to be fair, stephano did say he would play them the next day

you guys dont seem to realize that Stephano is the real baller here because not only is he not worried about the money (nice job playing the victim card btw, ONOG. your prize pool wasn't that impressive and i don't care how hard you worked for it), but he admitted the games would have sucked because he was so tired.

if you're tired, you're tired. no rule that says you can't forfeit because of how hard the tournament organizers worked to come up with the prize money.

I think ONOG handled a poor situation in the best way possible.

If I was a tournament organizer, I might think twice about inviting Stephano (or put clauses into his contract forfeiting pay if this occurs).

Drama aside, this issue highlights the question of players and tournaments accommodating each other. I say both sides are wrong. There clearly was a lack of communication of the boundaries and responsibilities between the parties involved.

Asking a professional to perform at 2 am of his time is unreasonable. However, said player should also communicate his timeline/schedule and let the tournament know ahead of time.

Earlier in the day Stephano played in and won the SCAN Invitational (beating Grubby in the finals) and as a result requested that ONOG delay his match so he could participate.

He knows how long SC2 matches go, if it's beginning to breach when he thought he could play then he should've said that from the beginning. Asking a tournament to delay and then pulling out afterwards is completely unacceptable, imo. I don't agree with forfeiting in a finals no matter what, but to do it after making a request of a tournament is even worse.

And the sports analogies seem moot, because ESPORTS is simply not near the level of professionalism of normal sports, but it's past a point of amateurism where people actually play for the enjoyment of the game/competition. I'd just like to point out that last night in DotA 2, an Australian team played a tournament all night long and lost in the grand finals at 8:30 AM their time. The first place prize was a headset, mouse, mouse pad and last generation video card. :| They obviously didn't need to, but I respect them more for it, just like we respect athletes more for playing through injuries and sickness.

Outside of a few select players, tournament organizers really have most of the leverage here and I think they did the right thing, and I probably wouldn't invite him to a future event. This drama really is a mess, and Stephano isn't a draw like IdrA or some Koreans. If the prize money continues to be good, they'll still get a ton of good players.

User was warned for this post

This post was warned? In all honesty, I agree with ohmkerg. Perhaps he was warned because he didn't give a reason why he feels Stephano is a douche, but a negative comment like this is similar to when a user simply posts, "wow stephano is amazing." Thousands of posts are made just like this, none of which I seem to notice getting warned. Freedom to criticize, please.

Back on topic:
Stephano is completely unprofessional and disrespectful for this action. If I were Deric, I would completely disqualify him from the tournament (given him no position to speak of). And if I were Millenium, I would make sure Stephano understands the seriousness of his actions. For another, Millenium should have someone making sure Stephano does not put himself into a position where he must choose between playing two different tournaments.

This is very easily comparable to Naniwa's probe rush incident. However, Stephano actually had something to play for...

I hope Stephano continues joining two tournaments and gets to finals in both of them. He's in it for the money and he spent $1300 to sleep.. seemed like it was important sleep. Maybe he should just feign internet drop out each time so the haters don't hate.

All these posts with analogies completely fucking unrelated to the actual point of the OP. Stephano played in 2 tournaments knowing the consequences well ahead of asking to delay his match 45min to participate in ONOG. After playing and making the finals, he decided to bring up an ultimatum to the admin stating he would EITHER forfeit, or play the next day...This is after the tournament has gone through all of the logistics regarding streaming/setup/player management/getting their sponsors lined up/etc. This was simply not a situation where a player could decide something on behalf of the tournament. Not only is it extremely unprofessional to even ask, but he seemingly left the discussion without a definitive verdict reached by the tournament admins. If you have commitments regardless of what they are (in this case sleep) then put them aside when registering for a tourney under special circumstances. I can't ask for an extension from my boss then not fucking have it ready by the due date, instead texting him "I'm gonna call it a day", the tournament organizers were MORE than grateful giving him 4th place, and I think he should be further banned from subsequent ONOG tournaments.

Put it in perspective, if you want SC2 to make way into the real world of sports actions like these need to be met with punishment, you cannot play favorites simply because he is a good player, I don't understand the amount of people defending him in this thread. Being tired is not an excuse worthy of this immature, unprofessional action.

Lesson learned for invite tournaments I think, just don't invite Stephano. No tournament should invite a player that has a chance to put the tournament in jeopardy. ONOG handled it pretty well but these things should never happen in the first place, so you have to root out the source of the problem.

I think any tournament willing to invite Idra would be more than willing to invite Stephano.

I don't think you understand value of a talented 'heel' for publicity.

After all, aren't you Idra's #1 fan?

wat.

I don't think I have never posted anything about being an Idra fan. Don't care too much about him honestly and I don't think he will win in Code A tonight.

Nice try though?

I love how Idra does this every other tournament but when someone with some class forfiets, we get this huge thread about how much of a "mistake" this was. He was tired and knew he wouldn't put on a good show. Applaud him.

What? No I would not forfeit a match in the FINALS of a tournament with money on the line. No way. There is no excuse for it don't play if it will potentially "make you tired". I guarantee it most people in this thread if they were in the finals for money (let alone 1k + or whatever) they would not forfeit because they were "tired".

I would hardly say Stephano has Class. Also Idra did it what twice? Group stages of IPL3 and semi finals vs nerchio in a teamliquid open? he was talked to about forfeiting in the teamliquid open even or thats what alex said. I don't know any other times he has though especially in the finals of a tournament. That's hardly every other tournament

The more i read this kind of thread, the more i hate the "e-sports" mentality. The quest for legitimacy of "e-sports" is bane of this community, everything is blown out or proportions and everyone has an opinion on the correct code of conduct for players and tournaments organizers. I wish we were more like the fighting community: less money, more fun.

Also, 43 pages of beating a dead horse... when we already had 40+ pages on the ONOG thread?

Naniwa simply doesn't know how to behave. As a spoiled brat, he thinks he can do whatever he wants on the main stage. He can't. He still doesn't get SC2 is also a business with huge organizations and sponsors. Instead of playing the devil's advocate, people should just realize Naniwa needs to acquire something called manners and good sense. Right now, he's unfit both for a serious gaming organization as for the corporate world.

The only part I care about is this situation totally stole the credit away from Kas winning the tournament. Now it will be remembered as "that one tournament that Stephano forfeited the finals" as opposed to "that one tournament Kas demolished".

So instead of ONOG1 being about Kas winning, it's about Stephano. What.

Can't believe organizers don't have a breech of contract clause. If I were attorney for this event Stephano would pay, to retain a lawyer at least, instead of get paid - let alone 4th. Oh yeah and extremely unprofessional too.

Content for the sake of content no matter how low quality or pointless it is. It would've served ONOG much more to be flexible than to stir up drama. If IPL3 can let a whole group forfeit due to scheduling problems I think ONOG could've worked something out.

its whatever by now. I much more appreciated seeing illusion in the finals as I love watching that kid play. He is so exciting to watch and pretty unpredictable with flashes of brilliance. It was refreshing to see him instead of stephano in a final 2x in one day. Besides, Illusion was playing one of the biggest matches of his career and when you know how much is on the line for him it makes it much more interesting for the viewer.

The clear solution for this situation is for ONOG to host a showmatch between Stephano and Kas... stephano can apologize for being tired and whatnot and we can find out what would have happened. Enough people would be interested in that showmatch simply on its face to make it worthwhile.
