That's not intention that's context.

It really seems like you don't understand what these words mean.

You're right. But you're the one who's saying that regardless of intention, when "hurtful" words are uttered, they're always racist. You said something racist, but you didn't mean it, as we can pick up from context. The context, though, shows your intention.

We can do the same thing with what Orb said. With the context*, we can figure out that he used the word "nigger" as an interchangeable meaningless shell of a word. That's how we know not to get offended by you talking about how jews are ruining the world. You said those words but you're not antisemitic.

Edit: it was a mess, sorry

No, I didn't.

I understand the point you're trying to make but it happens to be entirely irrelevant in this case. Orb wasn't speaking of the word, he wasn't quoting somebody. He was using it himself as an insult.

So despite little misunderstandings, you understand what I'm trying to convey, let's build on it.

I call my friends "faggot" all the time as a friendly gesture. It's immature and stupid, I'm sorry - but I don't think it's despicable or anything like that. It's this little poke at them, meant as some friendly derogatory label. If I were drunk and I was feeling very playful, I may call one of my friends a "nigger". It could hypothetically go like this: "Haha Matt, you're such a nigger!". And yet I'm not racist or homophobic, quite the contrary.

I'm not quoting anybody, and the context doesn't let you know what my intentions are. Am I expressing hatred of black people and homosexuals, or am I just goofing or expressing anger in general? In this case, "nigger" can be used as a general derogatory label, used simply for its offensive value. The fact is, you can't tell if Orb is racist or not. I don't think he is.

So we're punishing someone because of vocabulary when the thing which truly damages society is racism. Not fucking harmless vocabulary.

Intention is absolutely irrelevant. You can't go on about how the Jews control everything and are ruining the world and then say "I didn't intend to be anti-Semitic". When you call someone a racist term, especially as an insult, you are being racist. It doesn't matter whether you're actually a racist or not.

I don't get beaten up, because everyone knows i'm "that white boy". It's understood that i'm not some type of racist. Nigga is used as a synonym for bro, friend or anything else endearing. Obviously it can be used in a negative connotation, but many of you who are offended by the word for no practical reason (besides what it USED to mean) come across as butt hurt kids who have never actually had black friends.

Wow... just wow. You begin by stating that there is a distinction between 'nigga' and 'nigger' and then you act as if there isn't one. Those people you're responding to specifically said that you would get attacked for ending it with an 'r', not an 'a'.

obviously there is a difference between the two, i'm mainly just frustrated with people that don't grasp the difference between them. It's late, and i guess my reply was giving mixed messages. I do not say nigger, unless i'm joking around with my close friends, since we make fun of each others races a lot. As i said, Orb saying nigger on a random stream is stupid, but i don't agree with nigga/er is some taboo word that should never be uttered no matter what circumstance.

It doesn't matter whether you personally want to use it as a general insult or not, the fact is that it has never been and is not now considered a general insult by the massive majority of the population. That is how language becomes defined. A couple of immature morons throwing a racial slur around does not change its meaning.

Calling people 'niggers' is racism, no matter how hard that is for you to get through your head.

You realize the majority of the community in SC2 only watches tournaments and doesn't keep track of pointless drama right?

Do you really want a survey done to prove this? Odds are those who don't answer the survey are going to be those exact people who don't give a fuck, like myself.

We're a bunch of gazelles, trembling in fear because of a word. It's unusable because of this big, arbitrary taboo that this society built around it.

You're so shallow that you don't define people by their feelings and their sentiments, instead you define them by their vocabulary. Casting was a job for Orb.

Walk into your job and start swearing/using racial slurs, see how long you are employed. Especially in a position where you will be representing your entire company. Good luck keeping your job.

I dont want to get into a debate about the psychology of words and their connotative and denotative meanings, but I just think it's one of those things, where if you want to be a representative or voice of an organization you have to remember that in all of your actions, because people will look for moments of weakness or reasons to remove you from your position.

IDK I think it sucks for Orb cause it happened before he had the position, but at the same time Evil Geniuses revolves around maintaining their sponsorships and keeping their sponsors happy, and they cant afford negative attention that might cost them their livelihood.

Agreed with post above mine. +1

But that is the thing that most people like you do not get. Orb did not walk into the job and start using racial slurs. He used one on his private stream, way before he was ever affiliated with EG.

Frankly he should be looking into hiring himself a lawyer and suing EG for breach of contract and wrongful dismissal.

No, it's because that word had actions that followed it. Very violent actions during a violent time for a person of a specific race. Therefore, it's only use is for being disrespectful to that certain person.

And the thing that people like you do not get is in these types of employment cases, it will not matter. Your past actions previous to employment, if they are made public and can be substantiated, can absolutely lead to dismissal from your current job. There is no breach of contract and no wrongful dismissal. Wrongful dismissal/termination is a specific legal concept (not going to explain), and frankly, I don't see what legal right is being violated or why the dismissal is wrongful. I'm not sure why people think otherwise. You think EG's employment lawyers or consultants didn't ok this before it went through?

I add this only to give my own thoughts. Obviously, there seem to be strong emotions surrounding this issue. so: I think Orb is a great caster and his dismissal is a huge overreaction. I dislike the current preoccupation in America (and maybe elsewhere?) with words, not actions. I don't care what word people use. My initial reaction was to boycott EG events, but I realized I would cave eventually : ) Bottom line: I wish everyone would just relax on these sorts of issues. I realize this is not likely.

Of course you think the dismissal is a huge overreaction you even said yourself "I don't care what word people use". The situation isn't about "you" or what "you" think. It's about a racist word which Orb used and was fired because of it. He could have avoided using that word and there are a million other words Orb could have used in it's place but he chose that specific word especially when the sentence didn't even make sense.

Orb: "you ain't your nigger tactics".

Really?

And did you seriously just say "boycott" EG events? Seriously lmao stop being so damn dramatic. What EG is doing is trying to help the growth of SC2 by hosting "PROFESSIONAL" events with a "PROFESSIONAL" staff. If you don't fit the bill then your out.
