Regardless of the situation, we will still action upon "dead game" comments. As this is a sensitive issue for SC2 fans, please do not come into this thread and talk about SC2 players switching over to BW. This thread is also not about bashing Blizzard, David Kim, or the WCS system.

I wonder how this will affect Blizzcon results. I mean, think of it, of the koreans only Byun is in a team that didn't disband there (TRUE counts as a foreigner, tbh). I was thinking of Dark as a favorite but suddenly I think all those kespa pros might get down because of their teams disbanding and will not be able to perform in top shape.

I guess the chances for a foreigner to take blizzcon have skyrocketed with this.

Well something needed to change, barely anyone's been watching StarCraft this year, including myself and plenty of others who both previously would have and still retain at least some interest in the game. Something's caused a lot of viewer apathy. Maybe we'll end up with a smaller but more balanced scene, I don't know, I'm being optimistic, the pessimistic outlook is too bleak right now. I guess the soil is fertile for Broodwar HD in korea at least.

If SC2 was as big as some sports, the WCS system's racist changes would have made HEADLINES.

It really seems like the end of an era. Best we can do is hope for great things in the future.

well, the best moments of this game were without kespa and his proleague, so I guess it's a good change.

besides, I think that the famous kespa regime was like slavery. those kids now are on their own, without studies, or any other skill that grants them a future in their lives. that's why almost all ex-pros now play poker. (there are notable exceptions, like polt, but he was never in a kespa team)

at least, western players go to the college.

I'm gonna say something really deep now... The time of RTS is over... the genre was at it's peak - together with turn-based strategy games like Civilization - in the early 1990s when computers didn't have the processing power to make games like Counter Strike / Doom / Halo possible...

That's better than could be hoped for I guess. Hope there's still GSL / some other form of income to keep enough money in the KR SC2 scene.

What a load of bull. FPS games are still a niche compared to the MOBA goliaths. Conventional RTS has a simple problem, if you make it easy; there's a bad compet scene and the game dies quickly, if its too hard (like sc) people don't get into it except for the niche of gamers (which is fine if you actually care about gameplay but you end up losing to mobas in the who has the biggest viewerbase dick measuring contest). Add in product lifecycles and the fact Blizzard is really the only company in the competitive RTS market and here you have it. Not to mention games are just flat out getting easier over time as more and more people get into games but don't want to put huge time in > facebook games, mobile games, etc; easy games are more profitable and SC2 isnt easy. And yea, however much blame you want to put on Blizzard or not to, the only ship in the RTS fleet hasn't had the best handling, fact.

Yes, they were forced to play the game 20 hr a day, chained, and with no meals but the leftovers of Kespa admins, your ignorance about the subject is big.

All because the game was too complicated. If it catered to noob players then maybe it would have a big enough fan base to support it. Don't get me wrong I really love starcraft, but if you can't get new people to play/new pros to replace the ones who retire then you have to be prepared for the bottom to fall out. Really sad to be honest.

yep this is a pervasive problem with esports. you make a casual yet still competitive game that appeals to a huge amount of people (see: mobas, hearthstone)? great, you've got a good, successful game with a big player base, so now people want to play it competitively... except the pros are still playing a casual game with a comparatively low skill ceiling. some people are ok with this, but i just can't get into these pro scenes, not after i've seen what pro starcraft players are capable of.

the "hardcore" games with a higher skill cap that allow for extremely high level competitive play (see: rts, arena fps, etc)? well they're hard as shit, nobody wants to play them, so there's no player base and no investment into the pro scene, even though they might make for objectively "better" esports.

brood war solved this problem with the UMS mode, where the casuals were literally playing a completely different game than the pros. but imo even if sc2 hadn't fucked up the custom game section at the beginning, the desire for these types of minigames just isn't as high as it used to.

Out of curiosity, how did SC2 fuck up the custom game section at the start? I didn't play very many of them since the social aspects of SC2 were sorely lacking at first. Things like clan support and chat rooms were what motivated me to play customs with friends in WC3/TFT.

I stopped watching after TaeJa retired. So I didn't have a vested interest in PL or any of the other Korean tournaments. But now the chances of seeing Koreans in foreign tournaments have dropped considerably. WCS will change the region lock or someone else will need to step in to keep the scene going. Not looking pretty.

So this is the wall, this is the line , this is the event in sc2 that makes it real. The signs were there, everywhere quietly shouting in our faces.
On twitch the game in the twitch directory went from top row to wherever it is now. I checked 2997. Never mind that twitch owes it's existence in part to sc2... Only recently I noticed cs.go live events showing up in the sidebar. I noticed streamers I liked playing other games more and more.
What Wil happen to the ecosystem sc2 created by being an awesome game...

I hope Dennis/Take tv will diversify also I know hoping that homestory would go on forever was to much but still. I want fuzic.nl to diversify also, to LoL Dota CSGO and more. I go there to see the decline of sc2 in a graph, lately I go a bit more. Totalbiscuit wil be just fine if he just beats that small pesky illness. My favorite steamers getting less and less viewers/support. Winter , I like him even through his controversy, especially than. Wil Tempo release another song, his viewers sometimes in the double digits. Would carbot YouTube or mod even exist. The legacy of what starcraft would leave behind is more than I know or can think of.
Offline events are having trouble to fill a room. Pro's retire, players leave the game completely

Overall there is a decline. I know there is a natural decline, you can't force players to not play or buy or be interested in other games but starcraft seemed immune.

I don't play so the balance whine, the this is wrong that is wrong, the overall negativity doesn't get me at all. I still like the game.
Will there be enough 'passion' left to keep the game going, we will see. And by passion I mean secondary money, commpanies seeing that there is an viewer/player base that could be interested in them. Players/teams that can support themselves. Casual players need the pro side and vice versa. It reinforces each other, today some of that strength is taken away.

The issue was that you had to commit to a session. You pick the players and start the game. In BW you'd make private chats and you'd tell them the name/pass and people would jump in whenever they'd feel like it. It was more casual (as in easy going and relaxed) and less precise.

In sc2 someone makes the game and then invites the player, it isn't some open thing where you can go to the chat and say "made ____ passord is _____ come get some" and just make it. in SC2 you have to converse with strangers, make a friend, start a game, then invite him. too much commitment.

proleague died to me when they stopped playing BW, so I thought this might feel better (selfish "vindication" or whatever) but it doesn't: it's still the end of an era. Best of luck to all the SC2 fans for seeing continued good competition, somewhere.
