I'd venture to bet the people who really raised hell and contacted sponsors and the NAACP were previous victims of Orb's rage.

First post is all about "we dont get big money from Orbs work so we will kick him and tell everyone that we are against racism - nice PR for us!", and if some of EG's players will talk something bad nothing will happen - because EG get big money from their players work. Idra's BM is amusing. Ultimately, it's all hate towards the game, though. He hates SC2, and makes no attempt at covering it up. Orb's BM was just dumb.

When IdrA was first contracted by EG, he was widely considered to be one of the top foreign players in the world. This is all the back towards the end of Beta, I believe.
Orb is a caster.
It's a double-standard for players and casters, yes. But even strictly as a player (nevermind IdrA's popularity, or 'brand') he did (and still does) contribute value to the team due to his high skill level.

you don't seem to have any understanding of how businesses work. EG and their sponsors don't want to be associated with this kind of racist behavior, so they fired him. it doesn't matter if you think it was a mistake or what, it's not even close to a mistake for that one simple reason. I am actually pretty well versed in how businnes, pr, and etc work. It had nothing to do with the behavior and much more to do with people going straight to the sponsors before EG even had time to act or determine anything on their own. Reddit did not like hearing "we'll keep a tight leash on orb but we beleive him" and took a step that I feel damages us way more than it could ever possibly help us. What sane business is going to invest in a team where this kind of backlash can be drummed up? What sane person is going to put themselves out there knowing that the community will rip them to shreads if they are bored, in the name of internet flash mob mentality? But keep on thinking this has 0 impact on how the entire SC2 community is viewed, this was an entirely cut and dry decision and there will be no far reaching impact or consequences, and I'm the one who has no understanding of how business works. *EDIT @iloveAthene -- Precisely my point, he was extremely good as a commentator, and really proed it up when he was representing EG, or working a tourney. He was talented, entertaining, and everything that we wanted in a caster, but we had to dig up every skeleton in the closet in our quest to bring him down.
The sad part is that it only takes one guy in the community to paint the target now, and if enough followers on the internet have the time, they will dig up everything, if not for caring just out of sheer boredom and available time. And with how this incident was dealt with, if I was a pro gone caster I'd just clear my VODS of ladder play in case just one time I said something that could be taken the wrong way, and instead of talking to my coach about it, the community goes to my sponsor.
What kind of precedent does that set for potentially up and coming casters who may have previously had rage issues? It just denies us the opportunity to have a good caster (something a lot of people thought orb was, not a good player).

alex sure loves to write. i have to say that i do think that going after the sponsors was bad by the community but EG should not have been affiliated with orb in the first place. he was a radioactive personality in the beta and people like to conveniently forget that fact once he casts NASL.

^This is how I feel about it.
When you throw rage fits sprinkled with racist terms you make a lot of enemies. Having a lot of enemies has a tendency to bite you in the ass when it hurts the most.

IF Orb was black, then this wouldn't have happened. Oh the double standard.
|
If you're going to have fans, represent an organization and take a paycheck, then you need to present yourself as a professional. If you're reading this and arguing the semantics, stop and learn from it. If your employer finds that you use racist terms in any context (doesn't matter if you said it while on the job or in a tape recording, this is the 21st century there's a million ways to get caught), you will be fired.
No organization out there is going to side with the people saying that "it's just a word, etc.." when they are losing business because of these actions. It's not a hard decision, it really isn't. You don't neglect a large percentage of your market to support something being construed as "unprofessional".

You're right, IF Orb were black he probably wouldn't have used the word "nigger" to insult someone.
Maybe would've said "faggot" instead
edit: maybe "nigga I'll fuckin kill you" but that's different than saying "you dumb nigger"

That doesn't leave me with a sense of fairness. Because for every offended ladder player, who apparently managed to really get offended instead of having fun at Orb's vulnerability to lose his composure so easily over something so small - like so many have teased him about since beta - but for every such player, there are potentially hundreds of viewers who are robbed of very high level game analysis in a SC2 cast. Or was it their "karma" too?

SCENE: Phone ringing in Orb's basement. Orb answers.
Orb: Yeah, wassup.
NAACP: Hello. Is there an "ORB" there?
Orb: Yeah.
NAACP: We've been getting some complaints about your use of racial slurs.
Orb: Wha--who's asking?
NAACP: Well, apparently, you are broadcasting a videogame and routinely berating opponents. They've been emailing us ...
Orb: I mean WHO IS THIS?
NAACP: ... complaining that you've been using the n-word as a derogatory insult ...
Orb: Will you stop being a dumb nigger and tell me who you are!?!?!?
SCENE ENDS with a helicopter crashing into the basement. Samuel L. Jackson gets out of the helicopter and kicks Orb square in the nutsack.

Are you kidding? Blacks use the N word on with each other all the time.

Doesnt it make sense that EG gives lessons to people than have there top players go around bashing players saying they will never be any good. Or take idra saying apologize for the race. If he said that to a black player or a korean player do we assume he is talking about the game or the person behind the game ????
