The Starcraft 2 e-Sports scene just made it's debut on a Korean public broadcast on SBS's 8PM News. They aired an interview with MMA after his win. I'll try to get a video of the interview later.

Seems Koreans finally embracing SC2! Should we celebrate or be terrified?

Awesome. MMA is the man.
We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost. -Charlie Chaplin

I think most of them are surprised at how SC2's popularity has exploded so much internationally.

Actually I live in New Zealand and don't have SBS, but I was just reading around Korean sites and found it.

There's a video here. Not much to sub actually. MMA just says he was surprised at how big the crowds were, and the news guy compares their popularity to pop stars and talk about Blizzard's profits e.t.c.. Just a lot of masturbation about how popular Korean people are (like they do about K-pop).

Am I right in thinking that Hallyu star is something along the lines of a korean who has celebrity-esque status outside of Korea?

I'm sure I've heard Hallyu-wave in some K-Drama before.

I see Korean news media hasn't changed much regarding how supposedly or seemingly popular Koreans are in foreign countries. Same case with the Korean Wave, K-Pop, and Korean cuisine.

But yeah, it's more talking about how Koreans are treated like "Hollywood stars" and how Korea is all dominant. Not much about Blizzcon, Starcraft 2, and the tournament itself.

Yeah. It's the spread of Korean culture around Asian countries, and more recently Western countries as well.

I meant because we have SBS in Australia. SBS is an international channel that has news from a lot of different countries. It is very possible that he saw Korean news on SBS in NZ, if they have it, which it turns out they don't.

sbs in aus takes its korean news from ytn. also they have literally zero in common except for being television channels and having the same initials.

To add to the confusion, if you are in New Zealand and have access to Freeview HD (local brand name for DVB-T), you may be able to pick up channels 41-43 which screen selected SBS shows/news and YTN (I think the YTN channel is full-time YTN). Just sayin'... d-:

Edit: And of course, SBS in Australia = Special Broadcasting Service, SBS in Korea = Seoul Broadcasting System. Again, just sayin'... They're two completely unrelated broadcasters which happen to share the initialism.
