The Format
For the event, we’ve picked a tournament format that allows for thrilling games and epic battles. The 2012 World Championship Series Global Finals will feature a double elimination group stage and a single elimination playoff bracket. In the group stage, there will be eight groups with four players each. The seeding for the groups will be conditional, random selection. In order to ensure a variety of players in each group, a maximum of two players from the same continent can be in each group, and every group must have players from at least three continents. In order to achieve this group composition, we will be using the following method:

The first three players from each group will be drawn at random, but players will be redrawn if there has already been a player drawn from that continent for that group. For example, if there is a player from Asia in Group C and the third player drawn for Group C is also from Asia, there will be a redraw. When all eight groups have their first three players selected, the remaining player from each group will be drawn at random. This will ensure that there will be a maximum of two players from the same continent in one group and will ensure that there are no groups with players from only two continents.

In the group stage, the 4 players of each group are split into two pairs and will play each other in best of 3 matches. The order of players will be determined in the group selection draw. The first player drawn will be Player 1 and will play Player 2, who will be the second player drawn. Player 3 in the group will play Player 4. The winners of these two matches will then face each other in the Winner’s match. The victor places first in the group and will advance to the single elimination bracket. The losers of the initial matches will then face each other in the Loser’s match. The loser of that match places fourth in the group and will drop out of the tournament. The loser of the Winner’s match and the winner of the Loser’s match will face each other in a fifth match. The winner gets second place in the group and advances to the next round. The loser places third in the group and will drop out of the tournament.
After the round of 32 is complete, the sixteen remaining players will be put in a single elimination bracket. Seeding will be determined by the group stage. The matches are best of 5 until the finals, which will be a best of 7. The winner of Group A will play the runner up in Group H in the first half of the bracket. The winner of Group H will play the runner up in Group A in the second half of the bracket. See below.

Additional details on the group selection and tournament prize pool will be announced soon. For more information about the 2012 StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals, head to the Battle.net World Championship site.

Looks sweet.

I'm curious how much money will be in the prize pool though. Will it be comparable to Valve's money dump into The International?

Poor every esports company ever, now any effort they make will be compared to Riot and Valve's incredible prize pools.

Seems like an okay format though, shades of MSL. Still not quite sure I understand why every tournament organizer is in love with formats that sound super complex when you try to explain them. Probably should be picture-only descriptions in the future.

When comparing WCS prize money don't just look at the grand final, you need to add up all the nationals and continentals.

Not expecting 1 000 000 (altough all together from all the qualifiers etc I guess it could hit that), but something around $100,000 for the 1st place would be pretty awesome to see!

tbh this isn't complex at all. It's GSL-style double elim brackets followed by single elim ro16 bo5 with drawing that ensures as few continent team-kills as possible.

They managed to drag that out into several wordy paragraphs though

Riot is making more money from in-game shops that blizzard ever made of Sc2 nad BW , i think its sound stupid , but MABY Riot in making more money from in-game shop that blizzard from WoW.

Same for Dota 2 game is in beta stage so they wanna promote IT BIG , to make more player come from LoL , and Dota 2 have in-game shop to..

We never gonna see that big prize money in sc2 , because there will be NO in-game shop. Its a shame because i love bw/sc2 more that any moba game ( love dota <3 ) , but its still biznes

Asia: $127,000 and all trips paid to WCS World Finals(9), and Asia Finals(32).
Europe: $190,000 and all trips paid to WCS World Finals(9), and Europe Finals(32).
North America: $120,000 and all trips paid to WCS World Finals(9), and North America Finals(32).
Oceania: $30,000 and all trips paid to WCS World Finals(2), and Oceania Finals(8).
South America: $45,000 and all trips paid to WCS World Finals (3) and South America Finals(16).

Total of $512,000 in prize pool, with the WCS World Finals prize pool still to be announced.

While not as large as Valve's $1.6 million, it's still nothing to laugh at.

Whew. I thought they were going to do the crazy MLG format. Good look, Blizz.

Also important to note that League and DOTA2 are games that involve multiple people on the same team. From a raw money standpoint it looks like a lot, but per person its going to be roughly equal.

One fifth of one million is still ten times as much as you can make from an MLG championship win..

Yep, but not every Starcraft 2 players watch GSL. Therefore, some explanation about the format is needed.
