Such a shame, just as he was doing well T_T Apparently the interview says that CJ had told him they "probably wont renew his contract because of not having good results" which I find a little strange considering he seemed to be on the upswing.. Either way, going to spend time with his sick mother is a good reason to retire, I hope he does well in the future!
Dammit I can't find the picture. I meant to blog about it. I was there for the SKT v CJ Proleague Semi this summer. The final night, the CJ bus was delayed through downtown Gangnam, they were all hanging out outside (lol SKT all bounced real quick to go get dinner), so I approached the group of Effort, Hydra, Bbyong (Skyhigh and HerO were elsewhere) standing around. I gave 'em big ups for being OSL and MSL champions respectively, and (alongside a blurry photo, which I can't find) I encouraged them to come to foreign tournaments and events. Remember, they had just been knocked out of Proleague, but this really cheered them up, especially Effort, particularly when I mentioned Blizzcon. I remember reading about him Savior and Skyhigh going to Blizzcon, so he particularly enjoyed being reminded of 2009. Before Mr. Ma's incident, when he was still on top of the OSL, before family sickness and looming military ... it was actually my favorite SC moment of the trip. Apart from meeting Fantasy, lol. But ahead of seeing iloveoov break down with his head in his hands, while his team were celebrating, and proceeding to give (his ex co-)coach Park a big hug. I just need those pics. Bad thing is, last time I had them, I was sorting them all-night on in a Japanese internet cafe, so I may have lost them </3 . Effort is cool guy. Hope he does well + Show Spoiler +
and hope he joins SOSPA, even though he's pretty daym good at SC2
damn, that sucks. he was really coming around to being a top tier zerg. he certainly has legit reasons though, so more power to him. good luck, effort.
I am as sad as I was when he first retired T_T . . . . Best of luck EffOrt, I will never forget that Playoff series against Oz that turned me from being only a BW fan to an CJ Entus follower (-.(-.-(-.-)-.-).-) CJ!!!
One of the all time best. I will never forget him. He was one of the only players who could go toe to toe with flash in his prime. I will never forget when he won the starleague with a huge come back in the finals.
I will miss you effort. I wish you the best in whatever you do. Much love.

Effort, you were a legit BW and SC2 player. You've had plenty incredible games in BW, with that OSL win against Flash as an obvious crowning achievement. But between that amazing ZvZ against DRG back in WCS KR 2012, till the amazing ZvT against Flash/Maru/TY in PL 2014, you've also given us some great games during SC2. I hope you get the most out of your time with your family and get to enjoy your life after SC.
I will always remember being a CJ Entus fan and watching that OSL finals in the airport hanger. I was at a TL meetup at the time and when Flash went up 2-0, everyone else went to sleep (it was 6am) and only I stayed up and witnessed that crazy comeback.
He did not retire because of game or anthing this is one the most understable retirement ever (: "still cant when when ded gaem trolls comes to this (:"
gl in future effOrt and hope ur millitary service will be fast :D
I remember watching his BW games when I first realized there was a scbw competitive scene around 2010. Very good player. Hope the best for you and your mother Effort.

If this is the same game I'm thinking it is, it ... was ... EPIC! A must watch imo. Both Effort and Fantasy outdid themselves with how well they played!
Hope his mother will be allright and that his military service will go well.
I am so glad someone else posted this!! (and that I checked before I did) I remember watching that Heartbreak game live and just being on the edge of my seat the whole game. That was one of the closest and most clutch defiler timings ever, against Flash none the less.
Also, as the most awe inspiring game I have ever seen, this is Effort v Flash on Judgment day. This is just before that OSL finals and everyone was so hyped that we got to see them play before the finals. Watch Effort take the whole map and just go full sauron Zerg. (its too bad we are showing so many Flash losses here, but he was the benchmark for TvZ, and Effort was one of the only zergs that had a chance against him)
I will never forget watching Effort play. Best of luck in everything in the future.
Effort was never one of my personal favorite players, but I have crazy respect for him. Such a monster in the BW days, his play was always inspiring. Sad to see him go, and extra sad that his mother is in poor health.
Best of luck and best wishes to EffOrt and his family. I didn't follow Starcraft till HotS but I can confidently say that he was a true legend, both in BW and even SC2. I will never forget the amount of joy I had seeing him snipe Maru on KSS in the Proleague Season Finals ace match. We'll miss you EffOrt!
Best wishes to him. I hope his mother pulls through, and if she cannot then I hope her passing is peaceful and painless and his mourning process eased by the knowledge that he was a loving and devoted son to the very end.
Wow; Korean Air was what finally started to heal the scars of CJ; after the whole scandal, I remember his coming out of retirement and staying up till 3; watching him play again, oh Effort I'll miss thee, you could've been the next best if you didn't retire in 2010 ._.
Thanks for the amazing games you have entertained us with, you are an amazing Zerg player with astonishing unit control. i hope it goes well for your mother with her battle against illness

Don't know if it's the same for anyone else but I was looking hard for SC2 info - and as a result sorta-accidentally-following-BW-a-bit - around the time Effort took his OSL. So the Jin Air finals between Flash and Effort was my first really hyped BW event, as a result I followed Effort fairly closely as he switched over and was really hoping he'd do well. Will be missed.
Never saw him play SC2 but Effort was a beast in broodwar in 09-10.
I remember a lot of people calling him the next Savior and he certainly was at times in a tier of his own, if not on the Flash/JD level just slightly below, Joined fleetingly by Bisu during his dominant Proleague runs + Show Spoiler +
which coincided with Bisu being elminated early in both MSL and OSL multiples time which was possibly the most frustrating thing I have ever witnessed
Effort was certainly the favorite after Jaedong to defeat Flash who was so dominant at the time.
Of course he beat Flash in The Korean Air OSL and then promptly retired. But he was never the same after that first retirement. + Show Spoiler +
In broodwar no clue about sc2
Anyway seeing his name in the side bar was a blast from the past.
Thanks for the games Effort, thanks for making Flash look mortal if only a little, thanks for that epic zvzvz tie breaker, thanks for the memories.

In some way this EFfort - Flash OSL final resembled Soulkey - INnoVation GSL final - the favorite terran winning machine choked and lost in a series of championship matches only to be reverse killed by an extraordinaire zerg player.

Read the mod note ffs
TBF, the mod note is not really that noticeable imo. It could need a red boarder or something like that (i mean i did read it IN the thread, wouldn't have seen it otherwise ^^)
"He wants to spend as much time as he can with his sick mother before he does military"
This is so beautiful that i don't even care that he retires, what a hero!
GG Effort, glad that you retire with such a good reason to do so hope your mother will get well soon and best of luck in the future. We will miss you Alien <3
what kind of sickness does his mother have exactly? some people here are talking as if shes terminally ill but i have no idea where you guys got that info from

that shes terminally ill is a fairly reasonable assumption based on the phrasing provided which changes nothing if incorrect, as spending time with your ill mother is a great reason to retire from playing computer games whether shes terminal or not

"retire from playing computer games" im not sure you realise how offensive that statement is. to these people its not just "computer games", its their goddamn job. its their life. you wouldnt retire from being an office worker if your mum was just down with the flu, so why would they. now im not saying efforts mother is only down with the flu, because its obviously much more serious. but you need to grow the fk up and show some respect to the people who make a living out of progaming. its not just "computer games"

I don't see the reason why you are getting angry with his comment tbh. It's still a computer game in the end that he's playing as a job so yes, it's essentially a job but unlike jobs that you can work till retirement, even entry level ones, you can only do gaming for x amount of time before you have to retire and move on with life to work another job or get an education etc... I don't believe his comment was meant to be disrespectful though I don't see what's there to disrespect.

yes that was absolutely the point, not to diminish SC2 (why would i do this when im a fan and member of the community?) but to put things in perspective that neither computer games nor cash nor glory will ever compare to the importance of family, friends and hearts
im pretty sure that guy was trolling from his first post though so whatever, best not to continue taking the bait i guess

the fact that he put the emphasis on "computer games" just shows how little he thinks of the profession. whether or not he meant it that way is another story, but that statement is disrespectful. if effort was the ceo of apple he would not be saying "is a great reason to retire from managing one of the biggest company's in the world", but the fact that he pointed out that retiring from computer games should be a no brainer decision just shows a lack of understanding of how important the job is to actual progamers.
if you didnt mean any of this then i apologise, but surely i must not be the only one who took that sentence to mean that playing computer games for a job is amateur compared to "real" jobs and no, i wasnt trolling at the start, it was a legitimate question. im curious as to how sick effort's mother is

Reread his last sentence: "spending time with your ill mother is a great reason to retire from playing computer games whether shes terminal or not" -> his mother is sick, retiring is a great idea regardless if its terminal or not -> no insult to computer games. You can easily apply that logic to other jobs though a video gaming job has a much shorter life so the statement makes more sense.
Also, cmon, are you really comparing making decision for Apple to someone playing a video game T.T They don't even come close at all... It's one thing to respect the players which I'm sure most people on TL do but it's another to put them on that high of a pedestal when comparing them to other really high end jobs. In other words, please don't make that kind of comparison.
After the Savior debacle, Effort was the reason I continued to follow CJ. Effort's battle with Flash in the OSL finals is my favorite SC memory. Thanks for always putting a little effOrt into it.
This whole "computer games" argument seems to be based on the fact that some people believe the term "computer games" doesn't do being a progamer justice. But being a progamer is in essence about playing computer games. And playing computer games can be a very challenging, rewarding, difficult, admirable, "grand" thing. If you insist that saying computer games is offensive then you are just sustaining the false paradigm that playing computer games is lazy/bad/etc.
Good luck to effort and his mother, thanks for all the games, memories, practice hours, passion and I hope to see him back some day.
2nd Best Zerg of all time after Jaedong. His play was sometimes indistinguishable from the man himself.
I still fondly remember Effort showing how to (BW) micro (in SC2) in a televised game for the first time, trashing the upstart DRG thus SC2 only fans, demonstrating the potential of a real elephant.
As amazing as he is at the game, family is more important. So hopefully he can deal with that first, sad to hear though. Edit, saw that his mom passed today, my thoughts are with you.
I just read the weirdest thread in BW section about Effort (not his mom) passing away... and was wtf shock. Apparently mistranslation and the thread was quickly locked. Still a great personal tragedy for him and I'm very sorry.
