Registration is now open! Tournament begins on Thursday, Jun 06 4:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00)
It's been a while since we announced the finalists for the second TeamLiquid map contest and since then we've been hard at work polishing the maps as best we can. Thanks to the folks in our TL Strategy team, we've tested these maps thoroughly and have tried to break them as much as we possibly could. We took that feedback and let the mappers make some last minute adjustments - some big, some small - in order to create the strongest set of candidates we could present. Now it's time to let the public loose on these maps and determine which of these you like the best. The judging process begins on Thursday with the first of two TL Opens designed to play test the maps.
Currently the tournament will start at the round of 256 (subject to popularity!) and will be Bo1 until the Ro64 where matches will be Bo3. In departure to previous TL Opens, each semifinal will have different map sets so that we can maximize the number of maps showcased during the broadcasted portion of the tournament. The finals will be Bo5.
There will be a prize pool of $200 for this event, with $100 going to the winner. As with previous TL Opens, we will be allowing community casters to live cast games from the early rounds. If you want to do this, please PM Heyoka to get added to our list of accepted casters.
The Maps
TL Strategy will be doing a feature piece discussing each of these maps. The article will look at how we expect the maps to play out and comment on some of their unique and interesting features. Until then, you can click on the images below to check out high res pictures of the maps.
(4) TPW Electric Circuit

There was Xel'Naga fortress in GSL a while ago where the Xel'Naga tower in the middle despawned after 7mn or something like that iirc. Shame it didn't last long, i actually like it, 3 players maps are quite rare
TPW Keru is like, cloud kingdom 2.0 I like electric circuit but something about it is off, feels more like a actual playable version of delta quadrant and not the brood war electric circuit.

That was the WoL version of Akilon I believe
Yeah, the XNT used to be on the high ground next to LoS blockers where people proxies pylons nowadays.
You could have used the idea i applied to my map Fotra Këpuka and add LoS Blockers with pathing blockers in the border of the natural, that way the lack of highground doesn't affect the players as much. + Show Spoiler +
The way i see the maps chosen will be Ravage, Yeonsu, Frost, Insidious and maybe Koprulu since Electric Circuit only have those 2k hp rocks i don't think it will be enough to stop strong timing attacks, the same with Khalim's. For Strangewood i'm not sure if those changes are enough, i still feel that that vertical path is too narrow, Foresta has a similar layout in the naturals but for my map i made that area more open since it could give serious problems to zerg players trying to get a surround vs a mech army, but other than that the map looks really good with the changes ^^
If blizzard goes ahead and decides to add maps such as electric circuit to the map pool, I hope they are prepared to change the map pool with more frecuency, since having maps such as khalim, Koprulu or any non standard map in the map pool for too long will mean that the players will learn how to abuse the map to the max and that will lead into imbalance in the ladder, and then that imbalance will lead into the players blaming the mapmakers for doing "shitty maps" when it was blizzard fault for not changing the map pool, so yeah, Dkim i know you or one of your minions are reading this, so if this is one of yours evil plans to make the mapmakers look bad and then "rescue" the escene with another of your maps, well props to you because this was planed brilliantly, if it's not you better update the map pool more frecuently when adding non standad maps or you will end up having many angry nerds (me included).
zerg players trying to get a surround vs a mech army, but other than that the map looks really good with the changes ^^
This line is the one reason I love that map so much.
It's nice to finally have a map where mech vs zerg actually feels strong rather than pretty much every map in the current pool. I mean I mech every game, but I feel behind purely on the basis of maps half the time.
The lowground main change to keru should be celebrated and not wept over. It was the least interesting "interesting" feature of the map, and would ensure that a lot of the map's games didn't last long enough for the actual cool parts of the map to get used. And, it made no sense to do it (lowground main), it just seemed random, whereas the other features of the map actually make sense. Good map now.
Announcement thread got my hopes up with 12:15 EST tournament start, but on registration it says 1 day and 7 hours, which would be closer to 18:15 EST tournament start, too late for me on that day :<
haha funny how everyone flamed me for judging that lowground main as bad.. surprise surprise! They changed it to a standard high ground main! Sad that the map is still bad (Keru obv.)
At least there are 2 to 3 maps which could actually make it. Hf everybody!

Outside of (what I thought was a good) low ground main, Keru is an amazing map and I'd argue it's better than anything on ladder right now confidently, even with the higher ground main.
Just so everyone is aware, ESV Ravage was updated with a few changes to the bottom left and top right bases. The OP shows the old image but once you click on it, it reverts to the new and updated screenshot. Here's an easier way to look at the image if you don't want to go back to the OP:

I know exactly what you mean but as i said there where other options to keep the lowground main base and still have a non volatile map in which all ins reigns supreme, i know, i did it. The thing is that i loved the idea of having a balanced map with a lowground main on the ladder, and it's kind of dissapointing to know that that won't be happening at least any time soon
And for the thing about Lowground didn't made sense, it's not wrote in stone that a lowground main can only exists if the natural is in the higher level of terrain, it's just a matter of will and think ahead of the possible problems that may arise with the layout.
I think my favorites are Insidious and Yeonsu, although Insidious and Ravage are quite similar. Insidious to me feels like a larger Belshir Vestige, and Yeonsu is quite creatively designed. Also, I like Korprulu's idea a whole lot and think it could lead to some great games, I just don't like the texture pack.
Wait so I'm confused. The banner at the top says the check in starts at 5:00 PM CEST but the info page says 6:30 CEST. I'm assuming we go by the banner? Or is that a mistake?

Will be the same as other TL Opens, having people cast whichever games they would like for most of the rounds. I've had a handful of people ask me about it so we'll see who is around.
Pushing back check-in time a few minutes to help with the confusion of the main post not being correct at some spots! So we'll start slightly later than originally planned.

you know... there is more than one match to be played... I don't think even we communists from the EU have all night
I'd better not face a diamond through midmasters first round. I've faced plenty of those and lost horribly. I'm fine losing horribly to a pro/semi-pro.

Yeah same... silly thing is, I actually noticed that the registration page had a different time than the info thread but I just figured the registration page was wrong since it also mentioned a higher maximum number of players than 256 IIRC. Should have asked about it like someone else did. Oh well, more sleep for me I guess.

Yeah, I only check the info page to see if any other pro players had signed up and noticed the time change. Pretty disappointed since I even played some practice games on the maps with a friend and apparently the next one is 2v2 to test those maps
Out first round to Apocalpyse he took every base on the map and made me look like i was silver or something T.T im masters i swear. That was so pathetic by me lol

haha, same. "hm, this map should be a lot about mutas" thousand banes appear. Then a thousand roaches appear. Though my mistake... Should have rolled it easily, after holding the baneling allin. Just forgot the lair and then my mutas popped while his roaches were ravagin my base and never got back in the game :D

I really hope Korpulu doesn't get taken out because of the mineral things, storm and collosus deals with that move fine and it's by far the best map in the contest.
Cheeseheadlogic is basically saying he wants all the super standard maps and I really hope that doesn't happen.

Yep, totally disagree with this caster at well. Probably shouldn't care cos it's just some random guy but he was like the only caster and called everything that's new and interesting horrible...
Thanks to all the people who tuned in to my cast for the finals! I appreciate it so much! It was a lot of fun to cast this tournament, third one I have casted ever, and there will be more to come!
Thanks to Teamliquid and Heyoka for giving me the opportunity to cast the finals, was a blast!

Koprulu had the most amazing matches. You just need to spot really well. I don't think it was overpowered in any matchups favor because one of the games I casted a terran opened fast reactor reapers, and had 4 reapers behind the mineral line perpetually for SO long. It was apocalypse's game I believe. Also if you take that base as your third, you have to have a very mobile army. Maybe you can only do that when you have some kind of fast moving air or hellions or something to really handle it. I think the third (since it's cross only) to the side of your natural is a much better locaation for the third base as protoss if you are going colossus since your army can wedge at your ramp just past your natural and have enough moving room to defend better. Same with terran, taking that far base, but there was a lot more going on in those matches than just map balance.

Yeah lol, at the end he was like "Keru. That's a bad map" and "Khalims Will. I hope we never see that again" or something similar to that. I completely disagreed with his analysis for which maps were good and bad. Standards are ok, but Mereel's maps are among the most genius designs we've seen in the history of SC2 imo and the games seemed to show that they were relatively balanced.

I like maps that open up aggressive options. It's the same reason I like the proleague maps, a lot of creativity. I feel like this tournament more showcased people's abilities to quickly adapt to new styles of play and problems to deal with on different map styles.

I'm in agreement. Although it seemed to me that the players didn't know how to defend properly on some of the maps (and didn't use all of the features to the fullest extent). I imagine games on Koprulu and Mereel's maps would be longer and more stable once players figure out the best ways to play them. Also just btw, Koprulu is all spawns! Close positions doesn't have the same problem with the third though, because both expand away from the opponent and can be defended from the highground somewhat, unlike cross.
I didn't do any of the ro8 because I was doing all the replays I had up to ro32 that were supplied to me until heyoka asked me to do semi-finals (the match that cheeseheadlogic wasn't doing).
Here's all my vods, some are still transferring, spent about an hour highlighting manually on twitch.tv since I really don't know how else people do this. It takes a while. If there are any problems with the videos, just let me know in the vod comments so I can fix it. Thanks!

Thanks for uploading those, I had to sleep through the TL Open but loved seeing a couple games on my maps and all the great games on everybody's maps.

All of the maps were very exciting to cast games on. I liked them a lot better than the "safe" maps that many map makers are focusing on nowadays.
