10/2/13 Character Profile - Mach As we embark on the latter half of our Kickstarter, we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight another one of SC2VN’s characters and explain our naming process. Characters in SC2VN are referred to by their professional gamer handles by both their fellow characters and the game itself. You won’t see or likely even learn most characters’ first or last names. That’s something we’ve done intentionally. We aim to emphasize the Starcraft’s importance as something more than just a game that our characters play: It forms their very identity. ![]() Read more updates on our Development Blog!

![]() PC bangs in Korea play a huge role in the development of esports games, some holding weekly small tournaments for aspiring gamers to see where they stack up. While professional gamers rarely compete in amateur tournaments after they break into the big leagues, PC bangs remain an integral part of the competitive and gaming culture of South Korea. The Courage tournament used to be the gateway tournament for aspiring progamers who were looking to obtain a mandatory progaming license if they wished to compete in KeSPA (Korean eSports Assoication) sanctioned StarCraft leagues. NoNy and Ret, two well-known international StarCraft players, attempted to compete in Courage but were unable to obtain their license after being knocked out early in the tournament. In SC2VN, the PC Bang will be an integral part of meeting fellow players to practice and forming new rivalries. When designing our characters, we drew inspiration from popular Korean progamers. SC2 is an international game, and players from across the world mingle at international tournaments even though language sometimes proves to be a barrier. However, some Korean players remain extremely popular overseas because of how open they are to fans and the personalities they display on stream and competition. The fun-loving, smiling, and apparent out-going nature of the real MKP was the inspiration for how we would write him in game in a way that fans would recognize, but also give our version of characters a unique flair. Other players in StarCraft 2 have earned a reputation of being cold, crude, and even hostile toward fellow players – especially after a loss. The rich amount of real world characters we could draw from also gave us inspiration to flesh our both original and familiar characters for players to interact with. ![]() The characters in the final game are constantly undergoing redesign, but we hope to keep some of them familiar to StarCraft 2 fans for the appeal of socializing, practicing, and competing against well-known players. Becoming a progamer is a continual struggle in every aspect of their life. Not only do aspiring professional gamers give up their youth to go into an uncertain career, but retiring progamers also face the uncertainty of what to do next after 3-4 years of a profession that some people have never heard of. Players face rivalries, slumps, sponsorship issues, problems with teammates, and many more forms of conflict. We definitely won’t be at a loss of ideas, and SC2VN will touch aim to outline the obstacles that players face inside and outside the game. Try our demo for SC2VN! In this news update, we explore the history of StarCraft and the first progamers who ventured to Korea to live their dream. The focus is on the history of these players, and how they inspired the story and world for our game. Ret and NoNy are two active StarCraft 2 players who have also experienced one of the most competitive Korean tournaments in StarCraft: Brood War. In Brood War, professional players had to obtain a progaming license from KeSPA (The Korean eSports Assoication) by competing in the Courage tournament. Back then, this was the gateway tournament to getting into a professional team and competing in the big leagues. Neither managed to make it through the entire bracket, though Ret did attempt numerous times. Their entire journey is documented through video by Artosis: There are many stories and examples for StarCraft 2 as well, but I wanted to highlight the Brood War examples since these players really were the first to attempt such a feat. Internationally, esports has matured greatly since then, and players have much more opportunity without finding the need to move to Korea. Still, it’s still inspiring to read and watch these stories from the previous decade and witness the history in comparison to how things are today. What I really don't like is using real people for characters. By all means, draw inspiration from them, but I think it's inappropriate for an original work. It would be okay for fan fiction. I wish you would go with imaginary characters instead.

The news just broke that MarineKingPrime (MKP) has recently switched games from StarCraft 2 to League of Legends. For those unfamiliar with the esports landscape, it’s very rare for a player to switch to a different competitive gaming genre and find success. SC2VN drew one of its character inspirations from MKP himself due to his influence in professional StarCraft, and we felt it would be appropriate to talk a bit about his history and departure. MarineKingPrime gained notoriety in StarCraft 2 when he first appeared in the GSL under the ID of Boxer. At the time, he was dubbed “Fake Boxer” or “Foxer” because he shared the nickname of one of the most popular StarCraft players of all time - SlayrS_Boxer. MKP turned heads when he defeated the first StarCraft 2 GSL champion - FruitDealer in convincing fashion and made it to the grand finals only to fall short to NesTea. ![]() Due to his excellent marine unit control, he changed his name to MarineKing due to the request of his fans (with Prime being his team’s tag). MKP soon became known as the “King of Silver” due to placing 2nd in many tournaments during his 2011 competitions. He finally achieved a run of championships in 2012, placing first in MLG events and also clutching a win for the Prime team during the GSTL event at IPL4. He became one of the most accomplished and well known progamers in StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty. MarineKingPrime’s international appeal not only came from his high level of play, but also from his personality that shined through his games. He was very emotional about his results, either displaying huge smiles after a victory or being on the verge of tears after defeat. International friends became very attached to his growth as a player. In 2011, Reddit StarCraft crowdfunded a plane ticket a sponsorship for MKP to attend his first international event at MLG Orlando displaying the community’s support for one of their favorite players. MKP became one of the first Korean players to receive such support from international fans. MKP never found the same success in StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm after his results began dropping off near the end of Wings of Liberty. His results became non-existent in Heart of the Swarm and there were rumors of his retirement floating around the Internet. Still, the emotion reaction of fans to his departure shows that his influence on the scene is everlasting. The career of a progamer is uncertain and can end at a moment’s notice. Slumps are especially hard on player, and the unfortunate truth is that there may not be any light at the end of the tunnel. The decision MKP made to switch into what is seen to be a more lucrative opportunities unearths many difficulties that progamers face. Professional competition in any competition is cut-throat, unforgiving, and often requires great sacrifice which can cause many to question their line of profession and look for opportunities elsewhere. The MKP we depict in SC2VN is fictional, but his bubbly and open personality is something that fans identified with in 2011 when it seemed that some Korea players seemed constantly stern and unemotional to wins and losses His influence on the competitive scene goes reaches beyond his gameplay, and we hope he finds great success in his new venture.
