You cant blame "the community" really as they were right about the 5000 other mods that did not become anything.

So yeah if there are 50 games with 100 serious mods each and out of all of these 2 became big (CS and DotA), then where would you expect starbow will land? With the 2 or with the 5000? Statistics are not on your side really.

well with that attitude i would only expect shitty games for the next 20 years given general trends in gaming right now. I want starbow to take after Witcher 3, not Assassin's Creed Unity, regardless of "statistics being on its side."

pretty sure both witcher 3 and assassin creed are not originally mods

they aren't, but i was talking about his use of statistics to predict starbow's success when compared to CS and dota, it's inherently flawed: there's much more that goes into a mod or game's success than statistics, and using statistics to prove your point ignores the vast plethora of variables that determine if it "blows up.."
Have you considered the MMO-Champion forum? You are just as irrational and delusional with the right portion of nostalgic populism. By the way: The old Brood War was absolutely unplayable

Being a mod thats essentially 10+ years old and having diehard fans for the same amount of time certainly helps, as it was the case with both DotA2 und CS:GO and to an extent LoL.

His point is that its super fucking hard to "blow up" as a mod, and it's even harder to monetize on it which is just what you need nowadays to compete.

I'm just burned & bored by the general meta of HotS and in LotV I can break that. Although I gotta agree that I play less and less LotV.

Might pick up Starbow until LotV is more fun again.

The thing that makes me say LotV is worrying is that I found it refreshing too at the beginning and got bored of it after like 50ish games. I have maybe played three games since the adept buff. HotS meta is stale, I give you that, but it's pretty solid. LotV is just gimmicky right now, and I hope major progress will be done this summer, otherwise the outlook will look more bleak than ever for SC2.

true, and it's weird that skins/monetization packages actually bring people to games.. like i wish bw had skins after i play dota or CS, just to personalize the game or give extra money to fish.. with regard to SB, they would need their own client to monetize imo, there's no way blizz would let them do it in sc2.. so i don't think they'll be able to do it

edit~however they can still add customization skins with the previously mentioned "continuous ladder in client," which tracks stats between games without the need for eros (already used on sc2 games like 1:1 obs), you could just make it an incentive like "you need to make 1000 overlords to unlock this ovie skin, 10,000 to unlock this one, etc" similar to the WoL decal system with wins

Does anybody do anything other than copypaste old sc1 strategies in TvP? I'm really itching to see how bio-oriented strategies work, especially with 100% overcharge, tech labs, fast ghosts with (I think lockdown of sorts) mech stun ability, easy nukes, etc. I don't get why everyone completely 100% ignores the starbow stuff.

Wow nice motivational speech m8. I think you just changed my life.
Nah man get real. You are over thinking this so much. The point is that just as much history has taught us trough CS and DotA that it can happen, history has also taught us that its almost certain that it wont happen.
But yeah believe in chasing dreams, maybe reality wont hit you.

lol. Nowhere has anyone stated that's all we care about. In fact I'm pretty sure most of the people involved with Starbow just hope for a nice stable player base of a few hundred people. If there could be 50 to 100 people in Eros at all times (we're at like 47 right now) I think most of us would be pretty happy.

The discussion is/was not about whether or not Starbow is worth doing. It definitely is worth doing even if it were just for these guys' portfolios and the fun of a few.
It is about whether or not Starbow can/will ever be what CS and DotA are.

And the point people tried to made is: Yes, it definitely can be something like that. But we don't really know what it actually takes. Luck? Someone pumping a lot of money into it? Skins?

Being a good game is definitely the base requirement, and whether or not that is the case is up to every individual. But being a good game to many is not the end of it.

Yes, sorry about my sarcasm here.

Ofc we do this because we love the game and the end goal is not to be the next Dota. Now, if we DID become the next dota, I would not be too sad either, and it is always OK to dream and hope :D

The best we can do is play the game and watch the events. The more people stay loyal to the mod, the better chance it has of growing even more. And as long as StarBow grows it can keep getting better.
Go try StarBow on the Arcade. TL thread: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=440661

I'd like to ask some questions (aimed at the Starbow community)

I gave up on SC2 maybe 4 months after WoL came out. Switched to dota and have been playing it ever since, now, I played BW at a D+ level on iccup for a few years before that but am extremely rusty. What is the general skill level of people playing starbow?

Second question. I'm not giving Blizzard any money whatsoever, I won't be buying expansions ect. Is this free?
