I don't understand this. So far only the Arena event is PPV. The qualifiers were all aired free with free VODs. The Winter Championship is free. Are you seriously going to boycott MLG because they didn't want to pay to have Winter Arena listed and you disagree with them? I don't exactly agree with TL's stance, but I respect it, and I'm not going to not visit TL any more because of it.

The qualifiers were spoiled / leaked which makes it kinda lame.
I think most people are just disappointed about it... My OCD with some things makes it so if I can't watch all of an organization's events I'm kinda done with them... So for me it's not so much a "boycott" but a mental block. Sundance whether he cares or not, certainly doesn't seem to care in interviews (he just has that personality) because he knows he's gonna get people to pay and he'll make money so people not buying doesn't matter to him, because this tournament probably has the most stars in it since TSL3. He kinda has us by the balls. If you were to ask me to pick the best players in the world the only players missing from this MLG tourney would be MMA and about 4 or 5 European players (and they are at assembly). So since I like to watch all of an organizations events and i can't watch this one (would be financially irresponsible of me at this point) I'll just have to live with not watching MLG anymore. Makes me sad, but I'll just stick with GSL

Side Note: Having people install GOM player to watch GSL is a huge favor to people because of how awesome a video player it is.

a very confusing and unfortunate situation. Team liquid remains a diamond in the rough of the internet. just when you think you've understood it and how it works something new sparkles up.

TL finds itself in a hard spot. up to now everything in esports has clicked and worked in wonderful ways. Team liquid provides information and advertisement to its rapturous audience. In exchange you give it back content to satisfy its people. This has worked till now with streams being free and open to the people but now with ppv its a lot worrying situation where this content not being provided to team liquid for free. I fear that people perceive team liquid as a news reporting site or a forum where people who are interested in star craft. but the men in red want something much more then that and I find it so beautiful. So you have on one hand mlg whos trying to see if they can monetize its product though an extreme (PPV) and on the other hand you have team liquid whos tries to understand how much what they provide is worth in the absence of a payment provided by an event (the content in a freeish format). Pride, sensible business practice, an inexperienced situation all combine to form a hard situation that forces the organizations into their positions.

Or I'm just looking into this WAY too much. I find it entertaining. 2011 was the golden summer where things grew without care or worry. 2012 will be even better I hope.

If they don't add a LQ stream for the next event I'll be boycotting MLG because I disagree with them. I fully understand and approve of TL's choice as well, and am really sad to know that I'll be watching MLG with at best 1/10th of the people who were watching it before.

You will be in small company with this boycott and neither MLG nor I will miss you.

I'd hardly call it advertising to provide a calendar slot for MLG . I'd see it as information. And as such I'd consider it as a disservice to the community not to list PPV events. In my oppinion the OP by Hot_Bid seems like a somewhat forced rationalization. If a PPV event wants real advertising they can buy a banner at the frontpage...right?

I don't like that a rather small number of people managing TL (in relation to the community responsible for the vast majority of content on TL) makes decisions for the community, which at least in theory can make or break external SC2 initiatives. A power which in the first place only is given to the management by the amount of TL users representing the majority of the SC2 community.

Not allowing PPV but allowing streams stuffed with commercials ... well they are not really free lunches either are they. But this is another discussion, I'll let that rest.

Personally I'm not to keen on the new MLG model, but I'd like a TL calendar with every event listed nonetheless. Why not let the community decide how and what they want to pay for.

In all honesty I don't even understand the format. I had no interest in qualifiers, its the LAN factor to me that adds excitement. I don't even know what the difference with arena and championships. I just miss having the good old MLGs that would spring up every other month... =[

I like the write up...I was wondering why I couldn't find it on the calendar. However...now TL will have an article about why it won't advertise the PPV MLG on its main page for a few days at least. So, in a round about way...TL is advertising PPV MLG in the forum instead of on the calendar.

I get it why and all...just thought it chuckle worthy.

Funny how TL tries to score brownie points with its fans by announcing that they didn't participate in the MLG referral program. They say they had reservations with a PPV stream but then also say they're in support of MLG testing the waters of a PPV model. They clearly are trying to tailor a stance that's in line with the majority of their userbase while also not alienating MLG. It's called trying to have their cake and eat it too.

Not really.

Calendar/Sponsor threads have rules that exist objectively from the MLG/TL relationship. TL may support MLG testing new monetization methods, but that does not mean they should give MLG a free pass. They did not ban MLG, they simply subjected them to the same treatment as any PPV/Advertisment Thread. MLG opted not to pay for the advertising.

Wow TeamLiquid being real melvins, stop trying to over-complicate things, writing this would have been much more honest:

"We're not happy with the PPV, so therefore we're making a statement of or dissatisfaction by removing it from the our calendar"

This is a SC2 website. If IMMvp, Nestea, and DongRaeGu and playing in a tournament, that sure as hell better be on the front page. Stop trying to have an agenda and just use common sense.

...

They said nothing of that sort. I think some of you ought to re-read what they said without the lens in front of you.

There is no hidden agenda here.

It's really not that complicated.

Honestly.

I don't agree with your assessment at all. TeamLiquid got ahead of the curve by fully explaining the decision*, provided great transparency and showed class towards MLG. Literally nothing in their post hinted at your assertion. The level I disagree with your statement is stomach turning bad. Perhaps there should be a feature in the forums to not have to look at comments from blocked / disliked users? Would save me the headache of having to read dumb crap.

*Not sure decision is the right word, since this is simply the result of following their own policies. Either way, I'm covering my bases.
