forth. (ie enough to allow them to function in the realm of military discipline while preserving the traditionally distasteful traits that might serve them well while facing an enemy)
I think anti-hero is a fairly correct term for this character.

As I understood it, the video of the marine getting his armor is to show you how Terran "train" marines so fast in the barracks: they basically take prisoners, put armor on them, hand them a gun and send them in the middle of the enemy.

Dude, everyone got these stuff straight from the instruction manual of the original starcraft CD. The resocialization was basically relayering someone's memories with other false ones, to get them to work for the confed marine corp.

Now we need to wonder how the UED trains their marine?
obviously much better since they bother to give them medics.

He just looks like a confederate marine. The confederates used mostly re-socialized criminals, or kidnapped civilians, re-socialized them, got them buffed up (they were pretty much brainwashed and their passed lives were forgotten), and sent them off to fight to the death against the zerg. In the Starcraft novel "Speed of Darkness" it says that the marines are put in cryogenic tubes or something inbetween service, and have weekly resocializations. They're basically 'mindless' pwns who only know one thing; how to fight and how to serve the confederacy.
However, his armor is blue, which isn't a colour of the Confederacy. But the fact that he's in orange pants and shackles implies that he is, because only the confederates use criminals. The other rebel factions (ie. Sons of Korhal/Reynor) are 'free' soldiers. The UED also consisted of your average civilian recruit/draft.
Lastly, he has a skull and crossbones on his shoulder. The skull and crossbones is the logo of Omega Squadron, the most ruthless and violent faction of Confederates there is. Formed by only the most savage criminals and most intensely resocialized soldiers. They never made an appearence in Starcraft/BroodWar campaignes. However, their faction colour is black, not blue.

Maybe the whole thing is just another loop hole in Blizzards lore. Ie: the whole lore controversy with Burning Crusade.

Thanks! I'm thinking he's definately part of some new Confederate faction. If we all remember, Edmund Duke and a long with most of Alpha squadron were killed by Karrigan near the end of BroodWar. With duke gone, and the back bone of the Confederate forces destroyed, they'd need something new.
I'm assuming that quite a few years have passed since Broodwar (based on the "Blizzard Artwork" video that shows a ginger/brown haired guy who's greying at the very end; an aging Jim Reynor?) and Tychus is apart of a new faction of Confederates; a faction that has been in the making for the whole time between the end of Brood War until now. Karrigan let all the survivors of the final battle live. Mengsk begins to rebuild his shattered army, and Reynor and Zeratual dissapear; we never hear anything of the Confederates. I think Tychus is the product of a new faction of Terrans that has been in the making for a long time to finally defeat the zerg; maybe this explains how hes 363lbs of muscle? You don't get like that over night. Imagine an entire faction of marines of this physique; sounds like a new weapon to me.
|
But Tychus is not from earth it says he was born on Mar Sara.
