HOW TO PLAY

Open Starcraft II and log into Battle.net. If you do not have Starcraft II yet, you can download the Starter Edition for free.

After logging in, navigate to the Arcade by using the menu at the top of the screen. In the search bar on the top right, type "SC Universe". Click on one of the maps and press "Play".

It is highly recommended to play the maps in order.

Over five years ago, myself, a creative developer, and Philipp Meyer, a brilliant programmer, began developing a ‘World of StarCraft’ prototype using the StarCraft II Engine. Neither of us knew of each other’s projects, until one day we discovered one another and joined forces to build a small team, beginning work on what we wanted to be the biggest mod ever made… Not just a mod. A game. A complete transformation of the way StarCraft was played; Something the entire Blizzard community dreamed of for years.

We wanted to combine the third person action RPG elements of World of WarCraft, the combat mechanics of Diablo, and the starship mechanics of FTL with the StarCraft setting. We wanted the game to be completely voice acted with a unique story, custom art assets, and a fresh musical score. We wanted it to open with a breathtaking CG cinematic, inspired by Blizzard Entertainment’s dedication to high production values.

And so our small group set out to do what many said we were crazy to do, what others said we would never finish, and what some said we would completely fail at… But there were those throughout the globe who believed in us, backed us, and bought us the time we needed to deliver on our promises.

Today we announce the Open Beta of StarCraft Universe: Beyond Koprulu, and the full launch slated to release one month from now! We don’t own the intellectual property on StarCraft, so we cannot sell SCU, but we ask those who are able and enjoy what we’ve done, to back us on Indiegogo, a platform endorsed by Blizzard for community developers to receive donations.

To all those who believed in us and helped us along the way, we say thank you. SCU would not have been possible without you. We look forward to seeing you all… in the worlds… of StarCraft.

kinda depressing that all this work cant be done in cooperation with blizzard as a DLC / f2p with cosmetics, netting you a certain income for your work.

Wow, can't believe the development for this game still continued after all this time. This may be the thing that bring people back to sc2! Great work guys!

Random thoughts: Would be cool to have an 8 player mission where your objective is to destroy key structures. You get dropped at a random place and you navigate the map killing every zerg units and tumors in sight. As you progress, you get a little bit of a back story on all your characters and you get to know everyone, what they did before the zerg/protoss invasion, their family background, love interests, what they are going to do after the war, etc. Then, as you beat the final boss, a random infestor pops up out of no where and fungal the entire 8 man team. Everyone then proceeds to get killed off one by one by the surrounding zerg army. It can be like that last scene in Toy Story 3 where all the toys look at each other with the acceptance look. Then at the last moment, the medivac flies by to pick them up and 2 of the 8 marines get away. Would be a cool story.

I must say, that cinematic trailer is the best fan made CG I have ever seen, if I hadn't known better I would have thought this is Blizzard's work.

Man does this thing feel like it has potential or what? This could be exactly what SC needs to get people back into it.

From watching Railgan play it seems like everything takes an eternity to die and the combat doesn't seem to be nice and tight but it's beta so no big deal.

I'm sure once this thing get's smoothed out it's going to be awesome, I mean Dota was just a mod and it spawned LoL Dota2 and HOTS.

The cinematic looks very much like it had Blizzard stamp on it. GREAT potential.

For those who just started playing it, you should make it way more user friendly. Making a starting zone with less details about how to play a character because when you first start to see all those upgrades / things to buy / talents / etc etc, it's overwhelming in the sense of "man there so much to read I don't fucking know where to start" that it makes the player quit.

this site does a great job "deconstructing" games into its components and analyzing them. One component is to gradually introduce the player into the game, slowly increasing complexity in order to always be challenging but never overwhelming. Well worth a read IMO, if you want to improve your game design skills in general:

Im kind of surprised to hear that, because thats exactly what we do with the Prologues.
Prologue 1 teaches the basic game mechanics, Prologue 2 is a first multiplayer raid like experience and Prologue 3 introduces basic ship mechanics to the player.

What specifically felt overwhelming / too fast?

Blizzard recently puts too much pathos into their cinematics, this one feels very good.

I randomly bumped into the cinematic on YT and holy shit! If I still played SC2...

For me, it took me a while to figure out the crafting, enhancing and blueprints. I'm actually still not sure if I understand it well. (playing prologue 2 now)

After finishing 2 parts of prologue so far, I have 1 complaint - the swaying camera in cinematics is a bit tiring. On a ship it made sense but in other situations it seems unnecessary and can make the player dizzy after a while. I think it would be better if it would be moving just horizontally or using zooms.

Other than that it seems pretty fun and running from the swarm was seriously scary haha
