Confirms on Startale's Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/StarTale_SC2 My Korean is not enough to give a translate but the basic is as the topic suggests. Former Chinese Warcraft 3 Pro "MisS" Han Yi Ying (韩懿莹) joins Startale as Starctaft 2 progamer today, signing the first ever non-korean female to join a Korean Progaming Team. MisS now works for a Chinese gaming cable-TV GTV as hostess and commentator.

StarTale announces female SC2 player addition
It is no secret that StarTale.Rainbow visited China together with his girlfriend, Aphrodite, for last years ZOWIE DIVINA. Where most people think that his reason for attending the event was to support Aphrodite in her efforts to become champion, he had a different mission that has been kept a secret until now. While Aphrodite was practicing for the games, Rainbow was testing the skills of a potential new member of the StarTale family, the Chinese SC2 player Yiying ‘miss’ Han - and she passed. Yiying ‘miss’ Han was a professional Warcraft 3 player up until a few years ago where she was offered a job to become the hostess of a gaming tv show. Today she is the most famous gaming tv hostess in China, but unable to forget about her dream of becoming a professional e-sports player, she started to play Sc2, and has found time to practice every day despite of her busy schedule.
Her dedication and passion to e-sports attracted the attention of StarTale and after a series of tests, she has been offered the chance to pursue her dream.
“When I first heard of miss, I was told about a very famous hostess of a gaming program, but I didn’t know she had so much talent in game.” said Jong Wook Won, head coach of StarTale and continues, “Professional gaming is not only for males, when female players with as much talent as aphrodite and miss comes by, you have to grab the moment and give them the chance to grow their talent in the best environment. This is just the beginning, we want to help make female gaming more competitive.”
“Lots of people told me that I am stupid for giving up my job as a tv hostess to become a computer player, but how often do you get a chance to follow your dream?” said Yiying ”miss” Han, “When I got informed of this test to become a member of StarTale I was really nervous, just to get the opportunity is a dream come true. When I was told I could become a part of StarTale, it was the happiest day of my life, I still can’t believe it! I will do my best every day, in every game. This is my dream come true.”
Miss is the first female player from outside Korea to join a Korean professional team. miss is practicing very hard for her first official appearance as a StarTale player – we look forward to seeing her in action!
Make something clear here: she is still on her casting job but will contribute far more time on practicing with the help from Startale coaches, thus her position is more like what DoA is in It's Gosu.
EDIT: Remove broken image, asking a friend to translate the page. EDIT2: it seems that she plans to start full time practicing in like 2 or 3 months. EDIT3: added full translation.
So is she a part of team or something outside? She's working at a Chinese gaming cable-TV as a hostess and commentator, so what is her role or point in joining ST?
Here's hoping she does better than the other female SC2 progamers. It'd be exciting to see a female progamer win even one of the smaller well-known tournaments like Go4SC2 or Playhem.

And the reason Quantic picked up Destiny is for his skillz!

She won the latest SteelSeries Iron.lady tournament for Warcraft 3 which arguably pitted the worlds best Warcraft 3 females against each other.
Female gaming is highly recognized in China. The Zowie Divina cup had 300,000 viewers, so grabbing ladies that can compete there is a good idea for any team looking to expand their marketing. In addition, Aphrodite is having success, so I'm sure they believe that MisS can follow through aswell.

yet still 0 results or any impact or relevance to the scene whatsoever
Is she actually going to be playing competitively, or is she being brought on in more of a PR sort of way? Is she very good? I don't think I've seen her in any KSL's or anything, but that's obviously not definitive. It's a good thing either way, but I'd like to see a female invite actually playing at a competitive level to sort of break that stereotype wrong. I never followed the War3 scene, but I guess China was big into that game, so I'm hoping for good things if she was a pro there.
I guess the best thing to say here is "e-sports fighting!" :D
Also liked this quote: “Lots of people told me that I am stupid for giving up my job as a tv hostess to become a computer player, but how often do you get a chance to follow your dream?”
Yeah StartaleQuantic needs more females! Gogogo ! Well I guess Rainbow and ST coach have good eyes to see new talent so I don't worry about the future of Miss if she can practice as well as she wants.
Aphrodite has multiple accounts master in KR, with his main top10masters
Well, like the article said, she must be crazy to give up her well-paid job for that. I think Rainbow should have stopped playing instead and moved to China if the two wanted to be close.
so I'm seeing all these girls get picked up by organizations... but haven't even seen any them play or do much of anything. I guess it's a long term investment.
Is this the first non-korean player (not only female) to join a korean team? I guess the article suggest that it is the first woman ("non-korean female"), but I just don't remember about a foreign guy joining a korean team.

If a picture were to be taken with her, byun's puppy and marineking occupying the same general area, the world would implode in on itself due to the cuteness inherent.
I'm all for diversity, but it seems to me teams are signing females for publicity reasons and not for skill reasons..However, I don't know how skilled she is in sc2 but if we base if off of all the previous wc3 ==> sc2 pros...=/
Good to see another team increase its roster good luck to her and ST, seeing as how she played WIII for so many years she seems committed to gaming I hope she practices hard and plays in the GSL.
Please guys, MisS is probably the most dedicated and passionate personality I've ever seen in my esports career, despite what her gender is, she might had put so much time and life into this to make this decision and go this far, show some respect.
Tired of seeing all these mediocre females getting signed when there are better male players still waiting for a contract. Teams should sign the best player available.

What has that girl on SlayerS done seen being signed? Zero results, zero news, zero anything.. signing females is pointless.

Are you that narrow-minded? She's a e-celebrity back in China so signing her will bring IMMENSE publicity to Startale and the Korean SC2 scene to the chinese audience.

the same can be said for destiny and incontrol, so you think eg and quantic need to kick them? It is because the existence of people like you that makes getting into esports hard for females.

Yeah let's compare a female player to a bum off the street. Great start there
When Eve got signed she wasn't that good and we all know that. So maybe she's not ready yet to have good results?
Take Aphrodite who is the other female player on Startale. She won that female only tournament in China and won some showmatches and clan wars. That might not be a win in the GSL or whatever, but as you can see, a female in a team can be a good thing
Cute yo. Still, I wonder just what she brings to the team in terms of skill. All it said was she used to a pro in WC3, says nothing of what league she is in. I don't think she has ever entered any SC2 tournaments yet either so it's kind of a mystery. I mean, Eve has been in Slayers for awhile now and I still haven't heard anything about her, I wonder if the teams just end up wasting money trying to mold these girls into SC2 machines :S
Well this should be interesting. I'm pretty sure Startale didn't just pick her up for the publicity like some other teams might have with their girls, which means she has a ton of potential. I wonder how good she'll be come the end of the year.

You send a male disguised in female to "only female" tournament ? According to Rainbow and STcoach (who are not random people), she has potential and talent. So, we'll see if she can improve and do really well when training/playing full time.
Besides, using your words, there are also "mediocre males getting signed when there are better (fe?)male players still waiting for a contract".
Best of luck to her. She's going to be harshly criticised around these forums. Until females start putting up results against their male counterparts it will continue. This was probably a move on Startale's part to move into the Chinese scene (maybe alliance with a chinese team?). She will be hepful promoting Startale in China. Unknown at the moment if she's even moving to South Korea. I respect that she's leaving a comfortable job to chase her dream.
Don't be deceived guys, makeup is the only thing separating the illusion of cuteness and the horrible reality that is asian girls. They'll smack you into line.
On topic though, this does show promise. I hope all the best for her.

Why are you so shure? She's a celebrity in China so at this time the most likely scenario is that they are signing her for publicity in China.
On February 13 2012 23:00 darkscream wrote: Why don't they pickup some normal looking girls. This one is too pretty.
Because normal looking girls don't give you much attention. When one of these teams signs a girls that's physically ugly I may believe them that they are actually signing her for her skills.
Awesome! More females for e-sports please! Also, I can´t help but notice that she is very attractive, nice bonus on top of being a skilled player. Looking forward to her first appearance as a Startale player.
Oh cool :D. Even though it at this point probably wont lead to much I certainly do hope she can become a great player when she starts practicing full time! :D. (Would be neat with the SC2 version of tossgirl lol. )

...What?... Wow. Okay. Destiny and iNcontroL both have regular tournament results and regularly interract with the community, hence why you know their names. SlayerS, what was it, Eve? She does what exactly? No one knows, so no, the same can't be said. Besides, who is even talking about being kicked off a team?
The thing about Starcraft 2 is that it doesn't care what your gender is or where you're from. Anyone can win games. Anyone can get into esports and become the best player in the world. Signing female players because they're female and not because they're good is a joke. They're glorified cheerleaders.

why so much hate? id put a good sum of my money that the female players (at least aphrodite and flo) could beat destiny and incontrol handily in a bo3. sure, they contribute a ton to the community and for that we are all grateful but stop living in this dreamland that they have top level skills and then get upset because you cant handle females entering the scene. after reading the translation i think its awesome that she can follow her dream and more power to her
edit: in the end it dont matter if they are top class. this is still a business. if the bosses over at ST determine that this signing get ST more chinese followers and revenue instead of some korean GM who might win 1 tournament now and again then they made absolutely the correct decision. some of you romantics might be upset by this but it happens in every other industry

Some of you guys are just jealous, even if other female progamers aren't doing that well it doesn't mean that it's going to be the same for all of them, you call her mediocre but have you seen her play? Anyway best of luck to her.

^
Any of the signed female progamers can beat a whole lot of their male counterparts in tournaments. Talking shit about them just because no one of them has win a major one like MLG or Dreamhack [yet] is pretty low. They are quite obviously at least on the level of the average progamer. Whether they - or ANY other signed player - can reach higher than that, only time and their own effort will tell.
GSL is a whole another level of game, and 99% of the current non-korean progamers could not even win a single game there. How many non-koreans are still in the running for Code S this season? That's right, one ... in this light, demanding that a signed female progamer instantly be GSL level is beyond ridiculous.

Quite a sweeping statement to make about gender here....
I'll just have to agree with whoever she talked to. I mean, I understand wanting to follow your dreams... but you're quitting a real job for something that will leave you without a salary essentially and a small place to live shared with a dozen other players (assuming she lives in the team house... otherwise that's even worse because the money for living space would then come out of her pockets) all the while she's a player I had never heard of so she never did anything worthwhile in competitions so far.
I know this applies to a ton of other players (I really don't understand how anyone besides the top top top players decide to keep being a progamer when it really hurts their future/education/finances) but in this case she has the added "had a good job" thing going on...

I said it wasn't smart. That's true even if you want to believe in dreams. She had her other job for a while... I'm sure she would've quit it a long time ago if she didn't enjoy it somewhat.
And yes, the SC2 scene would be non-existent. I'm aware. It doesn't change the fact that it's a poor choice for a life path for 95%+ of people that choose to do it.
*EDIT : And I dropped pharmacy school after 3 years (large salary) to go back to biochemistry research (decent salary) so I know what it is to go and do something you want. But I wouldn't have went back if I made 5-10k a year in research.
I'm glad for once that people are bringing up the "b teamers" to be on par with the girl gamers. I agree with it wholeheartedly, depending on which b teamers we're talking about. They're also equally likely to have any results in the GSL.

Maybe because terran is the most intuitive race to play. Almost all RTS have a 'human' race who have buildings that poops out units. Zerg with its Hive/Inject/Creep systems and protoss with its warp ability might seem a little bit strange/difficult for people that played alot of other RTS.
It might also have to do with the story. Terrans look like heroes, fighting for good. Zerg is creepy and disgusting and Protoss are the scary aliens. ^_^
LOL. And yes, it is great that teams invite female gamers into their rosters, be it for being part of the gaming team or working for the team. Gogo Startale!

Which translates into: Probably better than 97% of all the foreigners. Love it, though. This sort of deal brings great momentum.
Clear something here: she will still on his casting and hostess job but will contribute more time on practicing with help and advices from the Startale coaches.

Do you actually know anything about this player, or what tests she went through to earn her spot? If not, how do you know how good she is relative to the "way better" teamless players? Also, she's probably being added as an B-teamer, so she probably signed for a similar deal to other players on the roster with similar results, which is prrobably lot less than the teamless players want.
Since she still sticks to her job at the same time, I don't think she will go too far in progaming, maybe one or two female-only tournaments or showmatches occasionally, but that's all I can expect now.
Kinda cool that startales now got two female players in their team. And that wakes the obvious question is this gonna make a rivaly between Aphrodite and MisS and is this the beginning of alot more female players?

Good luck to her, but not a wise decision IMO.

Newlife was a Chinese player who joined Prime during the Beta.
I remember falling in love when I saw ToSsGirL playing (and winning btw). Since then I've been waiting and hoping for more female players to enter into the professional scene, SC2 specifically, and start smashing faces! Every time I hear of another girl getting signed onto a team I get a little hopeful/excited. I hope nothing but the best for her as I'm sure it's going to be an uphill struggle to say the least.
I've still not determined what race she plays, maybe someone said it but I missed it. The Liquipedia page has a Terran symbol on it but it's not clear if that's just a placeholder or not. Would be awesome if she played Zerg XD

What has that girl on SlayerS done seen being signed? Zero results, zero news, zero anything.. signing females is pointless.
When LA Galaxy signed David Beckham he was most definitely past his prime and also they payed an absolutely RIDICULOUS transfer fee and wage.
So why did they sign him when they could of signed so many better players who wouldn't of costed as much?

same principle applies here as she is eFamous in china.
If her signing opens up more of the China scene to mainstream, this'll be great for eSports!
Edit: Here is her blog. http://blog.sina.com.cn/misswar3 It has lots of pictures. (Put some in spoiler tag below on imgur since the pics will likely disappear due to bandwidth if pinged so much)
Hm.... Name is very familiar. Didn't she play NElf?
If it's serious I don't mind. If it means more opening towards the Chinese scene I definitively don't mind either. Just hope it's not 100% for publicity. Even then, a wc3 player woo! \o/

cleveland ohio. UNDERRATED CITY! COME JOIN US!
Do you not have rent to pay for or something? 12k/yr in a developed city is well below the poverty line. I mean, minimum wage is ~18k/yr if you work full time. It just doesn't add up. You're either leaving out part of the story(you live quite comfortably on 12k/yr while living with your parents in high school), or you are just in a vast minority as far as your standard of 'quite comfortably.'

Well, Aphrodite is probably the only female progamer that is able to take on co-ed competitions as of now. She trashed Destiny fairly convincingly, defeats NA GMs more than she loses, and she does put up a decent showing on the KR ladder. I'm sure she attempts to qualify for code A, but there's no way Startale can send just a "quite good" player like Aphrodite to MLG or other foreign events. If they can't send Squirtle/Rainbow, they definitely can't send Aphrodite.
Korean tournaments are.....kind of hard. It's no surprise you haven't heard of results recently. We haven't heard anything out of Fruitdealer, and IdrA/HuK got booted out of code A with little fanfare. I suppose you just have to consider how good these pros have to be to post results other than 0-2.

That is not comparable. David Beckham may not have been the greatest soccer player in the world at that time, but he was still able to compete at the level he was signing too. He was playing in the MLS and contributing to the team. If any of these female SC2 players were able to play in GSL Code A or B or GSTL and not get rocked then I wouldn't have any problem what so ever. My problem is that they get a contract because of their SEX not because of their SKILL.

Sorry but nobody gives a shit about the MLS except Mexicans lol. Beckham is just a fancy deal to get more attention into soccer for the US viewers and LA Galaxy hope they could draw more and more ads contract.

She's 8th ranked masters on the Korean ladder and she's only been playing the game for like 6-8 months, her first RTS. I think she got to the third round in Code A in her first attempt too. Also, she wins all the female tournaments she goes too, so I'd say she's well worth the investment for Startale and not just for her looks. The new addition? No clue.

Aphrodite is pretty strong. StarTale has used her in team leagues and she's won. I really like StarTale's attitude towards females. I really don't feel like they just add any girl just for show. They actually groomed Aphrodite. She can perform well and I can't wait to see her hit up foreign tournaments.

You are the one angling it in a bad light. You should be just as upset over teams signing popular or people that have a lot of pr value (a lot of stream viewers and so on). The way the scene currently works, drawing in the viewer, getting more exposure is very important regardless of skill. A team could sign a better no-name player that no one cares about and the team would be worse off (as a buisness). This isn't about fairness. If sc2 become a legit profession (not just for the absolute best) then this will take care of itself. As it is it's a silly thing to get upset over.

The only problem in your argument, everyone knows the NA GM is pretty weak compared to EU and especially KR
No clue.
do u read the article? she was a former wc3 pro, so sc2 is not her first rts game
Do you read at all before you reply? Trying reading the quote and what I wrote, and then you might realize who I was talking about.

Aphrodite is pretty strong. StarTale has used her in team leagues and she's won. I really like StarTale's attitude towards females. I really don't feel like they just add any girl just for show. They actually groomed Aphrodite. She can perform well and I can't wait to see her hit up foreign tournaments.
so, do you think that the girls they are adding are better then some of the teamless male starcraft players?? I don't. That's not me being sexist or anything but honestly I think it is for show.
This has been discussed to death already in other threads, but yes indeed, PR and getting attention is a huge deal. Signing female players is amazing for that sort of thing without a doubt.

I don't recall Aphrodite ever being in ANY team league for ST.

It wasn't the GSTL it was some clan war against Gamania(the taiwanese team)
The only thing I hope is that these girl gamers aren't getting payed more then the males bringing in the results or at least contributing to the team. That is of course if they do neither. Otherwise, I'm all for girl gamers wanting to make their mark.
Thank Adun. At least she'll give me someone to cheer for in female only tournaments. Because regardless of nationality or gender, I've always known where my loyalties lie .

I'm sorry to say this but some of you are a bunch of douchebags, stating that she got signed just because she's female and implying that you would be signed too if you were girls, ironically you will be unable to compete against the korean pros (probably not even against NA Pros) so it would be totally worthless. I hope she brings good results and proves all of you wrong.

hmmmm well I guess her Korean is better than Seltzer so they hired HER! Hope to see more content from StarTale in the near future. She must have SOME knowledge of the game in order to provide adequate content.
I reeeaally hope that we're finally getting a female pro who can bring some results in, what is essentially, a boys' club. We keep hearing about this female recruit and that female recruit but we haven't actually seen many, if any, games that showcase their skill level.
if this thread makes any points at all its that this is one creepy ass/sexist/jealous community that im not sure i want to be a part anymore. i advise alot of you to rethink your life choices
need mroe female gamers now a days. good pick up from startale too. they seem like a team that can harbor a female pretty well. I think this will help more females step forward as gamers.
Just as exciting to see Korean teams to be signing Chinese players... there's so much talent in China, but they're still relatively isolated and not playing a whole lot in big international events. I don't have high hopes for this one, but hopefully it sets a precedent of Korean teams signing foreign players rather than vice versa.
Gm in China+previous high level esports experience definitely counts for something. I'll be astonished if she qualifies for Code A, but at least it's still a possibility (unlike a few other female pros lol).

What has that girl on SlayerS done seen being signed? Zero results, zero news, zero anything.. signing females is pointless.
When LA Galaxy signed David Beckham he was most definitely past his prime and also they payed an absolutely RIDICULOUS transfer fee and wage.
So why did they sign him when they could of signed so many better players who wouldn't of costed as much?
because he's David fucking Beckham
same principle applies here as she is eFamous in china.
So you've seen her play and you also happen to know that they signed her due to being a girl? Sure. thing. man. Stop judging her for being a girl. You haven't even seen what she's capable of.

the gamers are not? and pretty girls recieve more help from boys. So they get to know all the little tricks about wc3 and now sc2
It's sad she does stop her casting career. I think she can use her job to also learn for sc2 - "watch it learn it" making notes about timings and stuff.

Yep, thought the same. Good luck. Pretty interesting if this could maybe be a trend and more female progamers are joining teams or switiching to SC2. Well, but probably it will be an exception I guess.
Not to make a generic post about a female gamers looks.... but holy shit when I opened this thread she looked like a twig. may just be the camera angle though.
Hope she does well... and competes... I have not heard of any of the other girls competing

the same can be said for destiny and incontrol, so you think eg and quantic need to kick them? It is because the existence of people like you that makes getting into esports hard for females.
...What?... Wow.
They're glorified cheerleaders.
would you prefer sc2 be a boys only club? i have an idea. instead of having men play sc2, how about computers? lets build computers and program them to play each other at the tip top level. signing male players because they're male (non robots) and not because theyre good is a joke. they're glorified cheerleaders compared to their robot counterparts.
All that pink and girliness is a front. In reality she's a being of rage and fury capable of breaking my spine with her ring finger. I'm on to you MisSy!!!
I still play sc...but i started playing league of legneds because of the more social aspect. but that game is as boring as hell... it doesnt take much to 1) know how to read and comprehend what you just read 2) right click and 3) use keys 'q w e r d f'
too many players have the "i want to win" mindset over a "I want to learn and get better" mindset, thus resulting to increased stress.

You misunderstand a very basic concept. Male players dont get signed because they are male, they get signed because they are good.

Your opinion is sexist, ignorant, and irrelevant. In most circles, those opinions truly don't matter. You're more than welcome to try and voice it though.
Clearly the girl has talent. They wouldn't waste money on her if she hadn't. Who knows, maybe someday you'll get high enough on the ladder (you won't) to play her if she smurfs on your server and you'll get a nice warm slice of humble pie.
I'm amazed at the number of people who claim she was picked up because of her looks or genitalia or whatever, when it says in the OP that Rainbow was there to test her - presumably by playing against her. Why would they bother to send Rainbow to China and have him play against someone if they were going to add her to the team based on something else than her ability to play SC2?
You know, in many other threads, blatantly showing that you haven't read the OP gets you a warning or a ban...
Moreover, if Rainbow went to China, played against an unknown Chinese boy who subsequently got picked up by the team, would you say that because you haven't heard of him, there are obviously better players out there and he shouldn't have been picked up? Would you claim that they added him to the team because he had a dick? Would you say that no Korean teams should ever add any Chinese players at all, because GM in China is too easy, so no matter how good a Chinese player is, he'll never be good enough?
You claim that players should be chosen based on their skill. However, your reasons for bashing her seems to be: 1) She hasn't won any Western tournaments, so you personally don't know about her 2) She is a girl. The fact that Rainbow tested her skills and approved of them doesn't even figure into your equation. Now, who's disregarding skill?

Seriously. What is wrong with you?
Do people like you actually exist or are you just a really good troll?
great pickup, all teams should start adding female players in order to grow esports, its another whole untapped demographic plus im sure the existing demograhic wont mind lol. how do u get non-sc2 fans to watch sc2? recruit female players! although i hope their skills r all up par, eye candy > skills until the female scene develops further.
and of course ppl should be hired based on skill, but in the real world, skill isnt the only determining factor. sex and looks play a small but tangible part in the hiring process. better looking ppl are always gonna have an advantage and better looking girls r gonna always be able to use their sex appeal to move up, until bosses start being female instead of male.
Congratulations to MisS. Sounds like she has a solid background with WC3 and commentating. I look forward to seeing her play once she starts practicing full time with a great time like Startale. Good to see Startale continue to grow too.
---
As for you negative souls muddying up this thread, I really wish you'd stop being so ignorant and actually try to think for once. What exactly do you want? Female players to only ever be able to join a team if there is absolutely no male player who is better than them that is interested in joining the team? What do you see coming out of this? Because I see a cycle of continuously discouraging female players from SC2 competition.
You can't just take a group that has almost no presence in competitive SC2, and a minority presence in SC2 in general, and make all opportunities "equal" and then except for them to succeed somehow. The starting point is too unequal to ever expect a fair result if nothing is done to encourage/help that group.
These negative comments just come out of a complete lack of understanding of inequality issues, and history. They're akin to the ignorance you see in Women's history month threads where some people will complain "Why do we have Women's history month, but not Men's history month??? Unfair!" You're just ignorant and you have no idea what you're talking about.
Anyone who is saying that she is signed solely because she's a girl is being foolish. Also, anyone who says that she is being signed solely based on her skill is being foolish. It's a mix of both, that much is obvious. It's a great marketing piece for Startale - picking up a talented female. If she does well, they'll get a ton of attention and also will be seen as a contributor to "gender equity" in e-sports. If she fails to get any decent results, Startale STILL gets attention and is STILL seen as a contributor to gender equity. Plus, with her background in hosting, they have a great insurance plan even if she isn't good. She can be the Anna Prosser of StarTale, looking good and speaking well in promotions for the team.
All in all, a great move from StarTale even if the player in question isn't likely to give MVP or Nestea nightmares.
She's goin to be like a steak in a house full of hungry dogs.
Good on ST though, making an impact in the scene like this. There are some other fairly good Chinese women. I wonder who'll be next to hop on the bandwagon. As I could see this getting ST more popular with the ladies in Korea.
this will hopefully attract more sponsors and fans. i wonder how much longer it will take before the gigantic chinese potential will overflood e-sports (note that is not a bad thing as long as the level of competition rises)
Pro-gamer girls are always pretty because they make the effort to look pretty. Cosmetics and hairstyles go a long way. It's hard to understand if you don't have the pressure to look better than your best every time you leave the house.
As far as skill goes, if she's grandmaster in China, why isn't that good enough to get signed? There's ALWAYS someone who's better at the game, doesn't mean those who are very good, but not the best, shouldn't get signed. In any case, she fits their requirements so she got signed. When you protest that they could have signed a more skillful male player, and you don't give any specific names, you're implying that even if they find a female player who meets both skill and PR requirements, they should go look for a male player who is more skillful instead, even if he is lesser in other areas.
We haven't heard of her before this because she's in China, and when do we ever hear about anything in China? Only large global events like the Olympics, and shenanigans like when some fish ball stands wash their food in sewer water, when toy manufacturers put paint thinner in children's toys, or when pillow manufacturers try to cut costs by using garbage as stuffing. So not having heard about her doesn't mean she doesn't have any achievements, it could be that we just haven't heard of them.
