It's a combination of skill and publicity when it comes down to male gamers, it's publicity when it comes down to female gamers. So yes and no.

Yay! been regularly watching her stream, congrats!

Well, she's got on Academy team; so it's not like she is on a pro team, yet.
Now, my bit to the topic - it's again the issue of (let's not kid ourselves, right) pretty women being picked up like that. Don't want to be upset or hate on the girl in question, as I do not know her; it's more like the whole notion of such pickup, and it tells me wrong message: "Be a cute girl with a huge stream following & you get an awesome opportunity like that", so let's be honest here - if a random Masters guy or a girl like me, or hell, you, and you there, asked to be part of this Academy project, would they take him/her? I kind of doubt it. Even though there are people, who'd love nothing more than to practice in a well-established academy team; with solid guidance like Quantic no doubt can provide. It's literally a dream of many StarCraft II passionate people.
I personally feel this is one of the hardest struggles of this community & it shows each time some woman is openly announced on a renown team, even if it's "just" Academy. I wish it was more about this passion, rather than, you know, always about being a girl or whatever else, which is equally insignificant as someone's gender or appearance.
But, my hopes are still high and I want to try staying positive, because there's enough negativity as it is, in this community. I have nothing but than respect for Maddelisk, Flo & Scarlett; they've been working hard & showed their passion for the game & they have been accepted by the community, even though it took them quite a while to not be looked down upon. I wish Kaitlyn the same; to work hard and spread the love of the game. Because in the end, that's what matters the most.

CANADA! CANADA! CANADA!
Okay fanboying aside this'll be kinda cool. Will she be joining Quantic in their team house?

So what about the other 100's of mid masters, where is there academy invite? Might as well just pick up tumescentpie

Hard working player, would not be surprised to see her hit GM before most other people who get on team academies. Grats

As per usual the 'hur she's purty' fucking bollocks here. It's only an academy pickup and it's not as if she's getting muchos money.
Good luck to her, hopefully Quantic can market her competently unlike some of their previous female pickups.

wow! Electrical Engineering! that takes some gonads to do, alot of my mates do that at uni and it is an incredible amount of work!
on topic though, I watched her stream from time to time back in WoL and in HOTS, she seems like she knows what she is doing so should be cool to see how she can further improve in a team environment.

Men are recruited due to their prominent role in other capacities, yes. Is Kaitlyn in that bracket? Had people for the most part even heard of her before this pickup?
She can grow into such roles for sure, as things stand I doubt very much that she was picked up for being a prominent community figure

Holy shit, Quantic picked up someone for their Academy team who is not only a decent player but has a personality and good people skills! It must entirely be about her gender. (/sarcasm)
Congrats to Kaitlyn, she's been working hard to improve and she's had to do it while politely ignoring all of the asshats and trolls in her stream audience. Yeah, she's a girl. So what? She can still zerg-stomp 99% of the people that will bitch about her gender and she does it with typical Canadian aplomb. Hopefully she can concentrate on getting even better with the help of Quantic Academy and move up to the main team.

I guess she did hit masters on her own, which does show that she is actively playing and working on bettering her game.
EDIT: apparently she streams a lot, that would explain that. Sorry for my ignorance D:.
