Funny how TL tries to score brownie points with its fans by announcing that they didn't participate in the MLG referral program. They say they had reservations with a PPV stream but then also say they're in support of MLG testing the waters of a PPV model. They clearly are trying to tailor a stance that's in line with the majority of their userbase while also not alienating MLG. It's called trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Not really.

Calendar/Sponsor threads have rules that exist objectively from the MLG/TL relationship. TL may support MLG testing new monetization methods, but that does not mean they should give MLG a free pass. They did not ban MLG, they simply subjected them to the same treatment as any PPV/Advertisment Thread. MLG opted not to pay for the advertising.

I was talking about the MLG referral program, not the TL calendar.

Is anyone going to be able to make up an LR for todays games and the rest of the tourny? I'm not sure if seeker is going to be able to or not.

Wow TeamLiquid being real melvins, stop trying to over-complicate things, writing this would have been much more honest:

"We're not happy with the PPV, so therefore we're making a statement of or dissatisfaction by removing it from the our calendar"

This is a SC2 website. If IMMvp, Nestea, and DongRaeGu and playing in a tournament, that sure as hell better be on the front page. Stop trying to have an agenda and just use common sense.

I don't agree with your assessment at all. TeamLiquid got ahead of the curve by fully explaining the decision*, provided great transparency and showed class towards MLG. Literally nothing in their post hinted at your assertion. The level I disagree with your statement is stomach turning bad. Perhaps there should be a feature in the forums to not have to look at comments from blocked / disliked users? Would save me the headache of having to read dumb crap.

*Not sure decision is the right word, since this is simply the result of following their own policies. Either way, I'm covering my bases.

Technically there is an application and it has it's own thread. Not something I would use but you might want to consider it.

Based on some of the preliminary data we're hearing from 2011 (i.e. no tourney made money), PPV is the future. What if every tourney goes PPV. Is TL's calendar really going to be empty? Isn't this the mecca of SC information?

I don't understand this. So far only the Arena event is PPV. The qualifiers were all aired free with free VODs. The Winter Championship is free. Are you seriously going to boycott MLG because they didn't want to pay to have Winter Arena listed and you disagree with them? I don't exactly agree with TL's stance, but I respect it, and I'm not going to not visit TL any more because of it.

In all honesty I don't even understand the format. I had no interest in qualifiers, its the LAN factor to me that adds excitement. I don't even know what the difference with arena and championships. I just miss having the good old MLGs that would spring up every other month... =[

Is probably the best way to show the format, the qualifiers are going to be open bracket online, I think with the RO32 for each region casted from replays, the Arena for each season will be the PPV event lan(looking for a bigger venue for spectaors in future ones), and the Championship will be the same as the MLG events from last year, free stream and premium stream + venue and audience. Spring Championship = new season where players who did well in Winter are not granted pool play in the Championship, just seeded into the next Arena. Carries on for Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall seasons.

Strongly disagree with the decision by TL.

I have paid for the subscription to watch this MLG and would love this to be in the listings so I could easily get a good idea of when it starts each day, along with all the other tournaments going.

This decision hurts MLG / big SC2 tournaments, for no real gain.

There actually is no gain in this for TL..but I guess it's their website, and their rules.

If TL staff read this...

Could this not be solved by having a list of free streams (expanded by default) and also a list of pay streams (collapsed by default with an appropriate label)?

As regular visitor to the site I would still like to see all things SC related (paid or not), and to not feature something because of site policy might mean there is an issue with policy and not the thing itself. I still respect the decision as this was what was reflected in the current rules, so I suppose this is more of a suggestion for future consideration.

Ok? So should a site like IGN or CNET stop covering any products that cost money because any reviews and coverage would amount to "free" advertising? Sounds more like TL wants a cut. So much for being a site that claims to provide "progaming news" right under it's banner. I always thought the calender was for events *period*.

1. Every tournament won't be PPV.
2. If a tournament is PPV; they will still have to go through the same procedure, i.e. pay to be advertised on certain spots of the website.

TL has no obligation to promote a stream that isn't accessible to all without an advertising fee. The only beneficiary would be MLG when TL can use that money towards it's community. As it is a community driven website and one of the biggest for Starcraft.

MLG gets enough publicity as is. It doesn't have to be on the calendar and there is more than enough discussion going on in the forums.

There will still be live coverage.

If you are paying to watch Winter Arena then you really ought to know what you paid for, i.e. the start time. Sorry but, all matches won't be the same length. You miss a match you miss a match. You can rewind on demand as they said, so it really isn't that big of a loss.

MLG will have all the streams going in HD simultaneously. They're giving you all the tools if you pay. I recommend you use them to get the best experience.

Know what you bought. Besides that, MLG have their own website too. I'm sure they would love it if you started using it.

This is more like removing a game/product from a magazine's/site's release list because the company that makes it didn't pay a fee. I'm pretty sure any legit site would come under fire for that. This isn't about if I paid for it or not and I should know what I paid for. It's about living up to your name and providing news to the community. But hey let's just arbitrarily decide a spot the community goes to for coverage now count's as advertising space. What happened to the sponsored threads forum which is neatly tucked away in the corner? Or the honking huge banner ad at the top? You are mixing advertising with coverage. That's why it's BS.

This seems much ado about nothing kind of drama that internet communities love. The majority of people who probably are interested in buying the Arena ticket have already bought it and those people don't really need to be reminded that they have to watch MLG to get their money's worth. Thus the TL decision is also sound as anyone who has paid for the event can most definitely figure out where the LR thread is and can discuss/find more information accordingly (and LR threads can have any info/date/time as stated by Hot-bid). If MLG really wanted, they can maintain a LR thread and provide all the info they want. An LR thread for a big event as MLG is as many clicks away as the calender/stream listing is.

And pretty much anyone in TL community, who is not living under a rock, knows about the MLG PPV thing and so most likely if they haven't purchased a ticket, they have made a conscious choice and aren't likely to buy one. Either way, it is not going to make or break an event as some people in the thread have been claiming and it is a reasonably sound decision by MLG to not pay for a sponsored spot considering last minute buyers would likely to be few for a 20 bucks weekend event.

Wow so, so much entitlement in this thread. The site belongs to teamliquid, and they run it however they seem best. Their sound judgement is what has helped bring the site to what it is today, yet so many people think they know better jeez. They don't owe or have any responsibility to the community, especially since this is just a community site that the staff run for fun rather than for profit. I've always liked TL's policy our way or the highway on things like this, no one is forcing you to be here.

But yes, the irony of MLG having to pay for something that used to be free is very delicious

If they don't add a LQ stream for the next event I'll be boycotting MLG because I disagree with them. I fully understand and approve of TL's choice as well, and am really sad to know that I'll be watching MLG with at best 1/10th of the people who were watching it before.

Depends on what you mean by next event. If the Arena PPV experiment is successful and they do another Arena event for Spring, then that would likely be PPV again (again, assuming PPV works this time around for them). But the next event after Area is the Winter Championship, which is just like the live events they did last year with free LQ/SQ streams.

Well, those "good old MLG" events are still happening. Winter Championship in March in Columbus, Spring in June in Anaheim, Summer in August in Raleigh, Fall in November (location TBD I guess) [source]. Arena is a separate event with its own prize pool and a way to populate pool play in the championships that isn't based on points. So it is a bunch more matches (qualifiers and Arena itself) than last year, and that's how MLG is justifying trying the PPV model for this first Arena. More content costs more.

Disagree with TL's decision here.

A calendar, is to my mind, first and foremost an information resource. It can be 'seen' as an advertising tool certainly, but why anyone would actually see what is essentially a list of events as advertising completely boggles my mind.

TL's stance seems to be that it will allow 'advertising' via the calendar so long as the user's of TL benefit by being given a free stream. (Don't think that listings for free events like Assembly aren't also advertising - their viewer numbers help attract more money via sponsors).

It's a noble goal. But I think it's misguided.

For example, the major newspaper of my capital city lists all the footy games going on this weekend, the times and where the games are being played. This information is useful to me. If I end up paying money to go to one of these games, the newspaper doesn't benefit. But nor does the newspaper ask for money from the football league to list this information. The value of the newspaper to me is not them protecting me from paying money, but from giving me a complete resource for me to make up my own mind on where I can, and whether I actually do so.

Similarly, with TL, it's value to me is as an information resource. Once the information starts to be incomplete, then it's lost it's value and I'll have to look elsewhere, taking valuable views away from this site. TL suddenly has become less useful for all those who have and will pay for events like this. What proportion of the sites users are they hurting with this I wonder?

Finally, their reasoning behind allowing GOM streams seems to be special pleading. Not only does GOM use a special proprietary player, but it's free stream is borderline unwatchable. Does TL have minimum standards for what counts as a free stream? Could MLG provide a 4x4 pixel video with sound and get listed?

Don't be mistaken. If they applied their standards consistently, GOM would be out and the community would have a fit. It's only because the majority hate MLG for the PPV model that this stance is getting a free pass.
