To be honest, Koreans have a different approach to internet. Because Koreans have to use their "citizen id #" online, people treat online interactions just like real interactions in the real world.

As such, if someone was literally coming to the SlayerS house and saying these things to her face, would you guys be as sympathetic?

Obviously Jessica is an overreacting and oversensitive person, so the troll on the other side obviously knew he was playing with fire, so full props to him: he got what he wanted. Congrats to him!

If you're going to use a real life analogy, you have to use mail. Like the things people used send to each other in envelopes. Because before the internet, that's how you would send messages to people.

Sending a message is not the same thing as going to someone's house and yelling at them.

How do you think me sending letters threatening to rape a woman would be treated?

She's suing him for "cyber defamation," not threatening bodily harm. Stop conflating the issue.

So words written on paper are how much more bodily than on a screen?

There's clearly a language barrier issue here. She is, at least according to the OP, suing this guy for "defamation," not "threatening to injure her."

dude, at least read the OP

"cunt, fucking suck my dick, I'll bang you, etc."

Ahaha you just made yourself look silly. Read that part of the OP again. It says the words on the screen shots were blurred out so the author of the OP "thinks" that was what was said. From this OP, we don't actually know if there were any threats of bodily harm. If there was, then I think she is completely justified in suing this guy. We don't know if there were though.

do you think it would be blurred out if it was about bunnies and ponies?

people don't usually go to these lenghts for random insults, just saying...

No, but what I mean to say is that it could be blurred out just for the nastiness of the words. That does not mean, however, that the words included threats of bodily harm.

This is a very important distinction, at least from my perspective because bodily threats are unacceptable and should be punished by the law. Anything else, in my opinion, should not be punished. As I have said in a previous post, this comes from an American "free speech" perspective. Thus I must acknowledge my bias in this matter.

don't worry your American propag... "free speech" perspective is imprinted in minds of most western cultures, including my own. and while i agree with you wholeheartidly on that issue, i base the whole thing on the assumption that you just don't sue somebody if those blurred out parts weren't "something else"

zzz. Jessica acting like a child yet again. I don't want to insult her or bash her but I have yet to hear anything positive regarding Jessica. At the very beginning many perceived her as a caring, nurturing mother for team SlayerS. Now she seems more like the annoying mom at PTA meetings that finds everything offensive. Wasn't she a TV actor before hand? Shouldn't she be used to having people talk about her, good or bad?

he didn't have poor insults with that in mind.

First, you don't know that.

Second, it doesn't really matter what specific words he had in mind when writing this. It applies to everything you could possibly say. You can't pick and choose which words you want to apply this idea to.

One exception may be threatening bodily harm. This is illegal in my country, and I think it should be.

Volatire. Apparently #1 supporter of sexual harassment online.

Sure, and any other terrible awful words you can think of that might be said or written.

x10000 points to you sir. I think it's because White Guilt doesn't expand to Sexism. Gotta make sure you're not racist, but you can call chicks cunts and be overall douchey and actually down right threaten to rape her. Either that, or it's because he was a viewer in the chat, and so he's more like one of us then a caster. Don't ever wanna be responsible for what we say in chat, oh no.

I think there's something to say that he could get 7 years in prison or 10 years on probation. Obviously Korea cares a lot more about this then places like America like to think they do. So maybe her suing isn't as "bitchy" or a "over-reaction" like we like to think it is.

Either way, dude had to have known who he was talking to. If there's one person you don't threaten to rape in chat, it's Slayers_Jessica.

Maybe she figures it's easier to sue one idiot than to ban 20 every week.

It's a complete non sequitur to sue someone or send them to jail. Banning is the only appropriate action.

She's not sending anyone to jail. Only the courts can do that.
BTW, not sure how it's a non sequitur. A non sequitur is a statement that has nothing to do with the argument at hand.

+1

People need to understand the OP is stating the HIGHEST possible sentence IF HE'S EVEN FOUND GUILTY.

Geez. I'm with Jessica on this. Good for her.

You're free to sue anyone for the most trivial things, it's for the courts to say whether or not you have the case and if not severe to warrant anything serious, order a simple settlement.

The paper he wrote that famous quote in contains plenty of explanation for why he believed that. Have you read it? It's not just a witty saying. It's well supported, I would argue.

In a thread created just the other day, we saw a girl commit suicide due to being called a slut by being on a "banga" (or something similar, if I don't remember correctly) list. There is a real problem with some people mercilessly attacking others verbally, even though the attacker may be resistant to similar attacks aimed at him/herself, there really is no excuse for such behavior. Honestly I think that some people take their perceived online anonymity too much for granted, and simply trying to illicit a response from someone else through baseless insults doesn't give one a right to attack someone else.

It's the law in korea. If you have the right to sue someone for doing this then I see no problem with it. Maybe it will teach Korean netizens not to "troll" so much. Also, the courts decide if the netizen went overboard with his comments. I don't see the problem with making people follow the law when they are openly breaking it while trying to stay anonymous.

PS. If the person was like "fuck u!" it wouldn't have been a big deal but the person was going on and on with the insults.

Punishing trolls is commonplace in Korea. Even MC sued 3 guys on a Starcraft 2 community for insulting his girlfriend last year.

I'm well aware of the philosophy of freedom of speech, and I'm all for it; this, however, is a matter of defamation and/or threats, which is beyond the realm of freedom of speech. Even America has this distinction.

they teach korean children better values than empty sayings that you can use to exhonorate yourself from any responsibility later on.

instead of looking down on korean culture (which you very obviously do), you should learn from it.

Then you should probably at least have 1-2 lines summarizing it. No offence but just quoting a line like that is akin to other people replying to threads by linking to another guy's article with a cheeky "I'll just leave this here". Not everyone is gonna bother reading Voltaire just to forward this discussion.
