If there was ever something "killing eSports", then it was to make people pay for content. Look at League of Legends: It's free and TONS of people play it with a rising tendency. Same with Lord of the Rings Online (I think it was): after they switched from obligatory payment to making it free with additional content you could buy, they made much more money than before. Look at how the SHOUTcraft Invitational grew by nothing but ad revenue and the support of the community. It is a great example of how the community loves this game: So much that they pay for it without having to. There are people who just can't afford paying for a stream - at least not on every tournament they want to watch. Like kids or people from poor countries. Then there are the people who are new to eSports and want to have a peek. They surely will be deterred by having to pay for a nice stream. I can't believe you actually want them to charge for HD. If you want to give them your money, you can always donate, you know?

Wish they'd charge something for HD, but should be great nonetheless. The tournament would be better for you if you had to pay for it? What kind of elitist crap is that seriously? You enjoy it more if only the true defenders of e-sports can watch this? I'm guessing you're one of the people who believed Sundance when he said PPV was needed for e-sports or it could not grow anymore (despite Dreamhack and most other tournaments completely disagreeing). You where fed a lie so MLG could make more money, and you turned it into a devout belief. Good job man, show us that corporate indoctrination is still a serious problem. You're not too smart, huh? These companies like Dreamhack do NOT make as large of a profit as it SHOULD. (Or even a profit at all, probably) if you like something, PAY FOR IT. If a large profit is made from making quality productions, we'll get more of them. Period. Obviously you don't know much about how DreamHack is run. They have a different business model than IEM, MLG, etc. DreamHack is the world's largest LAN event. They make a shit ton of money off of their events from all of the BYOC competitors that come. Competing for pro players in the LAN is also not free. Saying that DH doesn't make a big profit (and even saying they don't make any) is so incredibly false... It's not JUST a competitve esports event. It's more like a festival with concerts, thousands and thousands of gamers in one room playing under one roof. Don't call someone not smart when obviously you don't know much about DH.

Only thing that changes is some non-swedish locations so think it's unfair to call it "the MLG of Europe" as it's very different from it. The closest to that title would be IEM, despite its lack of open offline qualification.Seems like theyre just morphing into the MLG of Europe with the diff stops, open bracket system, etc. Either way, sooo awesome ! If you want to give them your money, you can always donate, you know? You give your example of LoL being free and making money etc etc.. But they made money by providing ADDITIONAL bonuses ontop of the game. Think of it like that: Free steam = low quality, if you want bonus quality, you pay for it! Your example of the SCI doesn't weight much. SCI is an online tournament, not a LAN event. I doubt the whole SC2 community can 'pay without paying' for a venue and all the legal shenanigans that come with it, staff costs, production costs, not to mention, for example, TB's time he has to spend on actually organizing accommodation, stream scheduling, booths and a safe play area. Not to mention the physiological effects of stress and anxiety of planning such an event. You make it sound as if you're not actually going to be able to watch DH with your sentence structures, I personally feel like I am cheating DH when I watch their free HD. This isn't killing E-Sports, it's putting your money into something you love so that something can strive. If asking people to pay for additional benefits is a way to put your money into something where you get something immediately back from, then I don't see why not. Stop acting like a spoilt brat. If people don't have money to pay for a HD stream then they probably don't have enough money to pay for an internet bill that can support a HD stream. If you're a kid and you can't convince your parents to pay for it for you, then guess what? Who's fault is that? Yours. Show them you have a passion for it, show them it's not a waste of money to you. I think you, of all people should be the last person to tell someone how to spend their money as well, quit being that little kid that wants everything to be the same, always.

Dreamhack AB (AB is Swedens version of Ltd) just about broke even 2008, and in the red numbers 2009 and 2010. So saying they make "shit ton of money" is a bit of an overstatement.
