people live in korea you know too. just because my country is 'celestia' doesn't mean i actually live in celestia, does it?

Actually I live in New Zealand and don't have SBS, but I was just reading around Korean sites and found it.

I want to live in Celestia

There's a video here. Not much to sub actually. MMA just says he was surprised at how big the crowds were, and the news guy compares their popularity to pop stars and talk about Blizzard's profits e.t.c.. Just a lot of masturbation about how popular Korean people are (like they do about K-pop).
|
Am I right in thinking that Hallyu star is something along the lines of a korean who has celebrity-esque status outside of Korea?
I'm sure I've heard Hallyu-wave in some K-Drama before.

I see Korean news media hasn't changed much regarding how supposedly or seemingly popular Koreans are in foreign countries. Same case with the Korean Wave, K-Pop, and Korean cuisine.
But yeah, it's more talking about how Koreans are treated like "Hollywood stars" and how Korea is all dominant. Not much about Blizzcon, Starcraft 2, and the tournament itself.

I'm sure I've heard Hallyu-wave in some K-Drama before. Yeah. It's the spread of Korean culture around Asian countries, and more recently Western countries as well.

I meant because we have SBS in Australia. SBS is an international channel that has news from a lot of different countries. It is very possible that he saw Korean news on SBS in NZ, if they have it, which it turns out they don't.

sbs in aus takes its korean news from ytn. also they have literally zero in common except for being television channels and having the same initials.
|
To add to the confusion, if you are in New Zealand and have access to Freeview HD (local brand name for DVB-T), you may be able to pick up channels 41-43 which screen selected SBS shows/news and YTN (I think the YTN channel is full-time YTN). Just sayin'... d-:
Edit: And of course, SBS in Australia = Special Broadcasting Service, SBS in Korea = Seoul Broadcasting System. Again, just sayin'... They're two completely unrelated broadcasters which happen to share the initialism.

Not much about Blizzcon, Starcraft 2, and the tournament itself. I don't think it's a surprise that their coverage of SC2 esports began at Blizzcon rather than a domestic tournament. While domestically there is some shame about the esports industry (compared to physical sports), the foreign affinity for Korean esports is something to be proud of, evidently. This is actually hypocritical rather than merely self-gratituitious as with the K-pop, random Korean actors in a Hollywood movie or popular American drama etc

sbs is also special boat services so just saying.

The guy in the CJ jacket, is that Lazarus?

Starcraft was on Korean news and we're freaking out why? The broadcast wasn't even about the game, it was about how popular MMA is abroad like he's some kind of god in America. It's just jingoism.
They do the same thing in a lot of countries with a small international reach -- overhype and mislead viewers on how big their own countrymen are abroad. It happens with trivially famous Korean-American actors in Hollywood too.

SC2 is quite negligible compared to BW in Korea, so something like this is a big deal for SC2 in Korea.

Teehee I walked past that news anchor when he was filming.

Uh well, his point was that it's actually not a big deal because it was on the news for "the wrong reasons".
