I have only been playing Starcraft 2 for a few months, but when the loading screen appears I can't help but make some initial assumptions of my opponent based on what portrait they are using. This is geared mainly toward 1v1 (since I don't play many team games) but 2v2, 3v3, etc. options are welcome as well.
Some personal examples of thoughts that pop into my head:
Spectre - not a very good player, but tries to come off as a bad-ass. often focused on trying to look gosu without a willingness to put in the time, effort, and practice necessary to become gosu
Nova - encountering these, as a lower league player, I know these players have plenty of games under their belt but the lack of progression through the ranks indicates an inability to adapt to the changing metagame. I tend to correlate these portraits to play resembling standard builds but hastily or sloppily executed. Obviously some of these associations change depending on league. I tend to play more patiently and rely on them making a mistake or becoming impatient (example: running into my tank line in TvT).
Hybrid/Dark Voice - portrait farmer! likely using 3rd party "software". I'm less likely to cheese for fear of maphacking. Also more on alert to getting cheesed myself.
Kachinsky - possible smurf? or serious 1v1 player does not care about game peripherals is purely focused on becoming a better player. very common portrait but ranges from complete noob to trolling lower leagues to seriously skilled player. This portrait definitely gives rise to the most personal uncertainty - am I playing a well-known user who is going to post this on youtube, or someone too lazy to go and look at their settings?
Also, I tend to worry when a player is using an off-race portrait. More often than not these turn into one-sided games where I get whooped.
I can't really comment on any of the HOTS portraits since it is so new, I haven't really had time to draw any inferences on them based on old games and personal experience.
I'd love to hear what you associate with certain portraits!

Any picture:
"I won't assume anything from the portrait alone since I would just be taking shots in the dark guessing."

If they all have Marcus Cade and all playing Zerg, prepare for 6pool worker rush

You read into it way to much.
Im kinda mad everyone uses Stukov now tho.

Why? He is 1 of my fav characters in the sc universe so I had to use that portrait when I unlocked it!

sometimes I amuse myself by making a mental note on how a player play and I often connect the mental note to his portrait. but I'd never alter my play due to assumptions based upon a portrait.
actually come to think of it, there was a period of time (like 2 weeks) where almost every single player with the Sarah KErrigan portrait fromWoL were BM and often very cheesy :D

The observations as stated are initial thoughts that pop into my head involuntarily within the first few seconds of the loading screen. It's human nature to make an initial judgement based on what visual stimulus you are presented with.
Kind of like how the initial reaction to encountering someone on the street wearing tattered, smelly clothing is quite a bit different than somebody in a 3-piece suit and shiny Oxfords.
I'm sure some people are more focused on the race and map during those few seconds of loading but screenname and portrait can also have an impact. As previously stated, league is another important variable that also changes the distribution of the portraits.

Still using Marcus ever since Hotbid ordered me to do it, does that make my gameplay predictable? Never gave that too much thought, hah.

I use the zergling portrait, they're cute and have feelings like PETA would like to believe so.

The Kachinsky portrait is commonly known as "the 6 pool face" among my friends.

I don't know who most of the portraits are named after, including mine (1k wins Protoss). What does that make me?

I used to use the probe, because probes are cute as hell. ("meow") I guess this might hint to the fact that I like probes.

In a 4v4, you see quad kachinsky quad zerg, you prepare for quad 6 pool

haha, some of these are spot on. Dark voice is usually never good. Best games tend to be lower level portraits like the baneling, marine, zealot, hydralisk, or just the black guy xD

Dark Voice/Predator=rusher is correct to me.
Any person with the 1000 wins portrait for their race meeting me in my lowly diamond league indicates to me that they are someone who simply doesn't care to adapt their play. I crush these guys half the time, which is more than what should be happening if they really have 1000 wins with their race.

I know what you're talking about man. With my friends, we like to make funny assumptions like these too at the start screen, when we play in team games. Like : _ "full Cade" = They know their shit. Badasses or just cheesy but classy mofos. _ "full other black dudes" = same vibe as Cade, but not as good. _ "full Kachinsky" = Barcode-style gosus. _ "full probe" = mass cannon rushes incoming. _ "Dark voice" = fucking bronze scv rusher. the lowest of trash. _ Marine portrait = MarineKing smurf account _ Starcraft Master = Didn't even complete the 30 challenges, you only need 25 to get the portrait so why would you choose that portrait... _ 1000 1v1 wins = Definitely played a lot, but not very skilled. _ Brutal campaign completion = Come on... _ Starjewel and co = Arcade dweller. _ Fancy WoW, collector premium or Blizzcon portraits = "Lol how lame" but in fact we're just jealous.
Of course, if you want to play seriously, obviously ignore those.
