The players face SC2 players in OSL and WCS anyway, so it's not like they want to save their image. I don't get it, they're doing it backwards. I am pretty sure that competing in Code A is just a waste of time. I mean in korea even Code S doesn't get near as many viewers than OSL. Code A to OSL is most probably similar to Playhem Daily to MLG, viewer and exposure wise. Kespa players in GSL gives them more foreigner exposure because when the foreign audience likes what they see they will go and watch OSL/Proleague. The prize pool for winning Code S is no joke, the players themselves would love to get in on that. If they want to get an international audience, they will go to MLG, or other international tournaments.
Why not do both? The only answer is that Kespa is trying to screw GOM over by denying them kespa talent in their league.
GSL viewers is not a small amount in the foreign scene, MLG will get more but GSL still gets a lot.
The players themselves would never choose this, they all say in their WCS interviews that they want to play in GSL.

The irony is that as long as GOM holds the rights, Kespa cannot kill GOM. Only thing that Kespa could do it get the broadcasting rights to OGN, which in turn shuts down gom, cause OGN will shut GOM down is possible.

So the teams and players could decide for themselves. well kespa is teams Well, my problem with Kespa is that I don't think one association should decide for all the teams (which is what's happening now). If you look at the "Gom" teams, they each decide on their own if they want to do partnership with foreign teams, participate in tournaments and such. So I think it's something in the structure of Kespa that's encouraging this "we decide for all our members" policy. I don't think that's very good for esports. So yeah, I think it would be better for the scene if the BW team regained their independence. No, the teams are kespa. It is an association of all pro teams.

With LoL taking over as the most popular esport, this is a suicidal move for the general sc2 esports scene. Kespa don't have the broader picture in mind.
Might this have to do with the WCS screwup where MVP and MC had to leave ? I know i'm going to watch GSL and not any Kespa stuff. They would have to hire tastosis, day[9], wolf, khaldor and have lag free hd streams to convince me to watch them instead.

Shrewd move by Kespa. Get GOM players to play in OSL to grow their foreign audience and to give their first SC2 tournament more legitimacy, then hold out their own players from competing in GSL.
When Kespa see that their players are already competitive I would not be surprised if they made it harder for GOM players and teams to participate in their tournaments, if not bar them completely.
Complete balls that they are doing this, but it is an intelligent albeit cutthroat business move. And while I hope that no one decides to boycott one or the other ("omg Kespa is ass I won't watch OSL" or "no Kespa players in GSL? nvm"), I really hope Kespa starts caring about their image more.

I think KeSPA is trying to unite fans by making a public enemy of themselves. This is a brave act of self-sacrifice.

I am still not sure if I am going to watch. I will for sure give it a chance, but if the streams and/or casters have issues, fuck it. I am much more vested into the GOM/Independent teams and players than the Kespa people, at least for now.

KeSPA and OGN are not stupid, GOM is their competitor and they don't want to give them their greatest asset - the broodwar stars.
I fear the day where OSL and GSL are on at the same time and I'll need to decide which one to watch.
OSL will be free 720p (most likely?) with Moletrap & DoA and the best KeSPA and best GOM players. GSL will be free 240p with Tastosis and Wolfdor and the best GOM players.
Not an easy decision.

The reason is pretty simple actually.
HOTS will be released in next year, which is 'soon'. Well, it has a higher chance of real 'soon' instead of blizzard 'soon' according to latest information.
When HOTS is live, KeSPA players will have more 'equal' chance with GSL players since the game strategy will go through a huge revolution. In this revolution, KeSPA players may catch the level of GSL players very fast.
Currently KeSPA players is good, they can win games against GSL players. But in real GSL season battle, they have little chance to make it to code S. Most will be eliminated by code A qualifier, some left will only past 1-2 round of code A at most. Remember the case when foreigners (idra, huk, naniwa, thorzain) win a lot of games against GSL players in foreign tournaments, after coming to the GSL studio for a real GSL season, they hardly win any game. This is the brutal part of GSL. Players are just so focused and so prepared in real season, they are so good.
There is only 1 GSL season left for this year. KeSPA want to delay as much as possible in WOL tournaments and maybe this is the last WOL GSL tourment left. Without participation, most ppl (Korean ppl mainly) may have a high chance still believe KeSPA players are shining stars and superior to GSL players.
Basically, what KeSPA need is delay the participation using any kind of excuse until the HOTS tournament is live. Trying to keep their players marketing value. Cant blame them for doing so. But it's really a dick move and hurts gomtv a lot.

Kespa want to kill GOM again.. Kespa killed GOMTV leauge in former day using their unilateral power. Kespa do not want to grow GSL more than their clout. So Kespa prohibit their player to GSL

KeSPA is just trying to protect their league here. GSL is for GOM players and Proleague is for KeSPA players. I understand the decision from the business point of view. As a fan I would love to see a single league with all the pest Korean players in it, this time will come eventually because you can't have two parrallel leagues forever. Maybe when HotS comes out.
GOM players already play in OSL and WCS with KeSPA players. That's good enough for me now. I hope to see them in foreign tournaments too.

One of the things I'm doing is looking at the two from a foreign consumer's perspective. KeSPA has so much tied up in local broadcasting and sponsorship, where GOM is built a lot more around the paid subscriber model, a large chunk of which is foreign money. The fact appears to be that GOM needs the foreigners to thrive more than KeSPA does, which I would say is a huge reason for us to continue supporting GOM.

GOM sure likes to stir things up. Alliance players have more to win being in OSL than KesPA players being in GSL.
It's called priorities.
Proleague always goes first. The four teams in the playoffs are going to be training tirelessly to win the most prestigious championship there is. The teams that are not in the playoffs are going to train tirelessly to up their game and be ready for next season. There is a reason why Woongjin is so much stronger than SKT and KT in SC2 this season: they didn't slack off as the other teams were in playoffs. Proleague does take a lot of work, even at the expense of OSL.
OSL goes second. It is *the* most prestigious individual tournament out there, BW or SC2. This is the tournament with the most legacy and the highest title any player, Korean or foreigner, can win. The fact it was a BW tournament does not make it less prestigious today.
This is the nature of having corporate sponsors providing a relatively stable livehood and salary. KeSPA is the sponsors. A team league win gives the sponsor a lot of exposure, and this is Korean corporate sponsors in a Korean league. It's a completely different business model than how the foreign scene works, which is still stuck on advertising to the gaming niche.
Anything else is secondary. GOM classic was exhibition. STX cup was exhibition. For all intents, WCS and MLG are exhibition. GSL, if it happens, will be exhibition. Don't delude yourself thinking that KeSPA expanding makes the foreign audience and events as important as Korea. Exposure and exhibitions are good, but the foreign scene is not the market.

You know it would be epic if they did stay separate, but then held like a Super Bowl of the winners from both leagues, but the fact here is that they are not remaining separate, they opened the OSL to Independent/GOM players, but closed GOM to their players. That is where the real issues come into play. As for seeing them in foreign tourneys, we will have to see what MLG allows in NA and who is willing to pony up cash for Europe for them.

Still watching but it could have been oh so much more awesome to watch. I think what KeSPA wants is for the KeSPA players to enter into the GSL and dominate.

gj kespa luring the gsl players into osl while acting shady about their intention of participating in gsl
basically everyone expected them to play in these qualifiers, every kespa player expressed their wish to participate in them and now this absolutely dick move
especially after what came out of the meeting on may 2nd this year, one had hopes that both organizations would work together
|
This is disappointing, but i'm not at all surprised
|
I somehow get the feeling that Kespa is forbidding the players to participate in the GSL so that the OSL will gain an upper hand in the competition, as the OSL is not the only league with both GSL and Kespa players.
Also, note that "GSL player" means a player who happened to participate in the GSL and "Kespa player" means a player whos every move is controlled by Kespa.

Kespa's gonna Kespa. Not surprised at all, they always manage to screw things up one way or another.
