I'm quite sure it started on Starcraft. Never saw it on other games before that. Back in the days everyone would say gl hf during the start countdown. Not quite sure how it started tho ...

Warcraft 2 at the very least.

On a side note, I find it amusing people often think SC was "the shit". WC2 and AoE2 were extremely good as well.

I thought it came from online poker. You would say it before heads up play.

Well, AoE2 was surely a cool game, but some major design flaws made it impossible to take off as a well-rounded and spectator friendly e-sports.

You find it amusing that people think a game is good when you acknowledge that it's good...?

counter strike uses it aswell, and its hard to pick what was first CS or BW.

Aswell as BW, CS introduced infamous Battle reports after matches since like year 2k. They grew together, one was mainly Europe/America one for Asia. Both were the biggest pre moba/sc2(current times) esports.

Neither.. It came from other sports, like football/whatever, and nerds shortened it.

No he is just saying that SC1 vanilla was pretty bad. And BW was good but not the be all end all.
AoE2 was a very good RTS as well as wc2. Often SC and especially the newer SC2 fans take it for granted that BW was "the shit".

And the gl hf I would guess was just one of the many acrnomys the internet brought up.
Halflife, Q3 and Unreal (Tournament) are all as old as SC1 just that those games were from the get-go pretty good for competitive play.
edit: fyi, wc2 was releases in '95.

mmm I atleast used it in Warcraft2 before Sc1 existed, not sure where it comes from though. But It is probably really old, as gamers are lazy when it comes to typing and they love to make everything as short as possible. Picked it up from chat though.

And that's probably where it started tbh =)

My first encounter with the phrase was in Quake and that would be in 1996. No idea where it started though.

I guess I just dont see the big deal about who shortened it first. It's impossible to find out, and I highly doubt nerds from a certain game can claim they started as most people played several online multiplayer games when it started becoming popular in the 90s

It sounds like something the British says when they do sports.

You should care about the short story of violence. They've already fucked with my money two times. I'm white and live in Europe. Just glad I'm not brown and live near oil...

I usually said that when I played SCBW, but I thought ka stood for kill all (was playing a AOS/Dota style game).

You're showing your age... (very young, I presume)

Internet play existed before Battle.net. I used to play Warcraft II over Kali and before that, I'd hang out in the AOL War2 chat rooms and arrange games via IP there.

Son, don't you know about kali?

ontopic though, I'm 99% sure it came from war2. I can't think of an older game with an online community at the time like War2.

Also I remember prom night mom said GL and dad said HF. I've been using it ever since, that is 10+ years.

True story. The Japanese also said "From?" right before their planes attacked Pearl Harbour.

"What do you think about the matchup?" KAMIKAZEEEEEEEE

people wouldn't really say gl hf in game in bw but there was always a pregame chat where people usually said it and spammed random stuff.

Can't say much about "gl hf".

However, "gg" was used as a tapout (surrender signal) as early as mid 90's, back in the Doom / Quake / Descent days pre-Starcraft. As early as 95 or 96.

I know because we used to use it.

If its not fun I dont want it.

Whoa whoa, I thought QQ was supposed to just look like two eyes crying. I think this is a huge misconception...? (I don't think it's just me)

that's really awesome, if it was from WC2

My memory is failing me. I played lots and lots of counter-strike games starting 2000 and i can't remember if "gl hf" was used. I'm positive about "gg" in the end of a match, but "gl hf" mmmmmmm. I'm getting old
