I haven't really cared much about the ability to remap keys since it's all burned into my brain with 11 years of broodwar, but one thing I'd happily remap for convenience is CTRL.

My first thought is both the ` and w keys are unused by zerg and very easily accessible for 1-5 and f1-f4 but unfortunately these keys aren't recognized the same way as alt, ctrl, and shift (can be combined with other keypresses for different affects such as capitalization or pasting from clipboard.)

Has anyone found a way to remap this (other than a programmable keyboard) that could be done even in LAN tournaments?

I think there is a program that can remap your keys on any keyboard. But it wouldn't be an in-game thing. You would have to disable and enable it every time you enter/leave the game

You can go to "Menu", then "Hotkeys" and then personalize CTRL to whatever key you want it to be. SC II is different than BW where you can actually customize Hotkeys.

EDIT: If I'm not getting what you're saying in my statement above, please explain further.

Doesn't BNET save your key profiles? Or is control not able to be editted I thought it was.

I rebound it to shift. It's a lot closer and you can use the combos of it and still do things like Shift attack and Shift move.

You can't rebind control itself. You can only rebind combinations of control.

For instance I could make control+5 "attack" but I couldn't make "control" moved to the ` key.

Isn't that the point? That you don't have a function to "Ctrl" but lots of commands bound to different combinations? I think there are commands for "Defining hotkey 1-0". I know that for cameras it is like that, at least

But you can't make "w+1" for example because W functions differently than control at a fundamental level on the keyboard.

As far as I know, you can't fully remap the functionality of CTRL in your SC2 hotkey setup. Although you can individually remap most of the important stuff (like control group assignment), built in functions like CTRL-clicking units or selecting stuff in the group window cannot be changed within SC2; you'd have to alter that in Windows or use a keyboard with onboard profiles.

Unix and OS X have preferences that allow you to remap control to certain keys (Caps Lock is a popular choice). On Windows, I use SharpKeys to do the job. It claims to be an XP program, but I've been using it on 7 without any problems.

EDIT: And by Unix, I mean Ubuntu. But hey, who uses anything else?

There's something other than Ubuntu?!! Blasphemy

The trouble with something like sharpkeys is I can't install it onto MLG computers

I have a feeling I'm gonna be stuck with using a keyboard that has programmable firmware since that will go anywhere.

i rebound control to my mouse4 using xbuttonmouse control (probably going to change this to 1 and mouse5 to 2) but i'd imagine you'd have the same problems with mlg and sharpkeys :|

Any chance you can run something as a portable app off a flash drive? I dunno how strict the regulations are.

autohotkey

in the script you'll want to put somthing like LAlt::Ctrl

Then you can control click units with alt. Ask me how I know It's not directly within the eula but you probably won't get banned for it. The specific ruling for the eula was no more than one action per key so it's technically fine :D

In windows (any version it is as easy as a registry change to remap a key, I have since forever had Caps-lock as a 2nd backspace key, and for zerg this is great when using the backspace-inject method. There are programs that do this in a graphical way, but they are at an OS level so if someone would not need the graves key then it might be worth it.

And plenty of people use plenty of *nix other than Ubuntu.
Shall we play a game?

I know a number of people do this type of thing to make using some editors like vi and emacs more streamlined. Most often I see it switching caps lock and ctrl.

If you are on a windows system then you can do this, but note that this changes your layout for your entire system not just in Star Craft. I'm not sure if you can map 'W' to ctrl in particular, but I don't see why you couldn't.

Warning: if you aren't comfortable messing with your registry then you should not do this.

I have the same problem.

I've remapped my hotkeys so creating a control group is used with the 'alt' button but I'm used to using 'ctl' as a double click (when you press control and click a unit, you'll immediately select every one of that same unit nearby). If I could just remap everything 'ctl' does to 'alt' my life would be so much easier.

I use Keytweak to remap the whole numpad (I'm left handed and I find it comfortable to play with) and some other keys.
The software itself it's great because you can save the profiles so it's easy to switch from one to another (basically default and gaming profile).
However, since it requires the system to reboot after any change I'm wondering if is it allowed on lan tourneys. Can someone with a bit of lan experience tell me if they generally let you remap keys or you should have pre-built layouts (maybe saved on the keyboard)?

Can't rebind ctrl, I fucking tried ):
If you have a Razer mouse, you can bind one of your extra buttons to be ctrl.

Sorry to bump this thread, but I couldn't quite figure this out from this discussion.

Is it possible to have a setup that would allow you to bind mouse button 4+ to things like ctrl and be LAN tournament (MLG etc) legal? And how/what would I need? I assume using programs like autohotkey or anything else that is not stored on mouse/kb/bnet wouldn't be allowed.

Thanks.

I too am sorry for bumping this thread, but I'm wondering about the same thing as the poster above me. Would something like rebinding caps lock to ctrl (something that some people do permanently because seriously, who uses the caps lock key) be legal in an MLG or similar? What about a keyboard that had its circuitry changed so that the ctrl key and caps lock key were switched?

Come to think of it, what would the legal status of a keyboard shaped like a console controller be? Or shaped like anything, really.
