GanZi has announced on his twitter that he will be retiring citing wrist issues which he cannot recover from.
김동주 @GanZi1987 I'm retire sc2
김동주 @GanZi1987 Can't recovery for my wrist.
Ganzi started his career on woongjin stars in BW where he most notably took a map off jaedong. In SC2 he was most famously part of slayers winning GSL August code A and top 4 of GSL October 2011. Joining complexity after slayers folded he most notably achieved high finishes in multiple MLGs before finally ending his career on azubu where his most significant accomplishment was an all kill of new star hoseo.
such a sad reason for retirement :/ unfortunately wrist issues is a huge issue for all progamers. i don't think everyone know how to prevent wrist issues, not that you can ever 100 % protect yourself from it when you play so much (I think).

vertical mouse and keyboard help a lot, but how good can you be with them :S
hmm wrists probably didn't help his case. He hasn't gotten any achievements lately right? I remember he was considered a top terran back when Slayers was still alive. Best of luck to him!
Another top player going down due to wrist problems. its so sad to see. I really hope Teams will do something about it, teach players ways to prevent injuries on your body etc.
Health is health,i guess if he's been playing since BW the human body sometime can't handle such gesture. That's sad especially since he was a very likeable fella. Hope the best for him in life.
I can't blame him for a second for his decision, but it doesn't make it any less disappointing. A lot of the 'old guard' of SC2 are starting to retire. Several big names in several days.
Gonna miss cheering for Ganzi. GL to him in the future.
Player retires because he is no longer winning and in injured. People say that SC2 is dying because player is not longer winning, is injured and retires. Standard for SC2.
Ganzi I will miss you really much. You've been one of the most awesomest programer ever. Without your injury maybe you'ld be at the top... Anyway good luck in the future.
I hope for him that he can find a job after ending his professional gaming career. I would love if he could participate in something to teach young pro-gamer to take care of their health and particularly their wrists.

Why is it that Starcraft II is falling apart every time someone retires. Ganzi has had very few notable achievements for more than a year, and with wrist issues it's most likely not going to change.

Less competitors, smaller teams. People just see the emphasis on people leaving rather than realizing that StarCraft is filtering its growth. Underachievers of the past are now either considering a retirement or moving onto new endeavors.

Exactly. League and Dota 2 will go through this as well. League will after this season of LCS ends and Dota 2 will do this after TI3. New stars will come in. It is the nature of all sports.
He was such a talented Terran in 2011, I guess he didn't quite manage to reach the heights expected of him but I'd say he had a decent career nonetheless. All the best Ganzi!
Another farewell to the original Woongjin terrans. Ganzi was always the man that almost could. I really enjoyed both his play and personality quite a bit.
I'm retire sc2. 3Years a go i'm starter sc2life. It was really crazy experience. I will never forget everything. I wish return in the future Goodbye sc2
Gl in life GanZi! The old Slayers terrans are slowly going Only MMA and Ryung left ( And Taeja but he only get well known on Liquid even though he was an online beast on Slayers and once got Boxer into Code S by winning in a tie-breaker that had no impact on him self anymore. Great moment)

Dude you can't blame LoL for someone's wrists being imploded like this. Or for someone not getting the results he's used to and wanting to move on with his life and go to college.

Dont you just love it when people compare two completely unrelated topics?

Kespa came and delivered a ton of new pros. The market has only room for a certain amount of pro's, so some have to go. This + just life: some people go study, some stop because of injuries, army, or just because they get too old and start a family.

It's not. It's august, and like every fucking year contracts are expiring and many pros ask themselves whether they should stop. Lol doesn't shot down any fucking game and no you don't have to kill yourself. On top of that atm there are more korean pro gamers for starcraft than there have ever been for brood war. Star 2 isn't dieing, and it won't die until star 3 comes up, and for the love of god I really wish our community wouldn't be full of morons who believe otherwise, because tbh I think it looks so retardet to any outsider getting into star 2 when people keep saying the game is dead, when it is the dumbest thing you could ever say about a game that literally produces more content than anyone can consume. On top of that there are freaking 3 broadcasters of starcraft in korea, lol being bigger doesn't mean no other game can exist, hell brood war was bigger at it's peak than lol is right now and even then there was enough room for other games to coexist in korea.

I know, before I clicked on the thread I was like "Oh boy, I bet people are gonna be posting that SC2 is dead".
Was not disappointed. If anything, there might be a problem with all these people who are getting wrist injuries for playing SC2 too much. Maybe Blizzard needs to make the game more accessible and easier to play?

Pretty much this. Even with the recent retirements, the amount of pro players is still much much larger now compared to the pre-Kespa days.

I cam agree with that. He looks held with-in most of the time all serious and everything, but everyone remembers his gangnam dance when the korean's flights were delayed. I think he'd be a great commentator. Sad to see him go, but good luck where ever he persues his next career !

Well if you look closely, a lot of Esf players are Kespa progeniture. MvP and Ganzi in WJS, Nestea in KT rolster (as almost all IM player i think (Kespa not KT i meant)). Si Kespa always delivered tons of new pros even when they were still playing BW.
But we still have a lot of good player around here. Sad to see Ganzi retire thou. Contracts ending are bringing lot of bad surprises

Once October rolls around and KeSPA can acquire a ton more ESF guys I think the SC2 in Korea at least will stabilize and have a long future.

Starcraft* It's the only game that causes that much pain in the wrists. Do you imagine seeing League or Call of duty players get Carpal tunnel for playing to fast? lol.
Next to Nestea's GSL2-win, Ganzi winning Code A when it was still the hipster tournament (as refered to by some TL writer at the time of the fabled format-change) is my most memorable GSL-moment. He couldn't hold back the tears. Neither can I now =/ Ggwp Ganzi.
blizz should really inspect terran race since a shitload of terran players (like 80% of carpal tunnel problem are terran players) are having wrist problems cause either you die kiting or die trying! :D
Used to like him long time ago, then after slayers disbanded he basically went for a holiday to a foreign team just to earn money dancing gangnam style or forcing his face into any camera he could find. I never cared about Azubu so I take this as a positive news. Good luck to him in whatever he does for the sake of old times.

So shit to have to leave because of wrists though.
? He won a Code A and he made a ro4 code S losing to mvp and he had good MLG runs. How is that "never really got going?"

If you're going to bash on him why even post in this thread.
Every year around august contracts expire, people retire or switch teams. And then people act like its brand new. Those retiring will be replaced by new blood.

Iirc after joining complexity he also said he will join the military a year later. This combined with his wrist issues dont make this the most surprising move. Still sad such a nice guy has to leave the scene.
Ganzi was one of my favorite Terrans on SlayerS... does anyone else remember when he proxied a barracks in the fog underneath someones ramp? Such a beast TT

Or when he proxy marauder bunker rushed inside TaeJa's main in Code A semis.
On August 08 2013 06:35 Havik_ wrote: What's exactly happening to these guys that's fucking up their wrists? Couldn't better hand posture fix this kind of thing??
Probably has to do something with training 10 hours a day for several years in a row. Posture isn't going to fix this, it's just repetitive stress.
If you do any activity for 10 hours every day, your joints will wear out. Sooner or later.
Sad to see Ganzi leave due to health problems. I really enjoyed watching him perform and even doing that crazy gangnam style dance on stage. Truely an amazing person.

ROFL. The SC2 pro scene is still very much over saturated.
Ganzi was a really fun player to watch. I remember his games specifically from when he was on Slayers. He was a fantastic player at the time. I respect his decision of retiring. His bodies health should be the main priority. I hope he sticks around in e-sports, whether it be as a coach or commentator.
this is what happens to people who play too much, we see it a lot in china and korea in video games since they are forced to practice for long hours every day, yes it makes great players but it grinds down the joints and many of pros have had to take breaks or even retire.
Sad news. His series with Marineking where he won Code A was one of the most intense and thrilling TvT series I have ever watched, one of my top 5 series of all time.
I will never forget his runs in code a and code s in 2010. That was my first taste of e-sports and it was glorious. Ganzi fell off a bit since then, but still a remarkable player. I wish him all the best.
So many players quitting due to wrists - it's almost like humans weren't made to sit and play RTS games for hours, spamming mouse clicks and key strokes...

It's not for everyone man. That's why they're pro athletes in every sport. It's also very taxing on the knees to jump in basketball etc.
like pretty much all the slayers players from back in the day he had a lot of talent. i never saw him on the same level as mma, ryung or coca- but then again, just a little more luck and he may have swept them. so interesting to see how so many incredibly talented players don't nearly win as much as one would expect...
Aw man that's really sad. I'll always remember his Code A win over MKP when everyone else in the studio was supporting MKP and Ganzi very graciously gave me a picture afterwards since I was cheering for him ^__^
Hope good things happen to this guy in the future, he deserves it.

I was just thinking that. I always enjoyed his interviews!
Ah that's a shame, have enjoyed watching him over his time and felt he has always been a bit underrated. Good luck with whatever he goes for next, I second him commentating as being something which could potentially be epic
Sad to see him go, wasn't he one of the first Koreans to join a western team (maybe memory also serves me wrong here).
Also, I wish there would be more awareness for wrist injuries in the scene. Sure, wrist injuries are omnipresent, but I yet have to see a good guide on how to actively prevent them or make it better if you have one.
