freedom of speech is important. so should trolls doing everything they can to harm someone's reputation, finance and emotion be allowed with no consequences?

intentional trolling with means to do damage, isn't freedom of speech.

did you believe what the troll said?

i agree jessica overreacted but as she said, its a re-occurring problem and she wanted to act upon it.
and the korean law does allow punishment for such acts.

I completely agree with this.

The amount of hostility found on the internet is becoming absurd and it's about time people are held accountable for their actions. Contrary to popular belief, simply brushing hate messages aside by labeling it "rage" or "trolling" does not make it any more acceptable.

Although, I feel that the community might be more receptive to this whole suing ordeal if it wasn't Jessica who is doing it...

It's kinda funny tho, community defends the dude for calling her a whore / slut or whatever yet lynch orb for saying "nigger". This community is fucked.

It's not at all funny or witty observation. Was Orb sued or sent to jail?

I'ld saying losing his job and any rep he had in the community was quite substantial so yeah both cases are relevant, your argument ... not so much.

he didnt really lose much of his rep, the community was pretty divided between people who didnt like him and people who did so id say the majority have pretty mcuh forgotten about it with that punishment so all he really lost was a job of an undisclosed salary (if he even got one)

See what I did there? This guy knew the law, he knew the risks of what he was doing, and he went ahead and did it anyway. He wanted to insult Jessica THAT badly?

Agreed. Similar lawsuits against people trolling on the internet has happened countless times in SK before.

Heck, even KT almost sued someone for flaming Flash.

These things are serious business in South Korea, and these people should have known better.

That doesn't mean the law is right. I mean come on, would you argue against someone who is fighting a racist or misogynistic government who enforces the law in kind? "But that black person should've known better than to sit at the front of the bus...the country has laws for segregation and she should obey them." I think we should all be able to agree these status quo kinds of statements are void in this argument and serve no purpose.

It is right, if the law makes people be less dickery and have higher class it helps the image of the community as a whole, I can't believe all the people defending this crap. Have you not learned your lesson on what happened to the fighting game community?

If we've reached the point as a society where we need the law to stop people from hurting other people's feelings, I'd say something has gone awry.

If we've reached the point as a society when people are allowed to be dicks as much as they want, I'd say something has gone awry.

I disagree. You should be able to act the way you'd like. Punishments shouldn't be serious for offending people with harmless words.

I disagree. People should be expect to act with a minimum level of class, and be punished if they act with lack of it. People should strive to be higher and higher class. These acts of lack of class shouldn't be tolerated and should be punished and made an example of.

Yes, and you can sue them so they learn their lesson and stop being dicks rather than have them make new accounts and continue being dicks to you or to other people.

People need to learn to have some class, hopefully this will make an example of those who lack it.

The fact that you honestly think people should go to prison over meaningless words typed over something as impersonal as the internet baffles me. Should everyone that says "fuck you" to someone get arrested too? Just throw 90% of the world's population in prison if so, because they don't have "class."

why do the people of "higher class" have the right to force there views and beliefs on us "lower class" people?

thats the weird thing about america...for any controversial issue, some people dont care, some people like it, some people hate it but in the end, it doesn't effect the person in question very much.

its veeeery different in korea.

hence why there's a law to protect people from trolls in the first place.

sometimes i get the feeling some of the Americans are so brainwashed with the whole freedom of speech, that every excrement that comes out in form of toughts from their brains is considered valid, and you don't actually have to think before you speak, because even if you are so bloody wrong, you have the right to be wrong.

which is false.

there was a discussion on TL similiar to this one, where guy from Scandinavia that lived on both continents analyzed the situation and said it fascinated him how in Europe kids are thought to be critical in thinking, while in the States everything is so emphasized on the individual, kids just grow up thinking every aspect of their individuality is so precious that they are actually rewarded for having a stance on something, no matter true or false.

Why should people be forced to act the way you want? Fuck that shit. Freedom of thoughts and words are incredibly important to a working modern society. We don't need a world of boring politically correct drones.

A lot of stuff has gone terribly awry, so that's not really an argument against these laws

For the record there are laws like this in the US too, in particular emotional abuse against children is a crime, as it should be.

TBH, I really don't see the point of defending free speech in these situations. It's not like any sensible person wants to reserve the right to be a complete dick. Even if there's no legal barrier the downside is massive. You might end up acting like this in the wrong environment and you're fucked (see orb). So I guess it's either a fear of a slippery slope where legitimate ideas get banned or a weird fetish for the abstract idea of free speech.

Exactly what I was thinking. Definitely Jessica being Jessica. When the problem can be solved with a click of a button but isn't its obvious that someone is seeking drama. However, I don't know why anyone would say that to her, she is such a cutie <3

This happens all the time in Korea, it may seem harsh to us people outside of Korea but this shit is taken VERY seriously in Korea. Especially with celebrities

Don't worry the guy isn't going to go to prison. Most of the time the way these things go is that the troll is apologetic and says he won't ever do it again and it gets settled out of court.

So I guess it's either a fear of a slippery slope where legitimate ideas get banned or a weird fetish for the abstract idea of free speech.

i'm happy with this, these trolls need to be shut down one way or another, this is just pure disrespect, abusing internet because you think you can say anything behind your computer.

and I'm pretty sure this guy knows Jessica's personality, even pushing that is just pure retardation.

When you can't handle someone, you give away your power to them. And that puts you in the victim role, which is a role with no silver lining. being a "victim" requires that you accept that role by an "offender".

See what I did there? This guy knew the law, he knew the risks of what he was doing, and he went ahead and did it anyway. He wanted to insult Jessica THAT badly?

If we've reached the point as a society when people are allowed to be dicks as much as they want, I'd say something has gone awry.

You can ban people from chat rooms.

Then they should strive to have better class.

Let's throw jessica's action aside for now.

Now let's see, it seems like many of you are supporting cyber defamation and think it's the norm, it's ok, it's the right thing to do. but now is it really?

Maybe it's the immaturity of the community, and tolerance for a lack of class that gives gamers stigmas and make scenes struggle to take off?

Have you considered all the good things that can happen if some of you acted that you are actually against having no class rather than supporting it?

Do you all consider the consequences of supporting cyber dickery as a community when you open your mouth at all? ( or typing shit on a forum in this case)

freedom of speech is important. so should trolls doing everything they can to harm someone's reputation, finance and emotion be allowed with no consequences?

intentional trolling with means to do damage, isn't freedom of speech.

sometimes i get the feeling some of the Americans are so brainwashed with the whole freedom of speech, that every excrement that comes out in form of toughts from their brains is considered valid, and you don't actually have to think before you speak, because even if you are so bloody wrong, you have the right to be wrong.

which is false.

there was a discussion on TL similiar to this one, where guy from Scandinavia that lived on both continents analyzed the situation and said it fascinated him how in Europe kids are thought to be critical in thinking, while in the States everything is so emphasized on the individual, kids just grow up thinking every aspect of their individuality is so precious that they are actually rewarded for having a stance on something, no matter true or false.

A TL user from Scandinavia. Sounds like a bloody expert to me. I think you could read over your own words, and perhaps learn about yourself from yourself.

Well, someone has to set a precedent. Good luck to her, bad luck to him for being the straw that broke the camel's back.

"Freedom of speech" doesn't allow you to constantly throw out mindless insults.

The guy is an idiot and hopefully he gets a cautionary fine or whatever and some others wise up.
Did you ever say Yes to a single joy?
