Those who haven't noticed or heard yet, Developers of StarCraft II are doing an AMA on reddit today, 6th of march, starting at 2PM.

Link: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/ (watch out for the thread)

No idea who's answering the questions or anything, just thought it was a good idea to share this.

Well that's cool and all, but did they really have to do this on that website?

It's certainly a better platform to do this on than TL or the battle.net forums are.

One of the best non answers given yet to the question in spoiler below.
+ Show Spoiler +

The fundamental issue creating stagnant late games lies in the economic system of SC2 that has always capped economic growth beyond 3 mining bases.
The result of this is that late game economies in SC2 are always more or less equal. The late game then becomes a question of who has the most cost efficient army (and it is this that makes the games boring).
Where in BW you would have asymmetrical economies that forced a passive player with an "imbalanced army" and fewer bases into action, in SC2 the economies just conform and become equal.
None of the players has any incentive to be aggressive or to try make the game interesting. All that matters once both players are at 3 bases or above is who is best at preserving their army value.

That's a great question and very well put. I had not heard that said quite so clearly before. We'll certainly talk about it. Obviously we won't be making any changes in this area before Swarm launches.

A lot of answers are by Browder and start with "That's a really interesting question", which is never a good sign.

This one is interesting, though: David Kim on what he learned about game balance:
The most important thing we realized was feedback we get both from ourselves and from pros need to be weighted depending on skill. For example, I personally have a hard time playing Terran compared to the other two races. And back then because I was one of the players who was playing at the highest level, I took this personal experience as a bit too much of an important factor. In the hots Beta, I was also struggling the most as Terran, but this seemed correct for the balance of the game. And sure enough, all the major tournaments that happened so far, all three races balance is looking solid, many Koreans are also saying Terran is the strongest, and overall just gauging my skill level vs. how the game should be more correctly this time around is working out much better.

So there you have it. It's all David Kim's fault.

thank god they will fix the blizz time issue at one time...

What happened to changing the game clock from Blizzard Time to Real Time?

This turned out to be more complicated than we thought. We will get to this down the road. We understand why this is important

wrt their answer to the question about lower economy, pretty much everyone could predict they would say: "we've never heard about that before, but it sounds interesting". At least they are formally aware of it now, which is beneficial.

Surely the whole economy thing would be counteracted by having less minerals at each bases on maps?

That's actually kind of nice that they are changing how they are balancing more so to pro level then themselves xD

so we can blame Terran OP in early WoL because david kim doesn't know how to play?

People in that thread tend to be really positive (well at least they are upvoting) over the changes barrin, lalush, etc, have discussed over the past year or so. It's a lot different from the "omg. if you like BW go play BW" mentality that I tend to see here.

TeamLiquid and Reddit are somewhat different communities, with both their advantages and problems.

And most of the answers were "That's a really interesting question. We will discuss this internally and then get back to you as soon as we know more."

To be honest, I don't expect any other replies from Browder anymore at this point. He's such a smooth talker. David Kim's answers were pretty interesting, though.

You can tell that Dustin Browder has been in the business for a long time because he is master dodger on the questions that question the bad actions on game and unit design.

Does anyone actually get fooled by the positive "we are looking into that!" and the smiles at the end of every answer? My favorite was the one about the resource management and he says how they can't fix any of that because of the beta and how they would have to rebalance the whole game. Like are you fucking kidding me? You have had at least a year to think about it and wouldn't a beta be the perfect ground to tweak this stuff together with unit balance?

You will have to take into consideration build times though. It's not just about the timer in the corner of the screen and the APM calculation. If we were to translate the build times direction to normal time, you would get numbers with decimals. A drone's build time in normal time would be 23.63 seconds, instead of the nice and even 17 seconds.

They obviously can't just change the build times to be more even after they changed the blizzard time to regular time, because that would actually affect balance.

It is a harder issue than most people give credit for.

No it's not. They round up or down as appropriate and then see if it's messed with the balance and put future changes through on that basis. Yeah it takes a patch or 2 but again something they could have easily done with the beta. You've picked one of the fastest building things in the game as your example so yeah a pro probably would notice the 0.4 of a second difference if rounded up to 24 secs, but on eg a bunker or a rax or whatever I doubt it would matter.

This scares the hell out of me. Changes like this are what will keep the game from fading away completely 2 years after LotV, and it's impossible to tell whether or not they're taking the idea seriously. I don't know if they're going to give this the high-ground treatment, where they come back to us after it's 'too late' to make changes, and say "Hey, we didn't like the RNG, and couldn't be bothered to find a solution, so fuck off"

I liked the AMA. They were warm. Didn't dwell as much in detail as the D3 crew had.

But someone should teach Blizzard what does "A M A' stands for. I know that's not how it works with companies, there's a lot they just can't say, or that they better not say or they would create an unfounded hype. But the freaking name is Ask Me Anything.

They did not say they never heard about the economic problems. What Browder said is that he never read it so finely explained before. Which is still something I can't believe. Of course Browder doesn't have the time to read everything's on TL, but the community managers should be aware enough of the big enough discussion there is around this.

But I think if there ever was a time to talk FRB, SC 2 Broodwar and other economic models in official Blizz forums and Reddit, this time is now.

I put a bit more detail on the AMA thread, but just reducing the amount of resources per base addresses only a very small part of the SC2 economic situation. Furthermore, by only doing just so, it causes/hurts several other things like super quick saturation, less option of one/fewer base play, etc.

Random Platinoob Dustin Browder doesn't think that skytoss is a problem because the protoss doesn't get there often enough... That is what I call a lack of forsight.

How do you develop a game, work on it exclusively for a solid 6 years, and not get out of platinum league....?

By spending 50-60 hours a week developing the game instead of playing it.

By not being the only guy that work on it ?

Seriously? You wonder how someone managing a team, working for 6 solid years doesn't have skills playing a game?

That's dumb by default. Reddit is one of the best places you could spend your time IF you turn off all the imgur/memegenerator posts.

/r/programming, /r/learnprogramming, /r/romania, /r/linux, /r/linux_gaming, /r/windowsphone are my daily newspaper.

The AMA was great, I hope we'll see a great improvement in SC2 from now on! Can't wait for HotS to be back up (and released, as well).

This is a pretty good summary of the AMA.

http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/19svzc/ama_summary/

Shortened and cut down responses. I highly advise reading the actual AMA, a transcript will be posted on Battle.net, but until then, there's this.
The AMA: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/19sg1x/we_are_dustin_browder_alan_dabiri_and_david_kim/[1]
DB, DK and AD are who made the comment.

General

DB: SC2 dev team consists of 80+ Developers, hundreds of QA+ Cinematic+Other
DB: Not ready to give details on map marketplace
DB&AD: Did not deliver on promises of the HotS FAQ in terms of Arcade, and will be doing more work on it
DB: They would do polls but the results are never representative as most players don't use the forums
DB: A few developers working on Allstars. Most people working on Swarm, some artists have switches to Allstars with Swarm being finished, while campaign team has started work on LOTV
DB: They would not release the game if they don't think it's good
DB: No plans to go F2P as they can't find a design choice they would be happy with to make it F2P
DB: Reaction to b.net overhaul was surprising, people were way more excited than they thought
DB: We have not seen a decline due to the rise of "DOTA games", they don't see any threat. They are very different games with very different players
AD: Confident HotS launch will go smoothly, expecting "Over 9000" players within 5 minutes of launch
AD: Talking alot about improving the replay screen and how players can view and share plays. No time line yet
AD: B.net API and replay format specification is hopefully coming... eventually
DB: They would like to not patch the campaign if possible, if necessary, they will

Legacy of the Void

DB: Legacy of the Void is in development, Story, Scripts, and Missions have been started.
DB: Custom Campaigns support possible for LOTV
DB: They hope it won't take as long as HOTS but efficient and quick game development is not something they have been great at
DB: Story isn't set in stone yet, they have ideas how it'll end but no final answer

Multiplayer - General

DB: In-game unlockables are limited by memory
DB: Map sizes are much bigger than they ever thought it would be
DB&DK: They have an engineer working on making map-hacks more difficult but do not wish to talk about it for obvious reasons
DB: They will talk about the economy system, but obviously no changes for Swarm
DB: Stronger Team Colors had technical issues that would hurt lower end systems
DB&AD: Blizzard Time to Real Time is being worked on, but it was more complex than they anticipated
DB: The decision for 2 gas was to make SC2s economy more complex as they felt it was too simple with 1
DB: Everybody will see skins, but for players in esports settings, they can choose which skins to display
AD: They would like to continue adding AI builds in the future
AD: Not happy with Barcodes, as it defeats the purpose of GM (that being to be able to easily follow the best players), they are looking to address this but it is a delicate balancing act between privacy and being able to track players
DK: Balance issues could be fixed with maps, but not overdoing it is important
DK: Situation reports will continue
DK: Most tops pros focus on macro and require other players to create good strategies
DK: 3 base play on ladder is more popular than pros. They continue to talk about it but it isn't as major as people think

Multiplayer - WOL

DB: PvP and PvZ had issues in Wings due to the unit mixes available, thinks Swarm has addressed the issues
DK: The Queen patch was actually one of the best changes they made. They still feel like Hellions running in, killing all the drones, and the game just ending wasn't exciting to watch
DK: They tried air and semi-air based maps, but scouting is far more important than in Brood War so it didn't work well

Multiplayer - HOTS

DB: They tried Lurkers again in HotS, but they were not as good as they hoped, they were not as cool/fun/effective as the new units
DK: They are okay with Corruptors, it is not their favorite unit but it works well
DB: Community feedback had a massive effect on the Oracle, "basically undid out entire direction for the unit"
DB: It was hard to get good feedback from pros as they were often biased towards their own race, but David did find some pro players and casters who had more neutral views and formed relationships with them to get feedback
DK: Still thinks Oracle are unique despite losing the ability to harras without killing workers
DK: The goal for the Carrier is to never to be a core unit, but still able to come into play here and there
DK: Nydus worms changes were cut due to too much variety in lair tech for Zerg
DK: They want mech to be viable but not replace bio, feel like it'll be heavily tied to maps
DK: They don't think the Hellbat has many weird rules, other than gaining a bio tag
DB: Altering the core economy (3 base eco cap) would be a huge change and mean re-balancing the entire game

Esports

DB: Happy with KeSPA supporting SC2
DB: They will continue to promote barcraft
DB: A calendar won't be in launch but they will talk about it
DB: Esports is much bigger than they thought it would be, they expected 50 people in a room, not thousands
DB: Plans for 2013 and beyond not finalized, frequently talking to teams and organizers
DB: Esports is a big part of the development process
AD: Gameheart is very cool
AD: The customisable observer UI doesn't allow scripting, but they have some cool ideas for the future of it
AD: Reaction to the Custom Obs UI was a little surprising, they are glad we're excited for even the smaller features in HOTS
DB&AD: The Custom Observer UI shown in the eSports and Multiplayer video as an example, will be available with the HotS Launch.
DK: Maps on ladder could use a huge improvement, current plan is to work more closely with tournaments, not only meaning using tournament maps, but also creating maps with input from them.

Other

DB: Dustin Browder once beat David Kim, as David was reading e-mails during the final battle
DB: Activision have been very supportive of SC2
DB: Dustin Browder watched a ton of TLO, he enjoys watching Grubby and White-Ra stream. MKP is one of his favourite players to watch micro, and NesTea is still his favourite
AD: Alan Dabiris favourite players are Boxer and July.
AD: The team often go watch tournaments together, and have been to barcrafts in Irvine
DB: Browder thinks an RTS on a tablet would not be able to work at the pace of SC2 due to vision being effected by fingers
DB: Dustin is Platinum League - playing random
DB: Dustin wanted to release the game 1 year before release, but Mike Morhaime intervened and said they need more time
DB: Dustin thinks video games are the most complicated form of entertainment built by humans
AD: Alan Dabiri is GM on Korean ladder under the name "|||||||||||||||"
DK: David Kim doesn't just work on balance, he is a General Game Designer, working on all parts (so now you can blame him when dying on brutal campaign too!) of multiplayer.
DK: Strength of reddit is the point system which makes important issues surface to the top quickly, it is one of the easier methods to gather feedback
DB: "Outbreak" is Dustin Browders favorite mission

From Reddit:

Question 1: Where there any people, posts, or topics that were especially helpful feedback for you during the beta? (Even if you didn’t get the chance to act on it yet)

Question 2: Have you considering implementing some sort of survey or poll into Battle.net itself to gather feedback directly from all of the playerbase?

Question 3: During the beta, you guys had a "eSports Beta Feedback" forum for professional players and casters. Was this helpful, and do you plan to keep it open after HotS releases and continue to expand access to it? Post in it yourselves more frequently?

This is the best quote from DB:

"1.I think we got a lot of good feedback early on about the Oracle that caused us to change the way the unit worked completely. There were tons of other helpful posts of course but that issue stands out because we basically undid our entire direction for the unit based on community feedback that we thought was really accurate.

2.We can do some polls, but they will never represent the entire community since so few people relative to the size of our player base actually visits the forums. =(

3.The esports forum was useful but not in the way we thought. Most pro players are extremely biased towards their own race (as they should be) and it was hard for us to get good feedback from them directly. But David did manage to find some pro players and casters who were more balanced in their views on the game and we have formed relationships with them directly to gather feedback."

I love the comment about professional players, which has always been my opinion of their balance views.

Can't wait for HotS to be back up (and released, as well).

r/TTOM is the best but it's NSFL/NSFW/etc.

can't we all just get along well??
First comes hating of the game, then comes hating on the forums???

I really hope someone would ask if the game will become more optimized for multi core beyond 2.

"A few weeks ago, our multiplayer design group was just having a casual meeting at my desk about something while I was just working on something else. Unintentially, I wasn't really listening and I wanted to talk about what I was working on so i said "Yeah I know, but what do you think about this?" And everyone started laughing so hard.
Supposedly, what one of our tech designers said right before I started talking was something along the lines of "Well I completely suck at this game and will never improve."
It was pretty embarassing, but we know each other so well that he knew exactly what happened."

thank god they will fix the blizz time issue at one time...

What happened to changing the game clock from Blizzard Time to Real Time?

This turned out to be more complicated than we thought. We will get to this down the road. We understand why this is important

No. If you round every time to full seconds, it will make differences of a maximum 0.5 seconds. Do you really think half seconds make that much of a difference?

DB: Map sizes are much bigger than they ever thought it would be
DB: They will talk about the economy system, but obviously no changes for Swarm

They knew about the "economy problem" for a long time an chose to do nothing, and now we know why: they can't be bothered/ don't have the time to rebalance the entire game. If we add that they want to take less time to develop the next expansion, i think it's clear we will not see any "big" changes like death balls or economy.

The mech comments by DK were cringe worthy. Like, what does mech replacing bio have to do with anything? Not even the most hard core mech fans have ever suggested that. He takes a small paragraph to essentially say that they like MM balls more then positional play and it's a "job well done" if mech only works on the occasional map.

Meh, glad i canceled the pre order.

The problem is that they didn't answer everything that could potentially be answered.

I excited about Blizzard discussing the economy problem. There's a big chance they're going to answer just like they answered to the unit colision problem: "we believe players should be able to crump units if they want". If they come with something like "players should be able to stay at 3 bases if they want", we should prepare strong arguments on the following perspectives:

- If this kind of strategy isn't sub-optimal, it's going to be dominant.
- It's not just a matter of balance; it's about how Blizzard want the game to look like. The spectacle thing LaLush mentioned.

Please OneGoal, SC2BW, StarBow and FRB and Starcraft 2 Pro and whoever more guys... don't blink. Now's the time.

It's a little scary how surprised the developers are at so many game trends and community reactions. It's like they work in a dungeon with no communication to the outside world.

StarkHarrow: re you still considering working on Mech on a more BW-Tank Based fashion ? Or are you willing to stick to a core of Hellbat/Thor DeathBall play we could see in the end of the beta ?

DK: We want Mech to be viable but not replace bio. Marine based play has advantages over mech like constant action throughout the whole game.

In HotS games so far, we're seeing a fairly high number of mech games ranging from almos all tank based (example is the MLG game MVP played on Ohana) play, hellbat/thor, ground + air mech, or mostly mech mixed with some bio.

Anyone know what game he is talking about?
